Frontiers North Adventures now sole owner of Churchill’s Tundra Inn

Churchill’s Tundra Inn is now owned entirely by Frontiers North Adventures after the previous coowners transferred their 50 per cent stake in the business to their partner June 15. Frontiers North had coowned the Tundra Inn, which includes a hotel, hostel and pub, in partnership with Belinda and Parker Fitzpatrick since 2009. “Parker and I would like

to thank our amazing staff (past and present), our suppliers and, most importantly, all of our guests,” said Belinda Fitzpatrick in a blog post announcing the sale on the Frontiers North Adventures website. “Thank you for choosing the Tundra Inn!” Fitzpatrick will be resigning as the Tundra Inn’s general manager but will remain employed seasonally as the restaurant manager with Yves Pager continuing

as head chef. “The Tundra Inn wouldn’t be what it is today without the hard work and love that Belinda and Parker have poured into this place, and for that we are very thankful,” said Frontiers North president and CEO John Gunter. “We are excited for the challenge and opportunity to continue to serve the community and to elevate the hospitality experience for our guests in Churchill.”

Four-year-old drowns in Shamattawa A four-year-old boy who began struggling and went underwater while swimming with other children in Gods River in Shamattawa June 12 was found dead two days later in a net set up to ensure he would not be swept away by the current. Shamattawa RCMP and community members arrived on scene immediately after the child going underwater was reported, conducting in-water, boat and shore searches while nets were set up, continuing to search into the night. Boat searches continued the next day and Manitoba Sustainable Development arrived in a helicopter to assist the search. On June 14, the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team arrived in the community and the child’s body was found when community members checked the nets while searches and dives were ongoing. Police said no foul play is suspected.

High Schools Athletic Association, this scholarship is being given to 16 high school students across the province who have “maintained a minimum 75 per cent average and demonstrated exceptional leadership in high school sport, school and community involvement.” Throughout her high school career, Johnson’s sport of choice was soccer, where she gradually shifted into a leadership role over time, even being named one of RDPC’s athletes of the month back in October. In fact, this year she helped the senior girls’ soccer team break Flin Flon’s almost decade long death grip on the regional zones tournament title, all while maintaining a 91 per cent average in her classes. “I like to stay on top of

things, so I don’t find it that hard,” she said. “If you’re really passionate about the sport you’ll make the commitment to the school work too.” Johnson was nominated for this award by RDPC phys-ed teacher and coach Jeff Paradis, who said she represents everything he looks for in a quality leader. “At the end of the day, whether our teams are winning or losing, I want my athletes to always show good sportsmanship, to play hard until the end of the game and love the game,” Paradis wrote in an email to the Nickel Belt News. “Brittany does all of that, and that’s why I was proud to nominate her.” During a June 14 conversation with the Nickel Belt News, Johnson didn’t hesitate when asked what

she was going to do with the $1,000, revealing that the money is going straight to her post-secondary education. “I’m going to Brandon University for the nursing program,” she said. “I’m just excited to be graduated and … I think it will be fun. My sister goes to Brandon, so I don’t think it will be that hard to transition over there.” Moving forward, Johnson isn’t sure if she’s going to continue playing soccer at the post-secondary level. But right now, she’s choosing to focus her energy on more immediate matters, like writing exams, finding a summer job and attending her upcoming RDPC graduation ceremony, which is taking place June 27 at the C.A. Nesbitt Arena.

Nickel Days 2018 was offi cially declared open June 20 at the President’s Reception at the Thompson Regional Community Centre where Ted Kirkey and Danny Douglas were announced as this year’s Honorary Driller and Honorary King Miner. Kirkey started at the T-3 mine in 1975 and worked there until 1978, then quit before returning in 1981 and working until his retirement in 2010. Douglas started with Inco in 1980 and also worked elsewhere for a while before returning and working until his retirement in 2013. He started working in the smelter and refinery before transferring underground where he worked on the development of a currently inactive Thompson mine. “They drove ramps down Birchtree,” said United Steelworkers Local 6166 president Warren Luky. “Danny and Ted worked together. I’m proud to present Danny and Ted who are true northern miners.” Luky also looked ahead to this year’s National King Miner contest, which kicks off on Saturday. “The competitors are warming up for what’s sure to be a great competition,” he said. “I don’t think there’s any other event in the country that showcases mining like the King Miner contest so I think that’s something we need to be proud of and recognize. Vale’s donated a lot of time a lot of equipment, a lot of time and a lot of material to make this event happen and I’d like to thank them on behalf of United Steelworkers.” Also speaking at the reception was former board member Mayor Dennis

Nickel Belt News photos by Kyle Darbyson Barb Carlson helps Juniper School students from kindergarten to Grade 4 release a kaleidoscope of butterflies at the Boreal Discovery Centre on the morning of June 19. BY KYLE DARBYSON

KYLE@THOMPSONCITIZEN.NET

Students from Juniper and École Riverside schools gathered together at the Boreal Discovery

Centre June 19 to release a kaleidoscope of painted lady butterflies into the wild. Boreal Discovery Centre board member Barb Carl-

son says the students were supplied these insects in larval form two-and-a-half weeks ago and were tasked with caring for them until they eventually reached

the final stage of their life cycle. “It’s part of their curriculum,” said Carlson. “It helps them with their hands-on learning, rather

than just looking at it in a textbook. They actually see that butterfly go through those stages.” This program has been a joint effort between the

Boreal Discovery Centre and School District of Mystery Lake for the last five years, and aims to emphasize a “land-based” approach to education.

Pop can tab collection program aims to purchase a wheelchair for school district use BY IAN GRAHAM

EDITOR@THOMPSONCITIZEN.NET

Juniper School is serving as the headquarters for a program that is setting out to collect enough aluminum beverage can tabs to purchase a transport wheelchair for School District of Mystery Lake (SDML) students with injuries who need help getting around at school. The goal is to collect 1,700 pounds of the tabs by next May to purchase a $1,000 wheelchair via the tabs for wheelchairs program, says Juniper School resource teacher Audrey

McLellan. That’s a total of 2,550,000 tabs. “A student in our school broke her leg and we didn’t have a wheelchair so we had to borrow one from the someone from the community,” says Grade 7 student Debby Olubowe, who is a member of the tabs for wheelchairs committee along with McLellan, Juniper School principal Lucy Mayor, SDML student services administrator Jolene Brown and Thompson Recycling Centre manager Billie Jo Thompson. “We realized we didn’t have any for

school district so that’s why we’re collecting tabs.” “Not too long after that a second girl broke her leg and needed a chair,” McLellan says. “She ended up borrowing one from us and it’s kind of a makeshift chair. It’s one of those computer trolleys … and then a small chair has been welded into it.” Mayor has been collecting tabs at the school for a few years and having them taken to a school in Winnipeg to donate to their tabs for wheelchairs programs. “Then we found out could that we could do our own campaign so that’s when we decided to give it a try and see how it would go,” said McLellan, who said she knows of two other tabs for wheelchairs programs in Manitoba. “Ours is now the third.” The cooperation and support of the recycling centre is essential to the program, since the facility can store the tabs for the school until they have the necessary amount – more than three bales of 500 pounds each – and also because they have found a buyer for the tabs and can transport them down south. “That helps to support our shipping costs because we put our stuff in with the bales that are going to Winnipeg with the Thompson Recycling Centre,” McLellan said. The wheelchair the program is intended to purchase was selected in consultation with the Rehabilitation Centre for Children and an oc-
