Victim of 2015 homicide in Gods Lake Narrows died from a blunt force injury that could not have been caused by a hand or foot alone, court hears BY IAN GRAHAM

Crystal Andrews died as result of extensive blunt force trauma to her head, the doctor who performed the autopsy said at the trial of her accused killer Michal Okemow in Thompson Jan. 14. Andrews was found dead in Gods Lake Narrows in November 2015, a little more than a day after she
went missing while walking home after a social and an after party. Dr. John Younes, Manitoba’s chief medical examiner, said Andrews had multiple injuries, including many defensive wounds on her right arm, but that only one of these injuries, a skull fracture on the back of her head, would have been fatal by itself. He said the injury could not have

been caused by a hand or foot by itself, but only by a heavy, hard object similar to a rock, a cinder block, or a weapon that could swung like a baseball bat. Cpl. Maria Forrester of the RCMP Forensic Identification Section, who was stationed in Winnipeg at the time of Andrews’s death, travelled to Gods Lake Narrows Nov. 9, 2015 to document the scene where her body was found. Andrews was found in the woods a few metres away from an ATV trail close to where the winter road enters the community. She was clothed when she was found, though she was not wearing shoes. One shoe was found about 45 metres away from Andrews’s body, which was about 285 metres from the SUV belonging to Michael Okemow’s father that had been found stuck in the mud on the morning of Nov. 8, 2015, the same day Andrews was last seen alive. A search of the SUV conducted by Forrester only turned up DNA belonging to Michael Okemow and his father. Forrester said that when she compared the treads

She later changed her opinion about that when she learned that bruising happens in the spaces between where items like shoe treads contact the skin, rather than where the treads themselves contact it. RCMP reserve Const. Shelly Massey testified that her comparison of Okemow’s shoes and bruising on Andrews’s
face that appeared to have been caused by being stomped or kicked showed similarities. “It could have been made by this pair of DC shoes,” she said, though it could also have been made by other DC shoes with the same general characteristics. Massey also testified that two other officers who examined the shoes independently found that the comparison was inconclusive, but that the three of them together settled on a collective conclusion that
the bruising and the shoes showed similar characteristics. The size of the shoe that caused the bruising could not be determined, Massey said. Court also heard a statement of facts agreed upon by the Crown and the defence. This statement included the fact that a vaginal swab taken from Andrews during the autopsy was found to contain DNA contributions from two people and that one of those DNA samples matched Michael Okemow’s.

CBC North Country losing its host for the second time in three years BY IAN GRAHAM

Fifteen months after returning to the air with a new host following the retirement of long-time fixture Mark Szyszlo, CBC’s Thompson-based North Country radio program is once again at risk of falling silent. Ramraajh Sharvendiran, who moved to Thompson at the end of August 2018 and took to the air on Oct. 8 of that year, was announced Jan. 10 as the new co-host of The St. John’s Morning Show with Krissy Holmes in Newfoundland. “I am so excited,” Sharvendiran told CBC News. “I really wanted to move to another region that has another experience that I haven’t been exposed to. St. John’s made sense.” Sharvendiran’s last day on the air in Northern Manitoba is expected to be next week. He begins his new gig in Newfoundland Feb. 24. The Toronto-born Sharvendiran, whose parents immigrated to Canada from Sri Lanka, only got into radio broadcasting as a career a couple of years
ago, though he hosted a York University campus radio show for eight years, continuing the role after graduating and beginning a job in public health. “At the five-year mark I decided it was either time to pursue this academically through a master’s in public health or social work or to pursue what I had kept on the backburner for, by that point, eight years, which was radio,” he said shortly after his arrival in Thompson. “This was probably one of the most challenging jobs I’ve had,” he told CBC this month. Prior to Sharvendiran’s first day on the air, North Country last graced the airwaves on March 31, 2017, former host Szyszlo’s last day on the job after more than 30 years behind the microphone. Szyszlo was also an import from Ontario, starting out as a freelance radio journalist before being named host of the noon-hour North Country show and later taking over the regional morning show as well. House of Commons and presenting a petition with 1,300 signatures just days before the CBC’s May 15, 2009 announcement that the
programs were no longer on the chopping block. The La Ronge bureau was permanently shut down at the end of February 2012.
Bombers photographer tells players’ stories through film BY ERIC WESTHAVER FLIN FLON REMINDER
Ever looked at a photo of the Flin Flon Bombers in action at the Whitney Forum? In all likelihood, the person responsible for that image is Cranberry Portage photographer Kelly Jacobson. The old saying goes “a picture is worth a thousand words”, but Jacobson’s best shots, whether they’re of onice action or the softer side of Canada’s winter game, speak volumes. Within the pages of The Reminder during the past five seasons, her work has accompanied hundreds of thousands of words of Bomber coverage. Jacobson, originally from Kelvington, Sask., has experimented with photography her entire life. “I first picked up a camera when I was a teenager. I always wanted to. It didn’t matter if it was a house party, a volleyball game, at the rink, I always had some kind of camera,” she said. “I shot cousins, brothers, but it wasn’t too fancy and I was never too thrilled with it.” A lifelong fan of the game, Jacobson’s kids have been involved in hockey for years, with games often featuring the proud mama at ice-level, lens at the ready. While she had experience, she rarely shot games in Flin Flon until a family member made the trip up north to join the Bombers. Midway through the 2014-15 season, Joel Kocur joined the club. The son of

With family on the ice, Jacobson wanted to shoot photos to send back to their relatives across the country. “My real passion came when Joel joined the team. I was so nervous. I didn’t even know if I would be allowed into the rink with a camera,” she said. “That’s when it took off.” Not long after, some Bomber officials took notice of Jacobson’s work. Former team president and longtime volunteer Tanya Benoit struck up a report with Jacobson and helped her distribute photos to the players’ families, using social media and the team’s existing list of contacts to send the shots out. If there was a Bomber event in need of a photographer, Benoit would get in touch. “She’d make sure, when games were on, that she’d always text me. She’d always ask, ‘Can you be here?’ or ‘There’s an event we’re holding, can we get you there?’” she said. Jacobson has been at most Bomber home games since then, with her Canon camera and telephoto bazooka of a lens - “it’s heavy, it’s expensive, but it takes some good photos,” usually at icelevel. She’s travelled for key games, including last year’s crucial but unsuccessful Game 7 matchup between the Battlefords North Stars and the Bombers. “I remember the first time

A key for Jacobson is to document each player not just as an on-ice figure, but as a human being. When she describes the players on the teams she shoots, she always refers to them as “my kids” or “my boys”. Some of her favourite photos involve players joking around or having fun in the pregame skate. “My passion is hockey and I think you can see that in the photos. The smiles the kids are giving, the little gestures – when I’m looking through the lens and you see a couple of the players
on the sidelines, joking and smiling, that’s what I go for, the faces and the eyes. You can really see the soul of the kid,” she said. These days, Jacobson shoots pictures in an official capacity with the MJHL’s OCN Blizzard in addition to shooting with the Bombers. She got involved with the Blizzard the same way she did with the Bombers – by having a family member join the team. Jacobson has been given all-around access to the Blizzard, joining the club on a recent southern road trip and coming into the dressing rooms pre- and post-game. “To be allowed in there is an honour. To share the
photos with the parents, who may not get to the rink or see the dressing rooms, the stuff on the walls, they get to see the world their sons are in. Some of them are in the States or the east coast, the west coast. It’s for the memories of their kids doing what they love,” she said. In 2017, Jacobson’s photos took on a new meaning. Following the Humboldt bus crash, photos Jacobson took of Broncos players during games at the Whitney Forum were often used by news outlets reporting on the disaster. One photo featuring crash victim and organ donor Logan Boulet, taken by Jacobson during a pre-game skate in his last game in the Forum, was used by Boulet’s family as part of the Green Shirt Day organ donation campaign in his memory. Closer to home, Jacobson occasionally shoots photos for other northern Manitoba teams, including the junior B OCN Storm, the Norman Wild girls’ bantam AAA team, minor hockey clubs and others. Both the SJHL and MJHL frequently feature her photos on league pages and social media profiles. Late last year, her work was featured in a GameOn magazine piece about indigenous players in northern Manitoba. “I love it. I love being in the rink,” she said. “The north is like a gold mine for talent and it’s untapped.” Jacobson’s photos for the Bombers and Blizzard are
featured on separate Facebook groups made for both teams. Most of the members are players’ parents, siblings or other relatives, with some team organizers, league officials and media people added in for good measure. Her Instagram page boasts thousands of in-game photos from several northern teams. Even opposing players get in touch with Jacobson through Instagram when they come north to see if she can shoot some spare shots before or during the game. “I’ve got kids from La Ronge, Nipawin, Yorkton, all over that are following me. Last year in Battlefords, three of the boys said ‘We’re going to be in your town playing, can you get some photos of us?’” she said. Jacobson also shoots photos at events involving her employer, Frontier School Division. If there’s a photo of an event in Cranberry Portage featured in The Reminder, whether it’s a fiddle jam or a fun run, there’s a good chance Jacobson shot it. While photography in the outside world is all well and good, the real magic happens inside the rink. “If I could do this full time, get a paycheque and have the confidence to do it ... maybe I would,” she said. “It’s for the parents. It’s for the memories. Their parents have made frames and scrapbooks and had them there for them when they come home after the season.”

Winterfest 2020 is a little more than a month away. The carnival, which has been running for 48 years, celebrating the North and its traditional and non-traditional winter activities, runs Feb. 21-23. We are asking people to bring in non-perishable donations of breakfast items that will be donated to the Salvation Army food bank.” The Boreal Discovery Centre and the Manitoba Metis Federation will be hosting outdoor activities on Feb. 22 from 1-4 p.m. “That’ll be snowshoeing, tug of war, ring toss, campfire, animal calls, crafts, pelts and some paw prints available for
viewing,” Dick said. “They have a passport that they give to the kids, and you get stamped for each activity that you participate in. There will also be hot dogs and hot chocolate for a minimal fee. That’s the only thing that costs money all weekend.” Children’s performer Mr. Mark is also on the agenda. “He has worked with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra,” Dick explained. “He’s bringing his talents to Thompson, and will be performing on Saturday. There will be fireworks on Fri-

“A snow stage will be set up, and a warm-up area. There’s also a snow sculpture contest. This year’s theme for the contest is Manitoba 150. We are also doing a display of Winterfest past. Sexual assaults, intoxicated persons, resident break-andenters and assaults went up from previous year in 2019 BY IAN GRAHAM

The Thompson RCMP’s calls for service rose by more than 2,000 – an average of 6.7 calls per day – from 2018 to reach about 20,800 in 2019, the detachment’s acting officer-in-charge told the City of Thompson public safety committee at their Jan. 9 meeting. Sexual assaults went up from 2018, said Sgt. Chris Hastie, possibly because people are more comfortable reporting them to police than they have been in the past, as did the number of people taken to cells under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act and the number of residential break-and-enters. “There’s been a notable increase in assaults as
well,” said Hastie, noting that many of them are complaints about pushing and shoving rather than actual fighting and that police do extra patrols on Friday and Saturday nights, resulting in more enforcement targeted at people who are unruly and intoxicated in public. Traffic infractions and charges also spiked thanks to the Thompson RCMP detachment having a dedicated traffic enforcement officer, Hastie said, resulting in a large increase in the number of people arrested for impaired driving. Most of those impaired driving charges are for people who have been drinking, with an estimate of fewer than 10 drug-impaired operation charges being laid in Thompson last year. City manager Anthony
McInnis said he recently did a ride-along with the Thompson RCMP’s traffic enforcement officer and appreciates the work he’s doing. “We can see the payoff in the number of people we’re getting off the road who could be a menace,” said the city manager. Hastie said the officer feels strongly about traffic enforcement and people stopped by him feel strongly as well. “Some people more or less despise this person,” Hastie said, noting that in a recent five-day stretch, 24 people driving unregistered vehicles, one of them a brand-new 2019 pickup truck, had been stopped “which I think is crazy for a small little town.” Hastie said police were

Juniper School in Thompson has received a $5,000 grant from Share2Care, a mental health action initiative, funded by The Co-operators through the Physical and Health Education Canada Teach Resiliency program, which gathers “favourable practices from across Canada to share and inspire school communities.” The Physical and Health Education Canada Teach Resiliency program website states that “2019 marked the second consecutive year of the Share2Care campaign, and saw school champions from across the country share 316 mental health initiatives supporting teacher and student mental health – 92 more than the previous year.” Five schools were selected as the 2019 Share2Care recipients, including Juniper, F.H. Collins Secondary School in Whitehorse, Yukon, Robert H. Lagerquist
Sr. Public School in Brampton, Ont., Mount Stewart Consolidated School in Mount Stewart, P.E.I, and Shambhala School in Halifax, Nova Scotia. “We were one of the lucky recipients of the grant across Canada, to be able to pursue our land-based education,” said Juniper principal Lucy Mayor. “One of our teachers, Mrs. [Alysa] Ferguson, applied for and received the grant, and so they are here to present it today.” Mayor said the funds will be used to continue landbased education programming at Juniper. “Primarily with a group of three teachers who have been co-ordinating the program for three years,” she said. “The land-based program incorporates various learning and teachings from Indigenous perspectives. They are working hard to build positive relationships with each other, and learning to incorporate more of the past, and herit-
ages they’ve been learning about.” Mayor explained that land-based education is being used at different levels of the school. “They incorporate teachings of the medicine wheel,” she said. “As well as the seven teachings, truth and reconciliation calls for justice, Orange Shirt Day and Spirit Bear.” A large part of land-based education is camp days at Juniper School, which allow children the opportunity to learn and experience traditional outdoor skills. A significant amount of the Share2Care funds, which are additional to the school’s core budget, will be allocated to the continuation of camp days – specifically food requirements, as well as paying and recognizing participating experts. “We do camps right on our playground,” explained Mayor. “The kids are learning outdoor education right here.” Mayor explained that the
main intention of Share2Care’s grant is promoting student mental health. “We want to address some of the special needs that kids might have,” she said. “Caring and empathy are a big part, in terms of respecting one another, and the elders. The other part is building patience, coping strategies and resilience. Just being more appreciative and having self-worth.” Grant McManes, board representative for Manitoba and Nunavut with Physical and Health Education Canada, presented the cheque to Juniper staff. “We want to recognize and support schools across Canada that are working in lots of different ways to support mental health initiatives,” he said. “So, schools submitted applications to us, and Juniper was recognized as one of the top five schools, receiving a $5,000 award from The Co-operators to help continue the land-based education program.”

DIRECTIONS 1. Coat the beef strips with a thin layer of flour. Shake to remove any excess. 2. In a deep pan, heat the butter and olive oil over high heat. Sear the beef on all sides. Add the mushrooms and garlic and continue to cook for 3 minutes. Add the beef and stir to combine. 4. Add the red wine, beef broth, thyme and mustard and stir well.
