Province will soon stop using government-owned jets for air ambulance flights The provincial government announced June 6 that the Lifeflight air ambulance program for critically injured patients outside a 200-kilometre radius of Winnipeg will no longer be using two government-owned Citation as early as this month. The province says this is because recruiting for highly specialized positions related to operating these jets is difficult due to the specific training and qualifications required along with significant competition from private-sector employers. The government-owned jets were used in about 50 per cent of Lifeflight missions last year. In 2016-17, privately

operated air ambulances transported 6,575 patients, while publicly operated air ambulances including helicopters, the Southern Air Ambulance program and Lifeflight, transported a total of 1,331, about 20 per cent as many. The provincial government says only one province has a fully government owned and operated air ambulance service and that most jurisdictions in Canada use privately owned and operated air ambulance services. “This was widely predicted and risks being a serious downgrade in service,” said Manitoba Liberal leader Dougald Lamont. “The Pallister government has been reckless in hand-

ling emergency services and the argument ‘everyone is doing it’ says nothing about whether it is effective or even works. If these jets are being replaced by private turboprops, this is a serious downgrade in service. Private aircraft cannot land in over two dozen northern communities and turboprops take hours longer. The PCs have bungled this file. Pilots started to bail after the PCs threatened to privatize, destabilizing the service.” Manitoba Government and General Employees’ Union (MGEU) president Michelle Gawronsky said issuing a request for proposals to provide air services to the government in July 2018 made it even more difficult to hang on to qualified staff. “Once they did that, staffing became a challenge under this cloud of uncertainty and the government used the crisis it had created to justify privatizing this essential service,” she said, noting that flight nurses, pilots, maintenance crews and doctors expressed concern about plans to privatize air ambulance services. “It is absolutely shameful that this government would not listen to the doctors, the

RCMP find suspect who pointed a gun in Tadoule Lake after 15-hour search Thompson RCMP officers flew to Tadoule Lake June 9 after receiving a report of a man pointing a firearm and barricading himself inside a residence. The call from the isolated community about 330 kilometres north of Thompson – which does not have RCMP officers stationed in it full-time

– came around 5:30 p.m. and police arrived via an RCMP Air Services flight around 9 p.m. The suspect was not at the residence and police began to search the surrounding area, eventually finding the man around noon June 10. Matthew Cutlip of Tadoule Lake was

arrested and transported to Thompson. He is charged with pointing a firearm, careless use of a firearm, using a firearm in the commission of an offence, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and unauthorized possession of a firearm. RCMP are still investigating.

Thompson RCMP constable charged with assault for September 2018 altercation A Thompson RCMP officer who punched a man in September 2018 has been charged with one count of assault after an investigation by Manitoba’s police watchdog. Following a probe by the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IU), civilian director Zane Tessler determined there are reasonable and probable grounds to believe a criminal offence occurred. Const. Greg

Oke was charged with assault and is scheduled to appear in Thompson provincial court Aug. 9. The incident occurred last Sept. 12, when two Thompson RCMP officers responded to a call about an intoxicated female and became involved in an altercation with a male bystander. One of the officers punched the man several times in the face, the IIU said in a news release at the time.

Surveillance video of the incident was brought to the attention of the RCMP, which notified the IIU and passed along the video evidence. Tessler decided it was in the public interest to investigate, although the man did not suffer any serious injuries. The IIU investigates incidents involving on- or off-duty police in Manitoba.

Water damage shuts down three of four operating rooms, cancels elective surgeries at Thompson General hospital for ‘a number of months,’ says NRHA Three out of four operating rooms at the Thompson General Hospital have been knocked out of commission for months as a result of water damage from a

faulty rooftop air conditioning unit. The damage was discovered June 1, said the Northern Regional Health Authority in a June 11

press release, and elective surgeries and procedures at the hospital have been cancelled as a result. Emergency surgeries and emergency C-sections will

continue to be performed in Thompson. The health authority is working on contingency plans to have scheduled elective surgeries and pro-

cedures go ahead at alternate sites. Cleanup has begun but reconstruction is expected to take “a number of months,” the NRHA says. Patients who had been

scheduled to have elective surgeries and procedures done at Thompson General Hospital have been or will soon be contacted, the press release says.

Council approves $44K contract for Tree Suns to shred discarded mattresses BY KYLE DARBYSON

KYLE@THOMPSONCITIZEN.NET

The City of Thompson collected 329 mattresses at their waste disposal grounds between January and April of this year. During c o u n c i l ’s June 10 meeting, public works director Neil MacLaine recommended that the city pay Tree Suns $44,000 to shred this current stockpile of mattresses as opposed to burying them whole or shipping them to a company in Winnipeg for processing. Council ultimately approved this resolution by a 6−2 vote, although Coun. Andre Proulx wasn’t present to have a say. Coun. Jeff Fountain said he supported this move wholeheartedly, since the shredding process allows for the separation of metal coils and springs from the fabric that will give the landfill’s equipment a lot less problems. “I think the damage that those [metal materials] were doing to the equipment was probably as high or close to the price that we’ll pay

for shredding,” he said. “This isn’t the first go at shredding. I think this might be the third and it’s gone well. The alternatives are much more expensive and much more problematic.” Coun. Brian Lundmark also approved this resolution on the grounds that this shredding process will have less impact on the lifespan of the waste disposal grounds. H o w e v e r, Coun. Duncan Wong voted against this resolution, believing that it costs significantly less to ship these mattresses down south. In his estimation, the current stockpile of mattresses could be transported to Winnipeg in three loads for around $10,000. The city currently charges a $20 processing fee for any resident who brings their mattress to the waste disposal site, which is currently open 8 a.m. to 5p.m. from Monday to Friday (and 8 a.m. to 4p.m. on Saturdays). Council also approved the purchase of two new garbage and recycling trucks for a grand total of $642,708. MacLaine

Council approved a resolution June 10 to have Tree Suns shred these, and many other, mattresses instead of burying them whole or sending them down south for processing. said the city’s current fleet was due for a replacement, since they acquired their residential garbage truck and recyc-

ling truck in 2009 and 2010, respectively. The next Thompson council meeting is June 24 at 7 p.m.

Special Olympics athletes plant their flag Local athletes and coaches helped kick off Special Olympics Awareness Week in Thompson June 10 with a flag-raising ceremony at City Hall. Following this event, Mayor Colleen Smook made this week official with a proclamation at the very start of Monday’s Thompson city council meeting. She also took the time to congratulate the athletes who gathered inside council chambers, many of whom participated in Special Olympics Manitoba’s provincial winter games in Winnipeg earlier this year. This group included athletes like Flora Francois and William Hart, who will be competing as members of Team Manitoba in Canada’s 2020 Special
