Daniel Gervais; man can he play… My Take on Snow Lake mjaxon@gillamnet.com
Marc Jackson There is something about the sound of a fiddle that appeals to most people… but there is something about the sound of a fiddle, played well, that appeals to everyone! That was certainly the case when St. Paul, Alberta’s Daniel Gervais took to the stage at the Snow Lake Motor Inn on the evening of Sunday, April 9th. Gervais and accompanying guitar player Clinton Pelletier kicked off their first set by stating, “If anyone has any requests, by all means… keep them to yourself.” Obviously joking, Gervais went to the audience of 40 or so locals for suggestions numerous times this night, but in this instance the reply was, “The Devil went down to Georgia” and the players quickly obliged. With six albums to his credit, there was no shortage of original music to put forward; however, Gervais and Pelletier also stirred up the crowd with outstanding renderings of ‘Orange Blossom Special’, ‘Ghost Riders in the Sky’, ‘Red River Jig’, ‘Manitoba Song’, ‘Maple Sugar’, ‘If You’re Gonna Play in Texas’, ‘Tennessee Waltz’ and ‘St. Anne Song’. Prior to introducing the latter, Gervais appeared impressed that Stompin’ Tom had in fact played on the very stage he was set up on this night. Daniel Gervais has been playing the violin since
the age of five. He plays a variety of fiddle styles and classical violin. He holds a Master of Music degree in classical violin at the University of Alberta and in addition to performing at the 2012 London Olympics as a cultural ambassador of Alberta, he performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City. He is also the first and only Albertan to win the Canadian Grand Master Fiddle Competition, competing in the Canadian Grand Masters in 2003 and returned to the competition in 2004 and 2008, finishing in the top eleven both times. He currently teaches as a member of the sessional faculty at Edmonton’s MacEwan University in the jazz and popular music program. Clinton Pelletier is originally from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, but now resides in Edmonton. He plays ‘Finger style guitar’ and those fingers are nothing short of magic. With Gervais playing fiddle beside him, most were hard pressed to determine which of the gents was playing what… they are both that quick. The two first met in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan at a fiddle camp and have collaborated regularly since. Of note, Pelletier’s father Freddie has worked with Gene Watson, Ferlin Husky, Red Sovine, and toured with Ian Tyson. Throughout their two, one hour sets, both men amused the audience with

Gervais called Gypsy Jazz. They also pulled out and dusted off a Canadian inspired version of Waltzing Matilda, called ‘Hunting My Nita’, and Gervais’ own ‘In Tall Buildings’ was worth
the price of admission on its own. This show was the final one of the current ‘Home Routes’ series. As with the past five, the Daniel Gervais show was a winner.

Workers’ dedication Evacuated OCN MLA Report kelly.bindle.mla.office@gmail.com
residents head back home today
Kelly Bindle their vehicles ran out of gas. Once the storm subsided, they could see a distant telecom tower and two of the passengers trudged through waist-deep snow for hours before breaking into the building and managing to get out a call for help. Leaf Rapids RCMP officers tried by snow machine to bring supplies to the stranded vehicles, but had to turn back. With co-ordination from Manitoba Infrastructure employees Barry Rempel, Darcy Dalyea and Calvin Abele in Thompson, Jason Cockerill and Ron MacDonald from Lynn Lake were informed of the situation and after already working for two days to push the road open from Lynn Lake to Leaf Rapids, decided to continue on and try to reach the stranded motorists. After trying with limited success with its plow, the Town of Leaf Rapids volunteered its grader and blower to help, but after a while, they also had to turn back.
At Manitoba Infrastructure’s request, Timberwolf Trucking in Lynn Lake supplied their 966 Loader with operator Brandon Dulewich to help. The snow was no match for the 966 and the Lynn Lake crew, and after clearing a path to the stranded vehicles, RCMP managed to escort the people back to Leaf Rapids. Continuing to clear toward Thompson, the crew came across another stranded vehicle with two passengers and a dog team, and managed to rescue them, too. At the end of the shift, Cockerill and MacDonald had worked approximately 36 hours straight clearing snow, answering the call for help, not giving up and doing all they could to rescue stranded motorists. This is an example of northerners coming together to help those in need, and they are Manitobans we can all be proud of. Kelly Bindle, MLA for the constituency of Thompson
All of the 125 residents of Opaskwayak Cree Nation (OCN) who had been evacuated due to ice-jamming will be back home as of April 25. The return home ends the evacuation of the Bracken Dam section of the community that took place on April 15. As part of an agreement between the Canadian Red Cross and the federal government, the Red Cross had been providing evacuation and disaster assistance to the residents, who had been staying in hotels in The Pas. That aid included lodging, food, other essential items (such as hygiene products and baby diapers) and support for the evacuees. The leadership of OCN determined that it was safe for the residents to return home, ending the evacuation. Across the province, there are still more than 200 evacuees from four different Manitoba First Nations who are out of
their homes due to flooding. Most of the evacuees are in hotels, while the remainder are staying with family and friends. Here is the list of First Nations the Red Cross is supporting, with the number of evacuees out of their homes: • Peguis First Nation – 140; • Long Plain First Nation – 43; • Sioux Valley Dakota Nation – 30; • Canupawapka Dakota First Nation – 6. Since Red Cross disaster assistance to First Nations is supported by the federal government, the expenses for these responses are covered. Anyone wishing to make a donation to help the Red Cross prepare for future disasters can go to www. redcross.ca or call 1-800-418-1111. Individuals who want to learn about how they can volunteer to help with future disasters can go to www.redcross.ca or call 204-982-7330.
Accidental shooting in Garden Hill kills 11-year-old boy An 11-year-old boy in Garden Hill First Nation has died of injuries caused by an accidental shooting April 18. Island Lake RCMP were alerted to the shooting by a call from the nursing station where the boy had been taken for emergency medical care and later died. Investigation revealed that the boy and two other male youths aged 11 and 12 were playing in a residence when they located an improperly stored gun. While the 12-year-old was handling the gun, it discharged and the victim was shot. The 12-year-old boy and his 36-year-old father were arrested. The boy is charged with criminal negligence causing death and careless use of a firearm while his father is charged with careless storage of a firearm. Both have been released from custody. Island Lake RCMP continue to investigate alongside the RCMP Serious Crime Unit, the Thompson and Winnipeg major crime units and Thompson Forensic Identification Services.

Even if we’ve never experienced a close call at work or been a victim of a serious incident, chances are we all know someone who has. Today, April 28, is the International Day of Mourning, a day to remember those injured or killed on the job and those suffering with occupational illnesses. Everyone going to work expects to come home at the end of the shift. We should all remember that every moment counts, and to work safely for ourselves, our co-workers, our friends and our families. Safety is our most important responsibility, and it requires eternal vigilance keeping it first and foremost in our thoughts. I want to recognize the extra effort and dedication shown by northern workers in Thompson, Lynn Lake and Leaf Rapids during the three-day snowstorm from March 6 to 8. The storm brought a snowfall in quantities not seen here for more than 50 years and stranded motorists travelling between Thompson and Leaf Rapids for three nights before they could be rescued. Southwest of Leaf Rapids, an SUV became stuck on the side of the highway near another vehicle and all six motorists huddled together for warmth as

Important tax-filing changes to be aware of BY SAMANTHA PRASAD, LL.B. The tax-filing deadline is almost upon us. For your 2016 tax return, the government has made a few changes to various credits and deductions, and has added some services, which it says are designed to make the painful act of filing taxes less painful. We’ll see. Here’s a summary of the tax changes you should be aware of when filing your 2016 return. New benefits and credits Canada Child Benefit. The new Canada Child Benefit (CCB) is a tax-free monthly payment made to eligible families to help with the cost of raising children under the age of 18. The CCB is meant to replace the Canada Child Tax Benefit, National Child Benefit Supplement, and the Universal Child Care Benefit. Northern Residents’ Deduction. If you have lived, on a permanent basis, in a prescribed northern or intermediate zone for a continuous period of at least six consecutive months, you may be eligible for a Northern Residents’ Deduction. For 2016 and later years, the basic and the additional residency amounts used to calculate the Northern Residents’ Deductions will be increased to $11 per day from $8.25. Teaching supplies credit.
Eligible educators may be able to claim a 15% refundable tax credit based on up to $1,000 of eligible teaching supplies bought during the tax year. New CRA services Express Notice of Assessment. You can now access the CRA My Account and the My Service Canada Account (online sign in) through a single sign-in session. change information about children in your care. Enhanced services Online mail. This service provides the option of signing up to receive certain CRA correspondence in your secure, online CRA My Account instead of by paper mail. Throughout 2016, additional types of correspondence were added to the online mail service, including benefit notices and slips, and instalment reminders. Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP). The CVITP helps Canadians with modest income and those in a simple tax situation by preparing their tax returns free of charge. In order to expand this program to more communities, the CRA recruited more organizations and volunteers to help such Canadians do their taxes and ensure they are receiving the credits and benefits they are eligible for. Auto-fill my return. Enhancements to this service include extended log-in sessions so you can stay logged into the service for a longer period than before, more tax slips, and the use of the service for previous-year returns. MyCRA mobile app. The MyCRA mobile app now allows you to update your marital status and sign up for account alerts. Other changes Income-Splitting Tax Credit The family tax cut has been eliminated for the 2016 year and future tax years. However, if you are receiving a pension, you may be able to split your eligible pension income with your spouse or common-law partner to reduce your taxes. Children’s Fitness Tax Credit. For 2016, the maximum
eligible fees in the year is reduced to $500 from $1,000, though the additional amount of $500 for children eligible for the Disability Tax Credit has not changed. Therefore, the maximum credit is reduced to $75 ($150 for a child eligible for the Disability Tax Credit). Children’s Arts Tax Credit. For 2016, the maximum eligible fees in the year is reduced to $250 from $500. The additional amount of $500 for children eligible for the Disability Tax Credit will not change. Therefore, the maximum credit is reduced to $37.50 ($112.50 for a child eligible for the disability tax credit). Home Accessibility Tax Credit (HATC) For 2016 and subsequent tax years, you can claim a non-refundable tax credit for eligible expenses incurred for work performed, or goods acquired for a qualifying renovation of an eligible dwelling of a qualifying individual. Reporting the sale of your principal residence. Starting with the 2016 tax year, you are required to report basic information (date of acquisition, proceeds of disposition, and address) on your tax return when you sell your principal residence to claim the full principal residence exemption. You do not have to pay tax on any capital gain when you sell your house as long as it was your principal residence for all the years you owned it and you did not use any part of it to earn income. Relay for Life a good time in support of a great cause DONNA WILSON Imagine working late one night, getting caught up on your filing and suffering a grand mal seizure. Imagine having an MRI and getting your results and being told, “You have a brain tumour.” For Debi Mitchell, she doesn’t have to imagine this. This is her reality. Anxiety, panic attacks, fear. It all set in. She now was faced with more trips to the doctor, more tests and more bad news. Debi was told she was terminal with a stage four brain tumor. She was given three to six months to live but if she had surgery followed by eight weeks of aggressive chemotherapy plus radiation it might prolong her life to the end of the year. She was then told that she would probably not survive the radiation. With a positive attitude and faith in her medical team and a very stubborn determination to fight, Debi survived the year! She continued the fight with 12 more chemotherapy treatments and then along came Relay For Life. Debi tells me that without the Relay For Life support she probably would have given up. We know that there are many other cancer survivors in Thompson and surrounding areas that maybe haven’t heard of Relay For Life. Some are very private about their cancer journey and don’t want others to know. We respect your decision but want all cancer survivors to know that we invite you to join us. After I was on the radio last week I had a call from a mom whose teenage daughter has cancer. She was diagnosed a couple of years ago and her fight is very hard. I could tell from our phone conversation this is very hard on not only her daughter but her mother, too. This family needs support. I made a call to the Canadian Cancer Society and they will reach out to the family. When I told this strong mother that I would try to get her some help, she said this is the first time in two years she feels hope. She is hoping for a support group. I made another call to Debi who wants to start a support group in Thompson and I will connect them at Relay For Life. I am not a counsellor or a medical professional but as the chairperson for Relay for Life in Thompson I will do whatever I can to help get you connected to the right person. Cancer has taken too many of our friends and families and we will remember them on Saturday. We will also be inspired when we see yellow t-shirts worn by survivors. Fifteen years we have been relaying in Thompson and we will never give up. I have made many friends thanks to relay including survivors, participants, sponsors and committee members. I want to thank all committee members that work with us now or have worked with us over the past 15 years.
OBITUARY WAYNE DONALD DUNCAN It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Wayne Donald Duncan of Thompson, Manitoba. Wayne was born on May 28, 1952, in Chipman, NB. He passed away peacefully at the age of 64 on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at the (A3) Assiniboine Centre in Brandon, Manitoba. Wayne is survived by his son Darrell Duncan (Jaqueline), daughter Shawna Harper (Earl); grandchildren Derian, Elliott, Kalyn, Taylor, Nathan, Sonny, Jordan, Kenton, Macy, Brody and Keegan; brothers Vernon Duncan (Louise), Dale Duncan; sister Cindy Lawson (Bruce); numerous nieces and nephews, and many good friends. The family wishes to sincerely thank all relatives and friends for their support and kindness especially the wonderful staff at the Palliative Care (A3) Àoor of the Assiniboine Centre in Brandon, MB.
Out & About
At Wayne’s request, there will be no of¿cial funeral. There will be a celebration of his life and an interment of ashes ceremony this summer in Oxford House, Manitoba. In lieu of Àowers, donations in memory of Wayne may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 415-1st Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 2W8. Messages of condolence may be placed at www.brockiedonovan.com. Arrangements are in care of Brockie Donovan Funeral & Cremation Services, Brandon, (204) 727-0694.
By Donna Wilson We’ve been asking for photos of relays past from everyone as Larry Hall is going to make us a slide show. We invite all cancer survivors in Thompson and surrounding areas to come to the arena at 4 p.m. this Saturday and register for our survivor ceremony. I have been told by a cancer survivor that they did not think they could be called a cancer survivor because they are fighting cancer right now. This hero will be at our Relay For Life this Saturday and they truly are a survivor and they will be uplifted with encouragement and hope. If you have ever had cancer or are fighting cancer right now, you are a survivor and you are why we Relay! All cancer survivors are invited to come and enjoy a light lunch in our survivor area with your family and caregivers. You do not have to raise any money to participate in the survivor ceremony. You don’t have to tell
Thompson Citizen photo courtesy of Donna Wilson Debi Mitchell has exceeded doctors’ expectations following brain tumour diagnosis. your story, you don’t have to do anything but show up and enjoy. None of us ever want a diagnosis of cancer but it can happen to any one of us. Cancer does not discriminate. It does not care about our age, colour of our skin or our religion. Cancer can happen to any one of us. As Debi says, “Cancer is just a word, NOT a sentence and with the awesome support provided by the Relay For Life, I will survive and strive to help others cope with their journey.”
Every year more and more people are being diagnosed with cancer but more and more people are surviving thanks to research and thanks to people that support our cause. There’s still time for you to support the Relay For Life in Thompson. This Saturday, everyone is invited to come out for a fun night of entertainment, head shaving, fundraising, prizes and a great feeling of community while supporting a great cause.
