EXPLORATORY ARCHITECTURE
Strictly working through analog mediums, relationships of figure/ ground, tectonomy/stereotomy, form/function, and light/shadow were discovered that led to a boundless architecture that the user would explore to happen a series of distinct and archetypal forms of architecture all connected through a distinct pathway distinguished by contrasting bright and dark spaces.

ANALOG DRAWING AND MAKING
A triad of projects that placed value on their method of making and their compositional value. A series of blind contour drawings led to the construction of a wood joint that was reminiscent of the joining of two hands. A free-hand value drawing based upon a picture that emphasized the contrast between light and shadow created a composition of texture and depth.

Photography Studies
A value drawing of Sutton Hall in Austin, Texas. The photos were focused on composition and the interplay of light and shadow in greyscale. The free-hand drawing (left) focused on the texture and the value of the light and shadows playing off the facade of Sutton Hall to recreate a detailed and sensory depiction of the surface of the building.

COMPLEXITY IN ARCHITECTURE
Non-orthogonal geometries and complexly rich three dimensional forms were the beginning studies of this project. Forms were distorted, combined, and subtracted to create a basis for the building of a local farm stand that would begin to blend with the landscape and become a movable piece of architecture that reinvigorated a connection with community and nature.

DIGITAL DISCOVERY
A series of discrete, but sequential projects that built off of one another to create a comprehensive end product. Beginning with a series of one hundred boxes that distorted from their previous iteration, they were then taken and formed together using boolean operations to create one solid-void object.

25
Digital Axon of Object within A Constructed Landscape
26
The final step in the design was finalizing a landscape for the object. The landscape was digital modeled and the object was booleaned from it. The landscape was then digitally fabricated with careful consideration for materiality using a combination of fibrous boards to mimic the sedimentary layers of a cliff and creating a sense of realism to the design.
27
PARAMETRICISM
This project began with a precedent study of the Kaohsiung Port Terminal by Reiser + Umemoto. The analysis delved into the parametricism of the design, identifying the processes they used and began to break apart their language revealing new possibilities as to how the port could be expanded. A massing study was also done, showing how the different programs of the building could be reorganized to create an entirely different complexity of structure. Intermediate I Fall 2017 Instructors: Juan Jofre

Study Model of String - Straight Lines Create Curved Surfaces and 3D Space
30
The model to the left shows a study that delved into the making of space through string that connected a series of points along a curve. When the set of points was inversed, a deformed twisting surface was created amplifying the complexity and ambiguity of the form. The ‘surfaces’ wove into and around each other to make a seemingly complex form.
The iterations above show the processes and diagrams that would go towards the final design. Taking the concept of connecting points to create a surface, in this case a form similar to a catenary curve structure, draped structures were created that could be dimensioned to fit different programs.. Tectonic elements projected from some edges to both mimic and contrast the curvilinear form.

PARAMETRIC VORONOI DOME
A project designed entirely in Grasshopper using algorithms to construct a “natural looking dome that is produced through complex interconnecting geometries. The voronoi dome can change density and thickness to accommodate different programs or desired forms.

DOUBLE CURVATURE VOLUME
Designed through boolean processes that create curvature in two directions across every facet of the object, the object begins to indicate space on both it’s interior and exterior. The object was milled using three-axis CNC routing and as such was constructed in layers to make the double curvature possible.

TOTEM OF LIGHT
Constructed with the contrasting materials, the lamp is self-sustaining by the acrylic structure inside that intersects the cardboard and holds it in place. The overall form mimics a tree trunk and is reinforced through the materiality of the cardboard. The corrugation of the cardboard creates a surreal feeling as the lamp becomes transparent when viewed from a certain angle. When combined with the glowing acrylic inserts, the lamp begins to reveal something new at every turn. Visual Communications III Fall 2017 Instructors Juan Jofre

WATER REJUVENATION
An outdoor water rejuvenation facility in South Austin that lies low and flows with the landscape and creates a place-making setting for the Green Belt. The project was born out of stereotype and focuses on the haptic and visual experiences of the user, connecting them with both water and nature.
Intermediate IV Spring 2018 Instructors: Nick Steshyn
Charcoal Studies
Beginning with charcoal sketches based on architectural words, the project then moved towards the behavior of water. To the right is a concrete model that demonstrated the behavior of water, light, and sound.

LANDSCAPE GARDEN SANCTUARY
Located on the Historic Site of Angel Island in San Francisco, this project was based on traditional landscape gardens in China, the same group that was persecuted on the immigration island in the early 20th century. The project reinvents and adapts the typology and program of these gardens into an outdoor sanctuary and assembly space for a new naturalization ceremony.
