Deadline for Northern Manitoba Tourism Awards nominations is April 10 Winners will be notified April 12 and the awards will be handed out at a ceremony April 24 in OCN BY IAN GRAHAM

EDITOR@THOMPSONCITIZEN.NET

The Northern Manitoba tourism industry will have the chance to sing its own praises with the Northern Manitoba Tourism Awards, which will be presented at the Kikiwak Inn in Opaskwayak Cree Nation April 24. Nominations for the awards are open until April 10 and must be submitted online at manitobatourismawards.awardsplatform. com/. There are five categories for the awards – innovation of the year, Indigenous tourism, event of the year, a partnership award and an ambassador award of distinction – and it is possible for one tourism operator or event north of the 53rd parallel to win more than one category. Travel Manitoba CEO

Colin Ferguson says similar regional awards have been handed out for years in other regions of the province but these are the first northern awards during his tenure with organization, which dates back 10 years. “It’s the first that I’m aware of and I think that it may actually be the first ever so I think we can certainly say that it’s the inaugural Northern Manitoba Tourism Awards,” Ferguson says. “We do this in other parts of the province but the north had been, for whatever reason, somewhat overlooked in past years so Travel Manitoba took it upon themselves to start the process and see what kind of reaction we can get. We’ve been spending a great deal of time in the north trying to grow tourism in the north, to explain to a number of audiences

the value of tourism in the north as an economic driver, the value of tourism in the north as an employer and the like and we’re starting to see more and more businesses taking root and those that are already in business upping their game so it’s a pretty exciting time for the north. We thought we would celebrate it with some awards.” Judging will be completed in the two days after nominations close and the winners will be contacted on April 12. “If you’re successful in winning, those nominations, I believe, are forwarded on to the Manitoba Tourism Awards,” Ferguson said. “Based on the number of nominations that have come in, we’re expecting a pretty good turnout. We’re very pleased with the enthusiasm that these northern tourism

awards have actually generated so that’s very exciting and we’re anticipating we’ll get a good crowd.” The awards ceremony is taking place the same day

that the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce is hosting an economic development tour in The Pas and OCN. “They’re going to be at the reception and many of

them, if they choose to stay on, will stay on for the dinner,” Ferguson said. The awards ceremony includes a pre-dinner reception beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Council approves $1,187 trip to municipal association meeting in Flin Flon Spirit Way briefs councillors on past and current projects

Nickel Belt News photos by Kyle Darbyson Deputy mayor Kathy Valentino voted April 1 in favour sending six city representatives, including herself, to the June 20 Association of Manitoba Municipalities Northern District meeting in Flin Flon, saying that “the north needs to support the north.” BY KYLE DARBYSON

KYLE@THOMPSONCITIZEN.NET

During their April 1 meeting, Thompson city council voted to send five of their members (plus city manager Anthony McInnis) to the upcoming Association of Manitoba Municipalities (AMM) Northern District meeting, which is taking place June 20 in Flin Flon. According to a memo from executive assistant Angela English, the cost of sending Mayor Colleen Smook, deputy mayor Kathy Valentino and councillors Les Ellsworth, Andre Proulx and Brian Lundmark to this one-day event is $1,187.90, although McInnis’s travel costs will be incurred under his departmental budget. Coun. Duncan Wong was the only member of council to vote against this resolution, saying that city should save its money for AMM events that will feature more members of the provincial government. “The June district meeting doesn’t have a lot of interaction with the ministers,” he said. “With June district you meet with possibly one minister if they make it, so I think it’s kind of a waste of money for so many councillors [to attend].”

Lundmark rebuked Wong’s argument by saying that these smaller conferences are an important part of the process, since resolutions passed at June district meetings will eventually go to the annual convention where they are voted on by the entire AMM membership. “Working with Flin Flon and Snow Lake, Gillam, Leaf Rapids, Lynn Lake, we have a lot of common issues and we can lobby better with the northern communities than AMM has really represented us in some cases,” he said. Even though he previously voted against sending Smook, McInnis and Ellsworth to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ upcoming annual conference and trade show, Coun. Jeff Fountain said this situation is different because of the low cost associated with this Flin Flon event. However, Fountain implored the attending council members to come up with some better engagement strategies to “bring back value” to the community. As the newest member of council, Proulx also talked about how he thinks this June 20 trip will be worth

the investment. “It might not show the next day, but, like anything with investment, it might show later on in the future when you do need to make a call or ask for a favour.” Spirit Way presentation Volker Beckmann and Keith MacDonald used the first 20 minutes of Monday’s meeting to introduce the current council to the work they’ve been doing through Spirit Way Inc. Beckmann explained how this organization was founded in 2004 as a means of spearheading different projects that could boost Thompson’s reputation as a major tourist destination. Throughout the ensuing 15 years, Beckmann said the organization completed a number of these initiatives, like creating the Spirit Way walking route, the Robert Bateman mural on the side of Highland Tower and the over 50 wolf statues that are scattered throughout the city. Following a busy year where Spirit Way partnered with a pair of big corporate sponsors, Beckmann said the group is looking to continue developing their wolf centre of excellence and work more closely with the city. Smook ended this pres-

A 16-year-old male suspect was soon located, arrested and charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and numerous bail violations. He was remanded into custody for a provincial court appearance scheduled for April 4 in The Pas. Flin Flon RCMP continue to investigate.

Thompson Terry Fox Run needs a new organizer for this September’sSpiritual run BY IAN GRAHAM

EDITOR@THOMPSONCITIZEN.NET

The Terry Fox Run is looking for a new organizer to ensure the event continues running in Thompson this September. Josh Cain, who has headed up the run committee over the past two years since taking over from previous organizer Tracey Williams, can no longer head up the event this year and none of the other current committee members are able to step up and take over for him. This year’s run takes place Sept. 15. For the past few years, the event has started and finished at the Thompson Regional Community Centre (TRCC) lobby, with the route itself covering the western part of Thompson Drive and Cree Road. “Anyone can do it really,” says Cain. “The only skill you really need is being willing to step outside of your comfort zone a little bit, to do a great thing for the community, and have some organizational drive.” A little help is also essential. “It’s really not a one-person job,” Cain says. “You need a committee of some sort to really have a success-

ful, and fun, run. It’s a lot of work for one person alone.” Among the tasks that the organizer oversees before the race are filling out Terry Fox Foundation paperwork to hold the run in Thompson, filling out paperwork with the city to reserve the time in the TRCC, asking local businesses and organizations for cash donations or gifts in-kind, and advertising the run in local media – “which is a big one,” Cain says. “Facebook is not good enough.” Afterwards, the organizer needs to return the money raised to the Terry Fox Foundation. There are plenty of resources available to assist anyone who wants to take over. “The organizers in Winnipeg and Ontario answer any questions you may have through email and are very helpful,” Cain says. “The online resource has everything you could want for updated forms and information regarding the run. The past organizer passed on everything you need to actually hold run day … like staplers, pens, bags, tape, starting horn, cash box, the whole nine yards!” The most important job, however, is ensuring that the

the organizer is responsible for is keeping the memory, legacy and dreams of Terry Fox alive in Thompson. There’s a reason our whole country remembers him, and

Nickel Belt News photos by Kyle Darbyson Thompson Teachers’ Association president Cathy Pellizzaro led the charge during a June 9, 2018 rally in Thompson regarding provincial education funding. BY KYLE DARBYSON

KYLE@THOMPSONCITIZEN.NET

Cathy Pellizzaro is hoping to represent the Manitoba NDP as their candidate for Thompson in the next provincial election sometime between now and Oct. 6, 2020. The Thompson Teachers’ Association (TTA) president recently got the green light from the party to seek the NDP nomination, which means she could be gunning for current MLA Kelly Bindle’s seat in the Manitoba legislature. Pellizzaro has been an increasingly vocal critic of Bindle and Premier Brian Pallister over the last couple years, and said she decided to run for office after her concerns about education funding were consistently being dismissed. “It’s the frustration of not being felt that you’re heard,” Pellizzaro says. “We’ve been commenting about the lack of education funding for two years, and those are falling on deaf ears. And health care as well. I see it in the hospital when I’m volunteering, the long waiting lines and the overworked nurses and understaffing.” If she does clinch the nomination, Pellizzaro said she would serve as a “voice for the north” by putting these and other concerns front and centre during her campaign. “The north’s been neglected for the last three years, and we need a voice so we can have economic development, improved healthcare, improved education, education funding and make childcare more accessible for younger families.” Outside of serving as a kindergarten to Grade 3

teacher in the School District of Mystery Lake, Pellizzaro does have political experience at the local and provincial level. Not only has she been involved with the TTA since 1993, but Pellizzaro was a member of the 2017-18 provincial executive for the Manitoba Teachers’ Society, where she represented the interests of over 15,000 educators. Pellizzaro also volunteered her time helping federal and provincial NDP candidates run in Northern Manitoba elections throughout the last 20 years, which should give her some insight into mounting an effective campaign. Otherwise, the local union president said she wants to use her status as an active member of the community to bring about meaningful change. “I listen to people, I hear concerns and I act on them,” said Pellizzaro. “I always find an answer and I always look to improve things.” Bindle has been Thompson’s MLA since April 2016, when he beat long-time NDP MLA Steve Ashton by 185 votes. Even though the next provincial election is officially set for October 2020, Pallister recently hinted that Manitobans could be going to the polls sometime this year instead. Pellizzaro is the first person to publicly state she’s seeking the NDP nomination in the Thompson provincial riding. However, a member of the party’s provincial executive wouldn’t say if she is the only potential candidate.

Our glorious moon Backyard Astronomy garyboyle@wondersofastronomy.com

Gary Boyle Stargazing is a wonderful and peaceful past time that anyone can enjoy. From planets to star clusters, galaxies to nebulae, the night sky is a treasure chest of celestial delights. Although astronomy and stargazing are traditionally done in the dark countryside, our glorious moon can be enjoyed from the city as well. The moon was created about 50,000 years after the Earth formed 4.5 billion

years ago. After the sun was created, fine dust particles began sticking together, creating larger sand-sized pieces. The “snowball” effect continued as more stuff clung together and built up to rock, boulder and small asteroid size. Over the next few hundred million years, this process formed about 100 baby planets call planetesimals. Like a cosmic demolition derby, they orbited

the sun at different speeds and directions. One such body called Theia measuring the size of Mars or half that of Earth, hit our world with a glancing blow causing its tilt and ejecting molten rock into space. Like the rings of Saturn, the molten debris formed a ring around our planet and started to coalesce to what we see today. Back then, the moon was only 20,000 kilometres away compared to its average 386,000-kilometre orbit. The moon is still moving away from us at the width of a golf ball per year. As the molten moon was slowly cooling, lighter material rose to create a thin semi-smooth crust. The later heavy bombardment (LHB) lasting tens of millions of years showered the Earth and moon as well as other planets with aster-

oids and comets. Early earth looked like the moon does today. Some massive asteroids fractured the thin lunar surface and allowed molten lava to float up and flood certain areas. These are the lunar maria that appears as the darker smoother regions. The close distance of our two worlds creates a “tidal lock” which allows us to see roughly one side of the lunar surface. The so-called “dark side of the moon” is simply the opposite side that Earth does not see except for the Apollo and other missions that have mapped this side in great detail. Except for about five days of the moon’s 29.5-day orbit, we see our natural satellite at various phases. Through the eyepiece of a telescope, you can observe craters measuring only a few kilometres across. From night to night, long and short shadows produced by the sun, provide a slightly different face. The “terminator” is the dividing line between the lit and unlit areas, produces dramatic shadows. When doing terrestrial photography, the full moon will accent your portrait of distant mountains or trees during twilight but is the worst time to view with a

telescope. Craters appear as circles without depth. And on the topic of photography, the moon is bright enough to be imaged through a telescope. Unlike long exposures of constellations and other fainter objects where a telescope motor drive is needed to ensure pinpoint stars, the bright moon requires extremely short exposures. There are now adaptors that allow you to attach your smartphone to the telescope’s eyepiece. Check out this website for International Space Station sightings.

Former Thompson pastor Ted Goossen, who spearheaded Spiritual Thoughts columns and became a YouTube sensation in 2013, died in Saskatoon at the age of 70 March 31 BY IAN GRAHAM

EDITOR@THOMPSONCITIZEN.NET

Ted Goossen, former Thompson Christian Centre Fellowship pastor and, briefly, an internet ambassador for the city and Canada when a video of him and his wife Mary blowing bubbles at -45 degrees Celsius went viral, died in Saskatoon March 31 at the age of 70. Previously having served nearly 15 years as pastor at Grace Church in Cranberry Portage as well as part-time and then full-time director of Simonhouse Bible Camp, Goossen returned to Northern Manitoba in 2005, after serving for three years as an associate pastor in Winkler and then spending two years as a long-haul truck driver. He stayed 10 in Thompson for 10 years, before heading southwest to Saskatchewan in August 2015 to live closer to two of his and Mary’s children in that province and another in Calgary. Goossen was the driving force behind the creation of the Nickel Belt News’s Spiritual Thoughts column, which rotated between various members of the Thompson Christian Council and still appears occasionally. He was also the type of pastor to express his values through actions rather than just words, having spear-

headed Thompson Christian Centre Fellowship fundraisers to assist with the costs of building the Thompson Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation’s second Our Home Kikinaw house, which raised more than $21,000, $9,000 of which came in the form of matching donations by the church Goossen served as pastor. Depsite his penchant for action, Goossen wasn’t one to keep his thoughts to himself. When the Nickel Belt News didn’t want to run a column by Seventh-Day Adventist Richard Sheppard in 2014, Goossen emailed former editor John Barker to criticize that decision and ended up getting it reversed. A few years earlier, speaking to what was then the Burntwood Regional Health Authority (BRHA) board about their Spiritual Care Committee (SCC), which looked after the spiritual needs of BRHA patients through a rotating roster of clergy and lay people by offering weekly Sunday services at the hospital, Goossen said that spiritual care at the hospital was not in good shape when he arrived in Thompson. “Frankly, the whole aspect of spiritual care at Thompson General Hospital was in a kind of chaos,” he said, with patients tell-

understand other people’s struggles. “Had we not had that experience with our son, I don’t think I would have been able to minister the way I have been,” Goossen said. Born on a farm near

Manitou, Goossen attended university and seminary in Winnipeg before he and Mary moved to Winkler to run a bible camp, prior to his first northern posting in Cranberry Portage beginning in 1985. He is survived by his wife, two

daughters and one son. His funeral will be held today at Forest Grove Community Church in Saskatoon and donations may be made in his memory to Simonhouse Bible Camp.

Top bantam players from Northern Manitoba selected for Director’s Cup Prospects program

Nickel Belt News photo courtesy of Shelley Foster Seven players from Thompson are among the 17 members of the Norman Director’s Cup Prospects team of bantam-aged players born in 2005 that recently competed at a twogame development tournament in Morden. Gus Little, Gorov Ghai, Ethan Portey, Madexx Long, Cayden Nychyporuk, Caleb Richcoon and Ethan Johnstone are the

Thompson players on the team, which also includes Tanner Werbicki, Tye Burke, Joey Lies, Logan Salamondra and Christopher Francouer of Flin Flon as well as Ethan McLean, Jacob Kuzmiak and Connor Slugoski of Creighton, Saskatchewan, Hutton Foster of The Pas and Embry Roberts of Pelican Narrows, Saskatchewan.

Greg Long of Thompson and Greg Kritzer of Flin Flon are the coaches and Shelley Foster of The Pas manages the team, while Thompson’s Cash Long is the team assistant. The players were selected after a Jan. 27 tryout in Snow Lake. “A lot of the players have been on opposing teams for years, but formed friendships

between games, while spending time at various arenas,” says Shelley Foster. “To have the opportunity to play together was a great experience and much fun.” The Director’s Cup Prospects program wraps up with a tournament in Winnipeg May 3-5, when players will play four games with mixed-region teams.
