EARTH BLOCK HOUSING Fall 2019 Advisor - Rasa Navasaityte

A glimpse into the future of what housing will eventually come to be, this project employs a futuristic Earth-Block construction. The Earth-Blocks are the future of green roofs, taking the concept to its extreme. Large structural blocks filled with earth act as a stable mass to allow the suspension of superstructures while also allowing the roots of vegetation to grow deep and become part of the structure itself. Nature can then truly become one with architecture when in many years, the vegetation will eventually consume the building.

LANDSCAPE GARDEN SANCTUARY Fall 2018 Advisor - Mike McCall

Located on the Historic Site of Angel Island in San Francisco, this project was based on traditional landscape gardens in China, the same group that was persecuted on the immigration island in the early 20th century. The project reinvents and adapts the typology and program of these gardens into an outdoor sanctuary and assembly space for a new naturalization ceremony. A construction method of using bamboo framing allows the walls to maintain an imprinted quality, embedding the culture and history of the site into the project itself.

WATER REJUVENATION Spring 2018 Advisor - Nick Steshyn

An outdoor water rejuvenation facility in the southern part in the city of Austin, Texas that lies low and flows with the landscape, creating a place-making setting for the Green Belt. The project was born out of stereotomy and focuses on the haptic and visual experiences of the user, connecting them with both water and nature. A series of views are carefully sculpted, framed by both the building and the cherry blossom trees, thereby creating a journey through the facility. A strong processional experience is evident as when the user enters and leaves a new program they are met with a change in temperature, water, and nature.

MODULAR HOUSING Spring 2019 Advisor - Simon Atkinson

The Texas School for the Deaf provides specialized education for students across Texas. However, the rising real estate prices of Austin forces these specialized teachers to move out of the city. This project aims to provide housing for not only the school, but for the city of Austin at large. A concept of modular, tiny living yields a typology that could be applied across the city and creates affordable living for the teachers and families of TSD and Austin. The modules coalesce to create community and a unique aesthetic to the neighborhood.

TOTEM OF LIGHT Fall 2017 Advisor - Juan Jofre

Constructed with contrasting materials, the totem exhibits self-sustaining design through the use of an acrylic interior structure intersecting the exterior cardboard, holding the pillar to structural stability. The overall form mimics that of a tree, reinforced through the materiality of the cardboard. The corrugation of the cardboard creates a surreal feeling as the lamp becomes transparent when viewed from certain angles. Combined with the glowing acrylic inserts, the lamp begins to reveal something new at every turn.
