Wildfire evacuees return to Marcel Colomb First Nation

Around 100 Marcel Colomb First Nation members returned home June 29 after evacuating due to a forest fire that came dangerously close to their community. After arriving in Lynn Lake on June 24, these resident were then provid-
ed with lodgings, food and other necessary support at the Mystery Lake Hotel in Thompson since June 26. Now that the blaze is under control and the evacuation has been lifted, all the displaced residents left Thompson the morning/afternoon of June 29 and arrived home safely
around 5:30 p.m. that same day. “I want to thank the Red Cross for doing such an awesome job keeping us together, making us feel at home,” said resident Evelyn Sinclair. “And Mystery Lake [Hotel] for welcoming us and Lynn Lake for being there for us for two
Ask the community for views on alcohol Continued from Page 1 I can’t confirm that but there’s definitely a need for homes to be built in the community.” Another thing Primrose would like to see is more outdoor recreational facilities in his community. “The kids are very active and they want to do things,” he says. “We have an arena which is probably 80 per cent unoccupied or even more than that. People don’t want to be cooped up inside a building in the summer time. If you’re going to do something, build something simple like walking trails or hiking trails. Something that doesn’t take a genius to build. Quad trails. Instead of bombing around the streets in Nelson House they can go around the bush.” Greater beautification through simple tasks like mowing grassy areas is an-
other goal. “Nelson House is a beautiful place when it’s looked after but nobody looks after that in the summer time,” Primrose said. “They need equipment. I’m sure we can afford something like that to put high school kids to work in the summer.” His ideas aren’t the only ones that are important and Primrose says that, if elected, he would seek input from the community, particularly on the issue of alcohol. “There’s suppression towards alcohol,” he said. ”When you suppress people you create other problems, you create the black market economy. What I’d like to do is ask the people what do they want to do. I don’t think the community’s ever been asked as to how they want to deal with it. Nobody’s ever done that.
Nobody’s ever questioned it but it’s there.” His time out of politics has given the former chief a bit of a different perspective on things. “You get so immune,” as chief, he says. “You’re dealing with all kinds of issues including deaths in the community. What happens is you get to the point where you don’t really feel or you don’t get emotion. When I left it’s like, ‘Oh, it’s different. I could show emotion and I’m alive. It was an interesting dynamic.” Primrose said it isn’t a huge deal for him whether he wins or not but he does want to see the race to become the next chief be a competitive one. “If it’s not competitive people tend to get complacent,” he says. “It’s not the end of the world if I don’t get in. It’s not to say I won’t give it my best shot either.”
days. They made it so easy for us.” Even though this crisis has passed, Jessie Horodecki, a community outreach co-ordinator for the Red Cross, said they’re still being kept on high alert, especially since an irregular wildfire season in Manitoba has already lead to evacu-
ations in other Indigenous communities like Little Grand Rapids. “Usually forest fire season is July-August. This year it started in May,” she said. “So we’re definitely looking for more volunteers in Thompson. The volunteers we have are fantastic, but we could
always use more.” To find out more about how to become a volunteer for the Red Cross, please visit www.redcross.ca/ heroeswantedmb. By the end of June, Manitoba had already had295 fires, which is well above the 20-year average of 210 to that date.

MP Niki Ashton tells chamber that provincial and federal governments lack accountability BY KYLE DARBYSON
KYLE@THOMPSONCITIZEN.NET
After wrapping up her latest session in Parliament, Churchill-Keewatinook Aski NDP MP Niki Ashton dropped by the Thompson Chamber of Commerce June 27 to chat about the economic challenges facing Northern Manitoba. As a resident of Thompson, Ashton told chamber members that she is disheartened by unprecedented operational changes that are currently taking place at Vale Manitoba Operations, which are already having a ripple effect on the community as a whole. “There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t have a conversation with somebody, including folks from my generation, that talk about the impacts of job losses on them, on their families, saying bye to people that are leaving our community, talking to people that have sold their house at a loss.” Ashton also took time to talk about the challenges that are affecting Churchill, which lost its port in 2016 and has been without rail service for more than a year. “This has had devastating impacts on people’s day-today lives, devastating impacts in terms of various industries that Churchill depends on, and the community has seen an exodus of folks,” she said. “They’ve seen a huge dependence and reliance on the food bank and folks have been going through a really, really dif-
ficult time.” However, Ashton went on to say that these setbacks didn’t pop up over night. Instead, she said it’s been the direct result of the provincial and federal government’s neglect of Northern Manitoban interests over the last couple decades. The MP pointed out that a lot of this economic strife in Churchill can be traced back to 1997, when the federal government sold both the Port of Churchill and the Hudson Bay line to OmniTrax, a private railroad company based out of Denver, Colorado. Not only did OmniTrax shut down the port two years ago, they’ve also been dragging their heels to fix the railway, which has been partially washed out since May 2017. “If we’re really going to talk about the national interest, let’s talk about the challenges we’re facing here at home,” said Ashton. “Having the federal government take over the Port of Churchill and the railway and work with local partners to bring it back into operation [would be a solution].” In terms of what Thompson residents are facing with Vale, Ashton said the Manitoba government is also dropping the ball went it comes to lending financial support. This was a reference to Mayor Dennis Fenske’s ongoing dispute with Growth, Enterprise and Trade Minister Blaine Pedersen, who

corner of the province is affected. Well, Snow Lake has a new doctor, which is great news. But as the Northern Health Region is a government organization, it is restricted in what it can currently publish. So, beyond that news, and the physician’s start date, few details will be available until after the election on July 17. And remember that spiffy new brand we were supposed to receive from Travel Manitoba by the end
of April? Things on that end were delayed, and Travel Manitoba is a Crown corporation, so it will be radio silence on that end for the next few weeks. This adds a delay to any non-local advertising by the City of Flin Flon, as the city is waiting for the brand to help streamline its advertising. Plus, the anticipation is killing us – who really wants to wait for this exciting thing that will draw attention to our area? Nobody wants to see a sitting government win an election through a welltimed, joyful announcement prior to voting day, because that would just be gross. There’s a reason this law exists, but it extends too far. If Crown corporations were exempt from the law, business during an election period could look a little more like business as usual.

ET Blades celebrates 25 years in Thompson BY KYLE DARBYSON
KYLE@THOMPSONCITIZEN.NET
Despite less than ideal weather conditions, ET Blades owner Earl Timmons was in high spirits June 30, since he was commemorating the fact that his business has been opened in the Hub of the North for the last quarter century. In order to show his appreciation for all these years of success selling sports equipment, Timmons provided his customers with a free barbecue lunch outside the Westwood Mall. “I’m just very thankful to all of my patrons that have kept me around for this long and I’ve been proud to serve the community of Thompson,“ he said. Even though Timmons now oversees two ET Blades locations in town, as well as the clothing outlet Kicks and Threads that is owned by his wife Sandy, this business had very humble beginnings as a small
pro shop inside the C.A. Nesbitt Arena. “I was sharpening skates with my dad,” said Timmons. “He taught me how to sharpen skates when I was a young man and I continued on after he retired.” While his father ran that original business, Timmons took the operation to a whole different level in 1993 when he incorporated ET Blades as a company and bought their first standalone brick-and-mortal location on Hayes Road. Ever since then, Timmons has managed to establish ET Blades as a prominent part of both the local business and sports community. “I guess it’s been a labour of love,” he said. “It was slow and methodical, I guess you could say. Because when I started in Hayes Road I had no idea what I was doing. I just went ahead and did it, because I’m a sports guy.”
Owner Earl Timmons serves free hotdogs outside the Westwood Mall ET Blades location June 30, his business’s 25th anniversary. Timmons told the Nickel Belt News that he’s been sharpening skates for four decades.

Continued from Page 4 large transparent window as a key security feature. The window showcases a metallic rendering of the vaulted dome ceiling of the Library of Parliament in Ottawa. Capped by arched windows that flood the room with natural light, the Library of Parliament is a stunning example of Gothic Revival architecture and acts as a storehouse of knowledge to help shape Canada’s laws. Also featured on the note is an excerpt from Section 15 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, a reminder of the laws that enshrine human rights in Canada: Every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination … Completing the new note’s human rights and social justice theme is a laurel leaf pattern, an ancient symbol of justice, found in the bottom right corner on the back of the note. The laurel leaf appears in the grand entrance hall of the Supreme Court of Canada, the nation’s final court of appeal.
