MEXICAN PLAZA PLAZAS, LIKE OTHER SIGNIFICANT PUBLIC SPACES, ARE CENTERS OF URBAN CIVILITY THAT PROVIDE A FORUM FOR THE SOCIAL AND POLITICAL EXCHANGE NECESSARY TO DEMOCRATIC LIFE. THE TRADITIONAL MEXICAN PLAZA WAS FRONTED BY THE RELGIOUS CHURCH, NATIONAL GOVERNMENT PALACE, LOCAL GOVERNMENT OFFICES, AND PUBLIC MARKETS. THE MURAL THE CONCEPT OF THE MURAL AS POLITICAL MESSAGE WAS TRANSPLANTED TO THE U.S., ESPECIALLY IN THE SOUTHWEST. IT SERVED AS INSPIRATION TO THE LATER CHICANO MURAL MOVEMENT, BUT THE POLITCAL MESSAGES ARE DIFFERENT.
03
MEXICAN MURALISM (1920S-1970S) GENERALLY SOCIAL AND POLITCAL MESSAGES CREATED ON PUBLIC BUILDINGS. TRADITION THAT CONTINUES TO THIS DAY IN MEXICO AND HAS HAD AN IMPACT IN OTHER PARTS OF THE AMERICAS, INCLUDING THE US WHERE IS SERVED AS INSPIRATION FOR THE CHIICANO ART MOVEMENT. SOME FAMOUS MURALISTS INNCLUDE DIEGO RIVERA, JOSE CLEMENTE OROZCO, AND DAVID ALFARO SIQUIEROS. THE MURALISTS ALL DIFFERED INSTYLE AND TEMPERAMENT, BUT ALL BELIEVED THAT ART WAS FOR THE EDUCATION AND BETTERMENT OF THE PEOPLE. ONE OF THE BASIC UNDERLYINGS OF THE POST-REVOLUTIONARY MEXICAN ART WAS THAT IT SHOLD BE PUBLIC, AVAILABLE TO THE CITIZENRY, AND ABOVE ALL NOT THE PROVINCE OF A FEW WEALTHY COLLECTORS.
STREET ART TODAY THE CONCEPT OF THE MURAL TODAY REMAINS THE SAME, BUT IT IS GETTING A MODERN MAKEOVER. FORMER GRAFFITI TAGGERS & GRAPHIC DESIGNERS HAVE JOINED TOGETHER IN A COOPERATIVE CALLED “STREET ART CHILANGO” IN WHICH THEY PAINT WALLS AND HYPE UP THEIR WORK ON SOCIAL MEDIA WHERE, DESPITE THE TEMPORAL NATURE OF STREET ART, LIVES FOREVER.
MEXICAN CONSULATE OF HOUSTON 2015
OCTAVIO PAZ: PAZ IS RECOGNIZED THROUGHOUT LATIN AMERICA AND THE WORLD FOR HIS LITERARY WORK IN CULTURAL STUDIES. FOR EXAMPLE, THE THEME OF EL LABERNITO DE LA SLEDAD IS THE IDENTIFICATION OF THE MEXICAN PEOPLE DERIVED FROM BOTH MEXICAN HISTORY AND THE COMPARISION OF MEXICO WITH ITS NEIGHBORS, ESPECIALLY THE UNITED STATES. THIS THEME HAS FOUNDATIONS IN SOCIOLOGY, SUCH AS THE WAY PRESENT DAY MEXICO IS A PRODUCT OF ITS PAST, BUT ALSO IN PHILOSOPHY, IN THE EXISTENTIAL SENSE THAT MEXICANS ARE SEARCHING FOR WHO THEY ARE. THE DIALECTIC OF SOLITUDE: AT THE EXIT FROM THE LABYRINTH OF SOLITUDE WE WILL FIND REUNION (WHICH IS REPOSE AND HAPPINESS), AND PLENITUDE, AND HARMONY WITH THE WORLD. COMMUNION AND SOLITUDE ARE OPPOSITE AND COMPLEMENTARY. THE PACHUCOS AND OTHER EXTREMES MIMETISMO IS ANOTHER EFFECT OF SOLITUDE, RESULTING AS THE EXTREME FORM OF “DISIMULARSE” OR HIDING ONESELF. MEXICANS ATTEMPTING TO MIMIC ASPECTS OF OTHER CULTURES, SUCH AS PACHUCOS, EXEMLIFY THE CULTURAL CONCEPT OF MIMETISMO. THIS ATTEMPT AT BREAKING AWAYF ROM SOLITUDE, SUCH AS THE PACHUCO, OR OPENING UP TO EXTERNAL SOCIETY WITH MIMETISMO, ONLY SEVERS CONNECTIONS TO THE CULTURAL PAST AND DISTANCES ONE FROM FINDING THEIR IDENTITY.
THE RIBBON
MEXICAN MASKS THE MEXICAN, WHETHER YOUNG OR OLD, CRIOLLO OR MESTIZO, SEEMS TO BE A PERSON WHO SHUTS HIMSELF AWAY TO PROTECT HIMSELF: HIS FACE A MASK AND SO IS HIS SMILE. IN A COUNTRY THAT IS HAUNTED BY THE UNREALISED IDEALS OF ITS MODERNIST PAST, WHERE REVOLUTIONARY MESSAGES TEND TO BE CO-OPTED BY POLITICAL PARTIES, THE NEW CULTURAL PRODUCERS MUST BE ABLE TO DISGUISE THEMSELVES AND COPE WITH THIS CONDITION TO A POINT THAT SEEMS ALMOST CONSERVATIVE. LA RAZA CÓSMICA: A COSMIC RACE: THIS REPRESENTS THE WAY IN WHICH MEXICANS HAVE INHERITED TWO DISTINCT CULTURES, FROM TEH INDEGENOUS AND THE SPANISH, TO PRESENT DAY MEXICAN-AMERICANS, BUT BY DENYING ONE PART OF THEIR IDENTITY, THEY BECOME STUCK IN A WORLD OF SOLITUDE. DEATH, FIESTAS, AND IDENTITY DEATH IS CELEBRATED BUT AT THE SAME TIME REPELLED BECAUSE OF THE UNCERTAINTY BEHIND IT. DEATH AND BIRTH ARE SOLITARY EXPERIENCES. FIESTAS EXPRESS A SENSE OF COMMUNALITY, CRUCIALLY EMPHASIZING THE IDEA OFNOT BEING ALONE, AND IN SO DOING HELP BRING OUT THE TRUE MEXICAN THAT IS USUALLY HIDDEN BEHIND A MASK OF SELF-DENIAL.

ADULT SPECIALTY HOSPITAL
AKWA IBOM, NIGERIA
DESIGN
CONCEPT
THE INSPIRATION FOR THE DESIGN OF OUR HOSPITAL WAS THE NIGER RIVER, BEING THE LOCATION OF THE REGIONAL CONEXT IN THE NIGER RIBER DELTA. THIS RIVER IS THE THIRD LONGEST IN AFRICA AND FLOWS THROUGH THE COUNTRY OF NIGERIA MAKING AN ELEGANT “S” SHAPED CURVE. THE GREAT RIVER HAS SUPPORTED LIFE AND TRADE IN THE REGION. OUR INSPIRATION FOR THE INPATIENT UNIT TOWER MIMICKS THE FLOW OF THE RIVER SINCE AKWA IBOM IS PART OF THE NIGER RIVER DELTA.
15
IT NOT ONLY REPRESENTS THE DELTA REGION, BUT WHAT AKWA IBOM IS KNOW FOR AND IT’S INHABITANTS: A SYMBOL OF HOPE AND HEALING WATERS.
TEXAS A&M | PROF. GEORGE MANN COLLAB. W/GABRIELA MACIAS SPRING 2014
EMERGENCY STAIRWELLS: Stairwells at the end of all corridors and next to the central core of elevators.
NURSE STATIONS: Nurse work stations spread out along central spine of the inpatient tower. CENTRAL STAFF CORRIDOR: This central spine of the inpatient tower provides limited access only for staff.
CENTRAL ELEVATORS: The location of the main elevator core runs throughout all floors of the hospital and into the lobby.

ADULT SPECIALTY HOSPITAL
AKWA IBOM, NIGERIA
SECTION + STRUCTURE
The structural material that we determined is best suited to produce our hospital is concrete. The affordability and wide-spread utilization of concrete in Nigeria is the main factor in our decision. The concrete structure is shown on the left looking at the hospital from the northeast. The louver system is also shown that will protect our inpatient tower’s east and west facades.
The structural framing plan is based on a nine meter grid with the inpatient tower “s” shaped curve grid determined by the inpatient room layout. The three dimensional model of the architectural, structural, and mechanical elements will help implement construction and maintence of the building throughout it’s existence.

NATATORIUM - URBAN INFILL
EAST SIXTH ST. AUSTIN, TX TEXAS A&M | PROF. ODOM COLLAB. W/ DANIEL SANDOVAL FALL 2013
URBAN CONTEXT THE DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE NATATORIUM RESHAPES THE TRADITIONAL SWIMMING EXPERIENCE BY UTILIZING PUBLIC SPACES WHICH FACILITATE THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE LOCAL EAST SIDE COMMUNITY AND GREATER URBAN AREAS. THE NATATORIUM IS LOCATED ON EAST SIXTH STREET IN THE CENTER OF THE CITY EAST OF INTERSTATE 35 AND DOWNTOWN AUSTIN. THE LOCATION IS IDEAL FOR PEDESTRIANS AND VEHICULAR TRAFFIC AS WELL DUE TO THE URBAN PROXIMITY.

STEEL CONNECTIO NS ADVANTAGES OF BOLTS
-only works if the materials are the same. -Cheaper and requires no skilled laboer -takes less time to assemble
DISADVANTAGES OF BOLTS
-Bolting two components is not permanent. -The parts can be readily diassembled if one of them is damaged or the parts have reached their service. -Have a lot of stress and once one needs repair all need repairs ADVANTAGES OF WELDING -Once welded = always welded -Depending on the welding method used welding can create a continous joint with little stress. DISADVANTAGES OF WELDING -Only works if the materials are the same. -Expensive STEEL STRUCTURE ADVANTAGES: -High Strength/weight ratio: there is little dead weight of a steel strucutre. -Ductility: Steel can undergo large deformation before failure, which prevents sudden failure and will show visible warning signs such as deflection before a failure. -Predictable Material Properties - In contrast to reinforced concrete, the properties of steel have no considereable change over time. -Construction: The speed of steel structure is must faster and results in a quicker payoff economically. -Adaptability: Steel can be prefabricated and mass produced -Ease of Repair: Steel Structures can be repaired quickly and easily
