Honor a special someone

There are many ways to make your gift to the nicholsfuture.org Capital Campaign. General support is welcome, however, you may wish to designate your donation to honor a special faculty member or friend who has had a positive impact on your life or the life of your child. Consider these possibilities: Albert R. Sutter One of the most respected Nichols faculty members in our history was Albert R. Sutter, who died in 2009. As a foreign language teacher, mentor and friend, “El Supremo” is remembered and revered by generations of Nichols students. The Sutter Chair recognizes a member of the current faculty who exemplifies his excellence in teaching and strong personal values. George B. Truscott ’55 One of the two new athletic fields has been named in memory of George B. Truscott ‘55, beloved Nichols faculty member and coach who died in 2008. Few of us will ever forget the sight of George and one of his loyal Golden Retrievers out on the playing field where he loved to be. The lead gift was made by his son, Ted Truscott ’79, and also honors Ted’s classmate and friend, Bob Strauss ’79. G. Frederick Zeller, Jr. ’47 Fritz Zeller, who died in 2009, will be remembered by over four decades of Nichols students as perhaps the ultimate role model. As an administrator, teacher and coach, Fritz stressed character and sportsmanship above all else. To honor his memory, the Zeller Fund for Ethics and Character has been established. This initiative will include a scholarship, an enriched advisory program, new curricular initiatives, an Ethics and Leadership Student Orientation and enhanced faculty and staff training.

Grace McKendry Grace McKendry taught art at Nottingham Academy and Nichols for 25 years. She introduced visual arts to countless students and was truly a leader in the growth of the arts at Nichols. Many alumni were inspired by her creativity, enthusiasm, style and flair. To honor her memory, an endowed scholarship fund has been established through this campaign. Need-based scholarships are awarded to students who show talent in the visual arts. You can designate your campaign gift to be added to the Grace McKendry Memorial Scholarship Fund to help provide opportunities for future artists. Richard C. Bryan Few individuals have had an impact on Nichols as impressive as that of Rick Bryan. His legacy will include the opening of the Flickinger Performing Arts Center, the relocation of the Middle School to the Amherst campus, the integration of technology into the Nichols curriculum and all the benefits of this campaign. To recognize his leadership and commitment to the environment, the green roof of the new Math and Science Building has been named in his honor. Honor a Faculty Member or Friend Perhaps you have a personal choice of a faculty or staff member who made a lasting and important impression on your life. Or, there may be a special classmate or friend whose loyalty and friendship influenced your years at Nichols. Make a gift to honor someone of your choosing.

The nicholsfuture.org Capital Campaign is already a tremendous success. During one of the most challenging economic environments in history, the Nichols community has come together like never before. To date, over $22 million of the $23.3 goal has been raised. The finish line is in sight, but we need your help to get us there.

For a list of all naming opportunities, please call Elizabeth Stevens Gurney ‘75 at 716.332.5152.

nicholsfuture.org The Class of 1963 Center for Math and Science This magnificent 24,000 sq. ft. learning center has already had a tremendous impact on our campus. Both our faculty and students are thrilled with the bright and spacious classrooms, laboratories and study spaces. The entire community has taken note of the building’s green attributes, including natural daylighting and sun control, a landscaped green roof, a sustainable heating and cooling system and an active, naturally purified, air quality system.

Endowment

Can we count on you?

Never again will Mother Nature prevent a practice or a game for our football, soccer, field hockey or lacrosse teams. The two new eco-friendly, artificial turf fields have extended the seasons for our teams and provide near-perfect conditions for both interscholastic play and physical education classes.

Those who have not visited the Nichols campus recently will be surprised by a dramatically different layout. The former football field along Colvin Avenue is now a beautifully landscaped parking lot. The former parking lot is the site of the new Class of 1963 Center for Math and Science. An outer-ring driveway provides safer, more efficient traffic flow for both cars and buses.

Nichols has been very successful over the past 20 years in increasing the School’s endowment. But there is still work to be done to bring Nichols closer to peer school endowment levels. Endowment is critical for funding increased need-based financial aid, curricular innovation and on going physical plant maintenance and support.

After you have seen the enclosed DVD and considered your giving options, we hope you will make your commitment by filling out the enclosed pledge card. The nicholsfuture.org campaign will be ending soon, so please take this opportunity to join this important effort. If you have questions about the campaign or would like to discuss your gift, please contact Assistant Head of School Elizabeth Stevens Gurney ’75 at 716.332.5152 or at egurney@nicholsschool.org.
