National Indigenous Peoples Day marked with flagraisings at Thompson City Hall and RCMP detachment
The National Indigenous Peoples Day flag flies at Thompson City Hall June 21. BY IAN GRAHAM
EDITOR@THOMPSONCITIZEN.NET
Flags were raised at Thompson City Hall and the RCMP detachment on National Indigenous Peoples Day June 21 as symbols of organizations working towards a future of partnerships and respect between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. The raising of the Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO) flag at the Thompson RCMP detachment marked the first time that an Indigenous flag has been raised there. “We’re very honoured to be provided with the flag today to raise in front of our detachment,” said Manitoba north district commander Supt. Kevin Lewis, prior to raising the flag with O-Pipon-Na-Piwin Cree Nation chief and MKO vice-chief Shirley Ducharme following a drum perfromance. “it’s very important that we maintain communication with the communities we serve and provide the best possible policing service we can.” Ducharme said that Indigenous people have long had conflicts with and suffered mistreatment at the hands of police and government but that she hopes future generations of Indigenous people don’t encounter the same prejudices that hers and others have. “Despite the many difficulties First Nations have encountered in
our relationship with the RCMP, we are focused on building a stronger relationship with the RCMP in MKO territory,” she said. “I hope this will provide a strong signal to the Indigenous community in Northern Manitoba that the RCMP are open to working with us in a supportive way.” The flag-raising was the first of two Ducharme participated in on Sunday, with the second coming at City Hall, where the National Indigenous Peoples Day flag was run up the flagpole for the second straight year. “For Indigenous people, seeing the flag raised helps up feel proud of our identity,” Ducharme said. “Our people have been on this land since time immemorial. It’s important that our contributions are recognized. This event is a positive step towards reconciliation. This is a stepping stone for building more awareness of indigenous cultures in Thompson. I want to encourage everyone to keep working together in a good way, not just today but every day.” That theme of unity was echoed by Thompson Mayor Colleen Smook and Hilda Anderson-Pyrz of MKO during a ceremony that also included singing, drumming and a dance performance. “It’s with great honour that we’re going to fly this flag, last year being the first time it was done,” said Smook.

A dancer performs after the raising of the National Indigenous Peoples Day flag at Thompson City Hall June 21. “It’s just as special to see that it’s a tradition now, that it’s going to continue and it’s going to bring us together. We have so much farther to go. We’ve just started so we’ve definitely got to keep up the dialogue, keep up the peace.” Anderson-Pyrz said positive relationships like that between MKO and the City of Thompson are the way forward to a more equitable future for everybody. “The path forward is inclusive of all of us going forward together and carrying each other, lifting each other up,” she said.

Hydro layoffs, unclear border travel rules and reduced demand for commercial fishers’ harvest impacting Northern Manitoba Over the course of this pandemic, public servants have been at the frontline providing the essential services that Manitoban families depend on during these difficult times. Despite the great work these folks have done for our province, the government

has continued to impose wage freezes, layoffs and caps on these hard-working people. However, last week’s verdict on Bill 28: The Public Service Sustainability Act validated, what most have already known, the government’s legislation on wage freezes is unconstitutional and a violation of Charter rights. It is time for the Pallister government to show respect for working people in this province. The recent government-ordered layoffs at Manitoba Hydro will hurt many working families and may have a negative impacts on our northern communities. The services provided by Hydro are already stretched thin in the North, and the additional cuts to the workforce will only serve to further diminish the quality of our services. Like all Manitobans, we are greatly concerned about these cuts and the government’s continuous interference into the operation of Crown corporations. Once again we see the

true disdain this premier has for the hard-working Hydro crews. It seems he has forgotten last fall’s storm and power outages already. As the labour critic, I will continue to urge this government to change course and avoid making more unwarranted cuts to the public sector and Crown services. The government claims the cuts they have made have had no impact on people’s access to services but I hear a very different story from residents in the North who have been impacted by the lack of workers in various departments. The Public Health Orders given by the province on border crossings and northern travel
have been largely unclear. Residing in border communities leaves people heavily reliant on cross-border travel to access the services and goods they require. Restrictions were put in place to help reduce the spread of the virus, but the lack of clarity and information provided by this government on travelling between Flin Flon, Creighton and Denare Beach has created confusion. The rules have been ambiguous at times due to various exempted activities but other restricted activities. Enquiries into these issues has been a frustrating exercise for me and for citizens when the answers were at times just as ambiguous. Police seize gun and cocaine during Norway House residence search RCMP officers executed a search warrant at a residence in Norway House June 19, seizing a small amount of cocaine, a firearm, cash and drug-related paraphernalia. Two 15-year-old males and a 16-year-old male were arrested and remain in police custody. RCMP are also searching for a 49-year-old female in relation to this seizure. Charges that the four suspects face include possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. The search warrant was executed by officers from the Norway House and Thompson detachments, alongside the Crime Reduction Enforcement Support Team, Police Dog Services
and the Emergency Response Team. “To effectively and safely execute this search warrant, specialized units such as the Emergency Response Team were used to minimize the risk to the police officers, the public and the suspects,” said Manitoba RCMP north district commander Supt.Kevin Lewis. “The result of this investigation is one less illegal firearm on the street and the disruption of a drug trafficking operation. Another great example of the commitment of our officers to remove illicit drugs and illegal guns from the communities we serve in Northern Manitoba.” Norway House RCMP continue to investigate.

The officers managed to control the male and handcuff him. The prisoner was not injured during the altercation, police say. The officer who was struck and bitten was treated at the local nursing
station and released.
