Piazza Di Cestello

How do we add a modern additions to to the historical city of Florence? Rather than building in the piazzas, obstructing views of the residents and the tourists, the hotels are situated on the roofs of the existing buildings. The piazzas are left with minimal interventions to preserve open public space along the Arno. A traditional hotel is catered to tourists that come for a week and then leave, but the design looks to create a more lasting connection. Situated as an extension of a home or business, the design bridges the gap between Airbnb and a Hotel. The units infill the voids in the urban fabric, creating a new layer of architecture above the city. 6

Pushing Pulling Pushingand and Pulling Pushing and Pulling

Four generations living in the house are encouraged to utilize the house’s core or memory room for a more communal way of living. The massing is pushed and pulled to accomodate second floor program connecting the exterior form and the memory room. Two skylights pierce the roof increasing the vibrancy of the core. The first floor is carved away to create logia, connections between exterior and interior program, and a contrast of materiality. 16

The central, double-height space in the house acts as a meeting space for the family, framing special moments. Nooks and and openings are used to create a playfulness and highlight the flexibility of the dwelling. A “memory wall is directly connected to the central space. It stores and displays objects of memory, symbolizing the harmony between the four generations.

HYBRID CITY MASTER PLANNING Professor: Location: With:

Alessandro Orsini South Bronx, NY Donovan Kirkland, Frank Deblasio, Viviana Gonzalez, and Lucas Koch

Nicholas LiCausi

Hybrid City integrates landscape and vertical structure where landscape is any horizontal fabric, natural or man made. Through the process of integration the city combines multiple systems to create a new whole that performs as a unit. The buildings are conceptualized as a vertical city block, allowing the spaces between the structures to remain green public space. It allows for a coexistence with the existing industrial program that had previously taken over the coastline, and now exist underground, with access through the corridors. The corridors become the streets within the block, creating access to the transportation networks and layers that have been delaminated within the site.

ALEXANDER AVE LIVE / WORK HOUSING Professor: Location:

Nicholas LiCausi

Living and working in the same space fosters a sense of community. Small businesses owned by people who live in the building produce an engagement not found where commercial and residential are divided. Decreasing the separation between live/work forms a shared ownership where the user is more inclined to maintain their space. The building combats the negative aspects of gentrification with designed shared regions. They can walk or bike from their unit directly to where they work increasing chance encounters with other residents and reducing their ecological footprint.

licausi.nicholas@gmail.com

39

Shifting the connection from isolated living and working space will create eyes on the street to minimize antisocial behavior. This generates a safer space for the residences and the community. By shifting the scale of a vertical block to a horizontal skyscraper there are more eyes on the street. The height is limited to increase the connection to the ground plane and the existing urban fabric. Units delaminate from each other to provide individual and communal semi-private zones. The level of privacy of the terraces is based off of views and connections between units. 40

Anemoi is a self-sustaining coastal field station that utilizes wind power with twelve wind turbines attached to rotating cantilever workspaces. Scientists' offices revolve around four central vertical circulation shafts that stradle the pier. Workspaces rotate according to the direction of the wind, or desired location for workspace functionality. 46

The Parklet provides a communal space for NJIT students featuring two folding benches, creating an interactive experience and multiple functions. During studio, the benches fold up and become a pin up wall. After studio, the benches fold down and form a social space. The parklet became an auxilary space for studio, a place to eat your food from the food trucks, and a manifestation of the efforts of the volunteers of AIAS Freedom by Design. 62
