santa caterina market
Emily Britton, Nick Forthman Dylan Hames, Ibad Rehman
The Santa Caterina Market (Isabel II Market) is a historic neighbourhood market located in the Gothic Quarter, Barcelona Spain. The original market was built from 1844-1848 and was remodelled starting 1997-2005. The market houses over one hundred food and vendor stalls. Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue (EMBT) designed the new renovation. This building study conducted by a group of architecture students aim toward exploring EMBT’s construction methods, Concept, and Spacial Design.
The colorful roof structure reinvigorates and beautiďŹ es the market culture. The ceramic tiles reect the vibrant culture and the color of the stalls within. Each of the four facades are remnants of the existing structure built in 1848. 60 vendors occupy stalls within the structure including; shops, cafes, supermarkets, and a restaurant
The materials were perfectly pieced together, LVL glue laminated arches from seville, and the tubular steel trusses fabricated in Barcelona. This system allowed for large spans and tall open spaces. This kept the market feeling comfortable while occupying large amounts of people and vendors.

THE SHAPE OF AND ORIENTATION OF THE TOWER IN RESPONSE TO PREVAILING WIND
PATTERNS ALSO SHAPED AND ORIENTED THE BUILDING.
From the beginning sustainability was a major factor in the design. The proposed tower was to act as an icon to visually reveal its methods of energy conservation and production. A mechanical ‘wing’ developed into becoming that visible display of sustainability. The shape of the tower began to take shape, within the concept of Transportation, of an air plane wing. This allowed for structure to be minimized as well wind to be funnelled around the building.

Strategically placed wind turbines then would take advantage of the increased wind speeds and pressures. Project Falcon (images left) helped us form the ideal shape and structure of the tower and mechanical wing to optimise the air flow. This air flow would not only power the wind turbines but also create a ‘Natural’ forced ventilation throughout the building. The mechanical wing serves several other functions as well as energy production. Inclosed green spaces are located on the upper levels of the mechanical wing cutouts. This collects heat during the winter and acts as a heat recovery box, and collects rainwater off of the tower to supplement the tower’s gray water systems.

THE MERCANTILE BUILDING LOCATED ON 3RD AND MISSION IN DOWN TOWN SAN FRANCISCO IS A HISTORIC AMERICAN MID-RISE BUILDING. THE STRUCTURE OF THE BUILDING HAS BEEN DEEMED UNSAFE. A DEVELOPER IS INTERESTED IN RENOVATING THE AREA. THIS DEVELOPER WISHES TO CREATE A MIXED USE MID-RISE THAT KEEPS THE MERCANTILE FACADE INTACT. NEW ZONING INCLUDES RETAIL, HOTEL AND RESIDENTIAL APARTMENT SPACES. IMMEDIATELY ADJACENT TO THE MERCANTILE SITE A MEXICAN MUSEUM HAS BEEN PROPOSED IN DESIGN, THIS COMPONENT HAS BEEN ADDED TO THE PROGRAM TO ALLOW FOR INTEGRATION OF SPACE INCLUDING JESSIE SQUARE DIRECTLY ADJACENT TO THE SITE.

OSAGE HILLS MASTER PLAN Group Members Nick Forthman John Hudacko Allie White Some visitors say that you can almost hear echoes of the Native past through the trees. Nestled in lush, topographically rich, rolling hills, this area was once an Osage Indiansettlement. When tenants finally settle down in the comfort of their quiet, private cabin, they’ll feel as if they’ve truly escaped reality and gotten away from it all. Osage Hills State Park and proposed Cultural Center is the gateway to Oklahoma’s Tallgrass Prairie. The existing park offers 1,100 acres filled with picnic tables and shelters, 20 RVcampsites and 8 cabins, swimming pools, hiking trails, ball field and tennis court. Abundant fishing for bass, crappie, catfish and perch can be found in Lookout Lake, or in Sand Creek at the south end of the park. This area is overflowing with great opportunities for foliage viewing in all seasons. The new master plan design includes a outdoor monument to the osage people, and outdoor ampiteater, a Cultural Center, Research/Arts center, and added hiking trails.
