Woman charged with impaired driving after blowing twice the legal limit of blood alcohol content Three impaired driving charges were laid during the second week of holiday check stops in Thompson, RCMP said Dec. 18. One of the people charged with impaired driving was a woman who was asked to provide a breath sample for a roadside screening device and failed. After being arrested for impaired driving and having another breath sample demanded by police, she blew more than twice the legal blood alcohol content limit and was given a court date in 2019. Her vehicle was also impounded and she was issued tickets for having open liquor in a vehicle and for driving without a licence. A 58-year-old woman from Thompson was charged with impaired driving after admitting to consuming alcohol and blowing over the legal limit. She had been pulled over by Thompson RCMP around 11 p.m. for driving without running lights and then

failing to advance when the traffic light she was stopped at turned green. A driver on Highway 6 near Grand Rapids received an $809 fine and a licence review after being stopped going 158 kilometres per hour in a 100 km/h zone. More than 250 vehicles were stopped during the second week of holiday check stop enforcement, RCMP said, with 28 Highway Traffic Act charges laid. RCMP encourage people to seek out alternatives to drinking and driving such as taking a cab, using a designated driver, walking or calling Operation Red Nose at 204-778-8111 so their volunteers can drive them home in impaired person’s own vehicle. They also remind motorists that, as of Dec. 18, Bill C-46 empowers police to demand a breath sample from anyone they pull over even without suspecting them of being impaired.

Maple Bus Lines expands interim bus service to UCN students, aiming for city contract in 2019 BY KYLE DARBYSON

KYLE@THOMPSONCITIZEN.NET

Maple Bus Lines recently extended their interim morning and afternoon bus service for School District of Mystery Lake (SDML) students that began Nov. 26 to include post-secondary students from the University College of the North (UCN). A Dec. 7 post on the UCN Student Life at Thompson Campus Facebook page said Maple Bus Lines doesn’t require any passes or fees to access this service, which begins at the Eastwood route on Yale at 7:45 p.m. This route is repeated until 8:45 a.m. and starts up again for a return trip at 3:30 p.m., with the last bus leaving R.D. Parker Collegiate at 4:30 p.m. This service will be suspended for the upcoming school holidays, but Maple Bus Lines owner Lori Mann said it will return once school starts again up Jan 7.

17-year-old R.D. Parker Collegiate student arrested after making threats on social media A 17-year-old male student is in police custody after making threats towards R.D. Parker Collegiate students on social media around noon Dec. 18. The suspect, who police say is enrolled at RDPC, was arrested without incident at his residence Dec. 18 and remains in police cus-

tody with charges pending. Thompson RCMP said they were not looking for any other suspects and that their investigation is continuing. “We received a possible threat of violence against the school today at 12:10 p.m.,” said an emergency broadcast email message from RDPC principal Rob

Fisher, sent out around 1:30 p.m. Dec 18. “The RCMP have reported to us that the person making the threat is in RCMP custody. This is now a police matter. We take threats against our school very seriously and all measures are being taken to ensure the safety of everyone involved.”

An automated telephone message to students’ parents regarding the threats said that they implied Dec. 19 as the date they would take place and that police had informed the school that the person who made the threat had been taken into custody prior to 1 p.m. Dec. 18.

KYLE@THOMPSONCITIZEN.COM

Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation (NCN) is hoping to open its new gas station and convenience store, located next to the Mystery Lake Hotel, by the end of the year. NCN’s director for economic development David Kobliski told the Nickel Belt News Dec. 17 that this timetable is definitely doable as long as the gas pumps and canopy are delivered sometime soon. Everything on the convenience store side of the

operation is ready. Even if they don’t launch in 2018, Kobliski said NCN will be holding the business’s grand opening in January. NCN Chief Marcel Moody said tax-free gas will be a big draw for Indigenous motorists, especially since this business is located next to the band’s hotel, bar and new cannabis store that opened its doors Dec. 12. “We want to take advantage of the demographics in the community by providing

tax-free gas for Aboriginal people,” he said Nov. 23. “There’s a market for that in Thompson based on a place like Winnipeg that has taxfree gas for our people and they do really well.” This gas station has been in development for over a year now, after being officially announced back in April 2017. It is located on NCN’s urban reserve property in Thompson, which also includes the Mystery Lake Hotel, NCN also owns and operates Family Foods in the Thompson Plaza.

Kind gesture leads to donation of 366 baby sleepers and onesies to hospital BY AMY TOTTE

It all started in 2015 with a single pink newborn onesie, covered in cupcakes. My daughter was born at the Thompson General Hospital and she was too small for the clothes that I brought for her, so a nurse offered one of their sleepers for my daughter to wear home. I always wanted to repay the favour for their generosity, so I hosted a Babies’ First Halloween party in 2016 and we collected nearly 180 newborn sleepers for the hospital. On December 8, 2018, I hosted a Babies’ First Christmas Party in my son’s honour. It was a free event for families with babies celebrating their first Christmas and

we collected newborn sleepers to once again donate to the Thompson General Hospital maternity ward. In total, we collected nine blankets, 10 hats, 12 shirts, 17 pairs of pants, 18 bibs, five packages of wipes, 30 packages of newborn diapers, 161 newborn onesies, and 205 newborn sleepers. So that’s a total of 366 newborn sleepers/onesies for our local hospital. Our fundraiser would not have been successful without the help of many local businesses and generous citizens. I would like to take this time to thank everyone for your contribution and helping bring some Christmas magic to the babies at our local hospital.

Christmas Is Here “But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.”

I

Happy

Holidays

—Galatians 4:4-5 NIV

t is easy to overlook the fact that Jesus’s birth was the culmination of a series of crises. Mary, who was betrothed to Joseph, found herself “with child.” Surely this was a crisis for Mary and Joseph. Joseph considered “divorcing her quietly,” but was advised by an angel in a dream not to do this. Mary and Joseph then travelled to Bethlehem to fulfill the requirements for the Roman census, and were forced to take refuge in a stable because there was no room in the inn. Mary virtually gave birth to Jesus in a cowshed. While it is tempting to think of Christmas as a joyous celebration, we do well to remember that it has its roots in a series of crises, not the least of which is the existential crisis faced by mankind in general. That is, humanity needs a savior. We simply cannot redeem ourselves, no matter how hard we might try, and thus God in his love and compassion for his creatures sent his son to save us. The darker side of Christmas should remind us that many people struggle at this time of year.

Merry Christmas • Page 7

Due to the holiday season, some of our deadlines and publication dates have changed.

People who are lonely or who have lost a loved one during the previous year may find this time of year difficult. People struggling with alcohol or drug addictions may be unduly tempted at this time of year because of all the merry-making, and some people tend to become depressed because of the shorter daylight hours. Whatever the case may be, we all do well to recall that the first Christmas was a series of difficult events with a very happy ending. Reach out to someone who may be struggling with the holidays, and don’t despair; you’ll make it through the holidays!

The deadline for ad materials for the January 4 paper will be no later than Dec. 20 at 3:00 pm

Our offices will be closed from DECEMBER 24 UNTIL JANUARY 1 The first paper to be published in the New Year will be on JANUARY 4

Year-End Reflections “When people fall down, do they not get up? When someone turns away, do they not return?” —Jeremiah 8:4 NIV

A

s another year ends, we do well to reflect on where we’ve been, and where we want to go in the coming year. Just as hikers are advised to occasionally look back on the trail to get their bearings and insure that the way back home will look familiar, we

should occasionally take stock of where we’ve been. A look back over the previous year should reflect on our successes and our failures. What went well for you during the previous year, and how might you repeat those successes? In what ways did you fail during the previous year, and what can you do to avoid failing again? When we learn from our failures we turn them into something positive. Failures are rarely fatal and almost always provide opportunities for

growth and learning. On the flip side, successes are rarely final, and can sometimes be sources of undeserved pride or cause us to rest on our laurels. The new year will no doubt require the courage to continue the struggle, the wisdom to live well, and the love and compassion to do it with the aim of serving God and our fellows. Reflect on how the failures and successes of the previous year can be improved upon next year. – Christopher Simon
