“The experiences they have here are as important as the classwork. There’s a side to this school that simply isn’t put across in the marketing... it’s difficult to pin down. It’s what makes this little oasis in the middle of Glendale’s suburban sprawl so unique, and so great. It defines the boundaries of the Mystique, and doesn’t reveal itself fully until you’ve spent time here. “ Jake Strickler Class of 2017

Incubate Year: 2017 Location: Las Vegas, Nevada Type: Commercial, office building, mixed use Las Vegas as a city looks to grow and diversify its economy. Detailed in the vision 2045 master plan are initiatives already taking place in this aspect with the revamping of the medical district. In my research, I found Las Vegas already has a thriving community of entrepreneurs. I decided to consider the work environments of incubator spaces as they work side by side with entrepreneurs helping their businesses grow. Additionally, I discovered that work environments are fluctuating. Instead of over programming, we as designers should provide the flexibility required for buildings to work no matter what the commerce of the future turns out to be.
Eastern Market Year: 2016 Location: Detroit, Michigan Type: Public building, commercial Eastern Market Corporation has built an infrastructure around the market to support their mission to enrich Detroit nutritionally, culturally, and economically. Shed 1 through 6 have provided Eastern Market with traditional temporary vending for many years. The goal of Shed 7 is to create a new image for Eastern Market through the incorporation of long term vendors, studio style apartments for young professionals, and a location for the Eastern Market Corporation employees along with other small thriving businesses to work from. Ceramics Research Center Year: 2017 Location: Tempe, Arizona Type: Higher education, museum, public building The research center houses the most comprehensive collection of American postwar ceramic art in the world. Egress was the pressing issue on the 23x100’ urban infill site. Most of the collection is housed in open storage rather than exhibition space and therefore the project uses fireproof glass to wrap the fire stairs core to provide a focal point of open storage as the vsitor progresses through the museum. The program also includes a research facility, closed storage, a cafe, a gift shop, an artist-in-residence studio and several flexible gallery spaces.
Phoenix Biomedical Campus Year: 2017 Location: Phoenix, Arizona Type: Higher education, medical Commissioned by the University of Arizona (UA) and the City of Phoenix, the planning process for this 2016 Phoenix Biomedical Campus (PBC) Master Plan Update is a highly focused effort within a limited time frame. A series of workshops were held as the primary method for gathering data, reviewing topics, and addressing potential solutions. THEMES Optimize the infrastructure and land resources Balance program, land area and density profiles Reinforce connections between campus and community Strategic alignment of future program growth + land capacity Project completed with architecture firm Ayers Saint Gross.

3.1 Thunderbird Design Strategies
Thunderbird History and Culture The Thunderbird School of Global Management was founded in 1946 as the American Institute for Foreign Trade. Before the Internet and globalization, Thunderbird understood we would be globally connected. The curriculum was set up to immerse students in cultures around the world, and to bring students from around the world together to learn in a collaborative environment.
“Our students are able to operate immediately in foreign environments.” - Roy Herberget Jr., President of Thunderbird 1989-2004
Thunderbird was ahead of the curve with global integration. Ranked consistently among the top schools for international business in the world, the 1990’s found its peak enrollment at around 1,600
43,000 alumni 150 countries

An Urban Thunderbird The schools aims to implement new teaching approaches to address a changing global environment, including the development of new, specialized institutes. We stress enhanced collaboration while maintaining an appreciation for other cultures. The location allows ease of opportunities within the Phoenix urban center for internships with governmental and nonprofit organizations. Above all, we strive to reinforce the unique Thunderbird culture that differentiates the school from other global management programs.
Thunderbird Degrees In 2014, Thunderbird became an independent unit of the Arizona State University Knowledge Enterprise. The MBA program transformed into a Master of Global Management (MGM) in response to marketplace demands that had shifted away from broadstroke MBAs toward specialized master’s degrees. Currently, Thunderbird offers the following degrees: -
Online MGM Executive MGM Master of Arts in Global Affairs & Management Bachelor of Global Management Bachelor of Science in International Trade
Of these degrees, the Execucutive MGM and the Master of Arts in Global Affairs and Management will be housed in the downtown facility.
Institutes and Programs within Thunderbird Geneva, Moscow and Dubai outposts Consulting laboratories Alumni mentor program Das Tor magazine Peace Corps Coverdell Fellowships Custom executive courses for companies (i.e. oil and gas) Workshops Online certificates in specific sectors of international business
Growing Thunderbird As Thunderbird increases enrollment, new specialized institutes will form within the school. Collaboration with nearby schools such as the Sandra Day O’Connor School of Law, the Walter Cronkite School of Business and Mass Communication and the publicy policy programs at Arizona State will provide fruitful cross-pollination of ideas. Flexible spaces are necessary to accomodate future growth.
Thunderbird Events: Visitors Welcome Thunderbird events are a crucial aspect of the school’s culture. With a centrally-located flagship facility, the school can extend the reach of events to students as well as the general public. Public spaces are essential to the integration of the Thunderbird facility with other ASU buildings as well as the Phoenix urban fabric.
Professional Connections within the Valley At the new downtown Phoenix location, Thunderbird students will have easy access to a variety of internship and networking opportunities with governmental agencies, nonprofit organizations and private business.

A Place to Remember Digging through a compilation of Das Tor, the student publication, we learned quitea bit about the culture and atmosphere of Thunderbird throughout the decades.
“I sometimes ask myself why I ever left that fantastic place.” Bob Parker, Sept. 1980
“Thunderbird is the place to go for an international career... this is international living; this is what Thunderbird is all about. It is the international atmosphere that attracts us and keeps us.” A new student, 1977
1980 Thunderbird alumnus and Goodyear executive Clifford Bevens was kidnapped in Guatemala.
Columbia and the University of South Carolina unveil graduate programs in international business.
After a food fight in the cafeteria caused $875 in damange, a letter sent to students stated: “Such behaviour is clearly inconsistent with the maturity expected of future international executives.
1982 International students now make up roughly 30% of the student body. One third are now female. The Beer Club is launched. Attractions of the school include: MBA training without the MBA attitude diversity practical applications job placement reputation

4.1 Parti + Concept
Think Globally, Act Locally The building captures the aspects of the suburban campus that were so enticing to students for 70 years and translates them to the downtown facility. The central spherical atrium rises four floors, creating visual connectivity across all programs. Passageways aligned to the surrounding urban fabric slice through the mass surrounding the atrium creating dramatic, canyon-esque entryways. On the fifth floor, a lush rooftop garden serves as a communal gathering space and a patio for the Thunderbird Pub that occupies the other half of the floor.

5.1 Project Efficiency Strategies Our firm has close relations with the ASU campus. Our proximity to the downtown Phoenix Thunderbird site will allow us to discuss the scope of the project with Thunderbird representatives when needed. It is important for us to be engaged with consultants who are passionate about integrative design, can offer sustainable design strategies, and who share the similar vision of re-energizing the Thunderbird Campus with a sustainable, breathtakingly beautiful downtown campus building. Sub-Consultant Basis for Selection We will select consultants who support this focus using the following criteria: o Knowledge of Arizona State University and downtown Phoenix o Experience in higher education facilities o Proximity to the site o Depth of resources to accomplish projects on time o BIM experience o Prior work experience with Arizona State University o Affiliation with the Thunderbird School of Global Management Integration of Sub-Consultants Partnering sessions o It is important for us to be in close relations with our consultants. Prior to beginning the design, we will conduct partnering sessions to understand the personalities of team members. Effective project meetings o We will schedule meetings on a recurring basis amongst the partners at CENK, and with our consultants. These meeting will ensure that we are on schedule, and that we are in sync with our consultants. Open evaluation + communication o Each team member will be evaluated weekly to ensure that tasks are being accomplished on time, and to CENK standards. Building Information Modelling (BIM) o Aid in the coordination of the project o Fewer request for information (RFI) will be needed during the construction process o BIM software will allow us to understand how systems will be integrated during the design phase
