The Mounties always get their man - on the backcheck Lynn Lake RCMP detachment members removed snow from the surface of West Lynn Lake and the Lynn Lake Fire Department ﬂooded it to create a classic Canadian outdoor rink over the holidays. “The community rink has not been in proper working condition for years,” said Sgt. Kyle McFadyen in a posting on the Manitoba RCMP Facebook page. “And there are very little other activities to do in Lynn Lake.” Because the ofﬁcers in the four-member detachment have to be available to respond to calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the only change taking to the

ice brought to the participating officers’ uniform for the lunch break shinny session, which also included some local kids and their dad, was the exchange of boots for blades. “In order to remain operationally ready, we pretty much live in our uniforms,” said McFadyen. “To change completely out of uniform would prevent us from being operationally ready.” When offi cers aren’t attending to official duties, building relationships with the people they serve is a must. “The little time off we do get, we are dedicated to interacting with our communities,” said McFadyen.

Hospital pediatric unit receives $2,850 donation A recent donation was made to the Thompson General Hospital pediatric unit. Representatives from Vale Utilities and Diamond Dance Academy presented TGH pediatric unit staff with a cheque for $2,850 which will be used to purchase three pediatric thermometers, artwork for the pediatric rooms, portable magic boards for drawing and Christmas presents for pediatric patients that were in hospital on Christmas Day. The money was raised from the proceeds of a silent auction and donations made to

the Vale Utilities Christmas party and Diamond Dance fundraising social. Accepting the donation on the pediatric unit’s behalf were Kate Whitton, patient care manager, and Lyndon Cheys, RN. The Northern Health Region would like to extend their appreciation and thanks to both Vale Utilities and Diamond Dance Academy for this generous donation and their ongoing commitment to improving the health and wellness of the patients of the Thompson General Hospital.

My Take on Snow Lake mjaxon@gillamnet.com At the end of the narrow road that runs north behind Hudbay Minerals’ Snow Lake Mine sits a small wooden structure that appears long forgotten. It is obvious there is some architecture to it and that it might have been used as something other than a residence. It is, in fact, the Snow Lake Ski Club’s ski chalet and although vandals and the elements have taken their toll on it over past decades, it was once an immaculate and well-used building. Built by volunteers in the mid-1970s, the chalet is somewhat unique as it was built around a tree growing up through the centre of the structure. It also has a deck that runs around it, which was a project spearheaded by the late Russ Young. Mr. Young was so involved in the construction of this deck and within the ski club itself that after construction it was named “The Russ Young Deck.” Young was for many years an HBM&S warehouse man. But more than this, he was a vital member

This included ski lessons and road trips for races. ing phase. “Clare (Russ’s wife) was never far away from the action,” Zamzow added. “And we knew that refreshment would always be given with a smile.” Hugh Burton, a former resident and an active member of the ski club when he resided here, concurred with Zamzow. “Russ was the starter for our races,” he noted. “We used to have the Northern Cup race circuit between us, The Pas, and Flin Flon. His son David raced with the Jackrabbits for a few years.” As noted, since those glory days, the deck and the sign denoting it have fallen on hard times. Young’s granddaughter Chelsea Miller and her partner Darcy Tower took notice of the disrepair late last year. “The last time Darcy and I were quadding, he stopped in front of a building and I asked where we were,” said Miller in explanation. “I was shocked to realize we were up at the ski chalet, because it is so overgrown and really started to

deteriorate, I didn’t even recognize it. I was almost crying when I saw the sign hanging there on a building that didn’t look like it was too far from falling to the ground. I knew it needed to be brought home at some point, so that the family could keep it safe and hang it somewhere that it will be appreciated.” Tower removed the sign from the deck and took it home with an idea in mind. He and Chelsea planned to reﬁ nish it to its original splendour and present it to Miller’s mother Laury at Christmas as a memento to her late father. “I’m very happy that the ski club agreed, and allowed Darcy to take it, reﬁnish it, and present it to her,” said Chelsea. “Darcy gave her this sign on Christmas Eve, after Santa had paid the kids a visit at our house. She was moved to a few tears and was very grateful that she was able to have the sign, and recalled just how much time my Avi (grandfather) volunteered with the ski club.”

A 33-year-old Little Grand Rapids man is facing charges after RCMP seized 202 bottles of whisky, one bottle of vodka and marijuana packaged for sale while executing a Controlled Drug and Substances Act warrant at a residence in the dry community around 10:30 p.m. Jan. 8. The man is charged with possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking and unlawful possession of liquor and was released on a promise to appear in court in Little Grand Rapids in March.

Being securely loved about more than the necessities of life The other morning I had a dream that woke me with screaming cries of “No, no, no, no, no!” I caught my breath and my racing heart seemed to slow. Aware but still in the dream and it took me deep again. Our children were dying. A neighbour’s little girl died. Mine died. Others died. We had bought them those old-fashioned dolls that weren’t baby dolls but a bit older, dressed in fancy clothes and hats, and stored in a large box with a clear lid so we could look but not touch. The dreams we had for our girls . . . and an older girl came home from her life with drugs but she was going to go back to it. That’s when, in my dream, I grabbed her, wrapped her in my arms and cradled her screaming “No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no” until I woke. I said I would confront her drug dealer. “He’ll kill you.” I don’t care. I will stop him. “It won’t stop any of them.” If all the mothers did it. “He’ll kill you all.” She left! As I went into another room I passed my baby sleeping on the couch. I had neglected him. Picking him up I knew that I had to let go of the ones who do not want to be protected and I had to care for the ones I still can care for. We are at war but we have no choice; we have to live. The world we thought was safe is not safe and we still have to live, but how? My breath still catches as I write about this dream. A

There is war in this world just as there was when Jesus was born. We are at war but we have no choice, we have to live. There will always be a baby waiting for us. We must protect the ones we can protect and we must let go of those who choose to be unprotected. We must make a place within our relationships where people feel valued, but more than that, where people can feel loved securely and strengthened to resist the dealers of death of body, mind, heart and soul. To do that we need to remove from ourselves all those things that participate in or come from the world of death. This is spiritual work that frees us from fear, denial of our own needs, corrosive anger, and cynicism, self-hatred, dishonesty with self and others, and the desire to use others for our own purposes. These things make it impossible to make a place where people feel loved securely. “Loved securely” is a

phrase that replaces “unconditional love” for me because it focuses our attention on the person loved rather than on the one loving. People feel loved securely when their basic needs are met with graciousness. Anyone can provide another person with food but when we feed a person with an attitude of love for their very being we meet their need for secure love. The same is true of how we clothe a person, provide shelter and warmth, share knowledge and skill, and play with them. People feel loved securely when they are recognized for who they are, as more than a name or as a relative or friend, but for who they are as individuals with their own hopes, aspirations and experiences. This is spiritual work that ﬂ ows from a calm centre within us where we cling to God and are ourselves loved securely by the love that is eternal, that knows no end. Thanks be to God. Rev. The 16-year-old, who was selected by the Raiders in the seventh round of the 2015 bantam draft, is currently in his rookie season with the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s OCN Blizzard, where he has nine goals and 10 assists and 22 penalty minutes in 38 games so far. Nachbaur played 30 games with the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League Norman Northstars in 2015-16, recording 14 goals and nine assists as well as 89 penalty minutes.

The Salvation Army in Thompson has set a new record for donations collected over the holiday season this year, at a grand total of $50,550. Ironically, this was the ﬁ rst year that Salvation Army director Roy Bladen decided not to set a target for collections. “I always set a goal, but I get stressed out when I can’t get there. So I

said this year, I’m leaving it to the man above to see what he can do for us.” The previous record for the season was $42,000, with an average year bringing in $40,000 “if we’re lucky,” according to Bladen. Last season, due to funding shortages, the Salvation Army was forced to cut their food bank back to a bimonthly schedule; the bounty means that Bladen and the Salvation Army can

breathe a sigh of relief for the remainder of the season, and ensure that the food bank program remains on schedule. “We’re so thankful for the support of all the people who gave in whichever way they gave, whether it was their time or ﬁnances,” Bladen says. “It all comes together at the bottom line. The spirit of sharing and caring was very much alive in Thompson this year.”

ARTHUR ADAM NEEPIN It is with great sadness we annoounce that Arthur Adam Neepin, 62, passed away on December 13, 2016. Art was born March 18, 1954 in The Pas, Manitoba to Wesley Neepin and Stella Neepin. Art grew up in Northern Manitoba and later settled in Winnipeg. Art is survived by his children, Jason Neepin (Jennifer) of Gillam, Keith Neepin and Adam Neepin of Ottawa and Marie Ida Ross of Thompson. His parents Stella Neepin of Thompson, His father and step mother, Wesley and Betty Neepin of Prince Albert. His twin brother, Raymond Neepin (Maryann) of Winnipeg. His sisters Clara Neepin, Doris Neepin (Warren) of Thompson. Rita Chaisson (Elvis) of St. Albert. As well as grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends. Art was preceded in death by his grandparents Adam and Nancy Neepin, Henry and Eva Dick, brother Wesley Neepin and Art’s dear daughter Joanne Neepin. Improvements to provincial nominee program will speed up processing MLA Report kelly.bindle.mla.office@gmail.com Kelly Bindle By enhancing the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP), our new government is making this initiative an important and key part of our commitment to rebuilding the northern economy. The MPNP, as it was run under the previous government, clearly needed to be ﬁxed. During much of that previous administration’s decade of debt, decay, and decline, the program had people on its waiting list for years at a time. This unreasonable delay was not fair to them or to prospective employers, and did

little to boost Manitoba’s economy. At no additional cost to taxpayers, our new government is improving this system by ensuring all MPNP applications are assessed within six months, rather than the previous government’s preferred time of 42 months. Economic growth is driven in part by immigration, which ﬁlls targeted labour market needs and is a gateway for innovation in Manitoba’s economy. We are renewing the Provincial Nominee Program as a way to bring skilled immigrant

workers into an integral role in the development of our Manitoba labour market, in partnership with industry and training organizations. The most recent labour market forecast for the province projects 177,800 job openings in Manitoba between now and 2021, with demand for workers in numerous sectors including trades, transportation, ﬁnance, services, health care and business. Immigrants

to Manitoba are anticipated to ﬁll at least 25 per cent of these projected positions. The Addictions Foundation of Manitoba (AFM) is a Crown Agency that contributes to the health and resilience of Manitobans by providing addictions services and supporting healthy behaviors. Reporting to the Supervisor, Residential Programs, Residential Care Workers provide client and facility support. These positions require a commitment to a client centred philosophy and approach to the development and support of AFM programs and client services. Responsibilities: • Provide support and be present where clients are. • Respond warmly, politely and helpfully to everyone, including all visitors to the building. • Respond appropriately to emergency crisis situations, modelling to clients how this is done in a positive way. • Conduct facility orientations. • Facilitation of educational sessions and client house meetings. • Performing light housekeeping/maintenance. • Building security duties. • Coordination and distribution of client and program supplies. • Copying program materials. • Responding to telephone calls. • Documentation according to role requirements. • Demonstrates the ability to operate Microsoft software applications, internet and email communications. ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: • Provide technical and policy support to the Health Director and Health Staff • Coordinate, schedule and preparation of meetings; • Draft, edit and proof selected correspondence, memorandums and reports; • Ensure that all minutes and decisions related to the responsibilities of the Health Director be recorded and brought forward for review and follow up; • Carry out necessary research, document/literature reviews and provide information database that will be comprised of multiple sources of information; • Familiarity with Health Governance, Public Health, Info tech, Addictions, Land Base activities promoting health, Harm Reduction Initiative, Renal disease will be considered asset. • Be prepared to be fl exible and assist in other duties where there are deadlines or unusual situations that require attention, as well as, perform other related duties and special projects as assigned. EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS: • Post-secondary education and three years’ experience in an offi ce environment or similar position. • Excellent oral, written and communication skills. • Ability to set priorities, handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and work independently and as part of a team. • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and follow through. • Interest in and ability to work cooperatively in a fast paced offi ce with diverse staff. • Ability to handle sensitive and /or confi dential information with diplomacy. • Profi cient in Windows and Microsoft offi ce applications including wordprocessing, spreadsheet, and presentation software. • The ability to speak/understand a First Nation language will be considered an asset. Grade 12 education. Suitable combination of education and experience working in a residential facility, addictions related employment experience and/or volunteer work. Experience working from a client centred perspective. Excellent interpersonal skills. The ability to work within and contribute to a positive team environment. An understanding of, and sensitivity to, working with culturally diverse populations is essential. Valid CPR-C with AED training and First Aid certification are required prior to beginning work. Knowledge of the addictions field is required. Fluency in English (French verbal and written an asset).
