Girls run to family member’s house after being followed by a man in a van while walking home from Norplex Pool Thompson RCMP responded to a call about a suspicious man in a dark van following two girls in the Burntwood area Oct. 29. Police received a report around 8 p.m. and were informed that the man had been following the girls as they walked home from the Norplex Pool around 7 p.m. The girls ran to the home of a family member who lived nearby and called police. RCMP officers spoke to both the girls,
who told them the man who followed them had a full beard that was a mixture of white and dark whiskers, as well as short white hair and was wearing a baseball cap. The van he was driving was described as a newer model Dodge. Police patrolled the area but did not locate either the vehicle or the driver and will continue to investigate if further leads come forward.
More than 20 marijuana-related charges laid in Manitoba in first week since recreational use was legalized in Canada A Winnipegosis man faces four Cannabis Act charges after police found an illegal marijuana grow op in his residence Oct. 19. RCMP photo
A Winnipegosis man was charged under the Cannabis Act for illegally growing cannabis plants within two days of recreational marijuana use becoming legal in Canada. Winnipegosis and Dauphin RCMP seized 94 cannabis plants when they executed a search warrant at a residence on Bridge Street in Winnipegosis Oct. 19. Ronald Allan Sobotkiewicz is charged with possession of illicit cannabis,
possession of cannabis for the purpose of distributing, possessing cannabis for the purpose of selling, and growing, propagating or harvesting a cannabis plant from a seed or plant material that is illicit cannabis. In the first week after recreational marijuana use became legal in Canada Oct. 17, Manitoba RCMP have also laid 12 charges of unlawful transport of cannabis in a vehicle, two charges for consumption of cannabis in a vehicle, one charge for consumption of cannabis by a young person, three charges of possessing illicit cannabis, including one against a 16-year-old alleged to have been selling marijuana at school, and one charge of drug impairment. Marijuana cannot be
grown at home in Manitoba under provincial law and can only be purchased from approved distributors under the Manitoba Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Control Act. When transporting marijuana in a vehicle, it must either be secured outside the passenger compartment, such as in the trunk of a car, or under the seat furthest away from the driver in a van or SUV.

Morning Sickness Don’t use cannabis to treat symptoms of morning sickness. There are better, safer ways to deal with it. Talk to your health care provider and find out what option is best for you. Breastfeeding The THC in cannabis passes into breast milk and can enter into your baby’s brain and fat cells. Mothers’ cannabis use has been associated with a range of impacts on their babies, including sleep disturbance and poorer school performance later on.

Vale’s Voisey’s Bay operation in Newfoundland and Labrador has an innovative Black Bear Management Strategy to reduce the dangers of working in bear country and limit the operational impact on the species, recognizing their cultural importance to local Indigenous people. Changes to food waste storage and removal, the installation of bear-resistant door handles, and unique climb-resistant hydro pole liners have reduced bear visits to the site. All new workers undergo training to report sightings and better prepare for bear encounters. Deterrents like noise makers and rubber bullets are now less frequent. Occasionally, more persistent bears are trapped and relocated in consultation with government and Indigenous stakeholders. Lethal force is now rarely used, but on such occasions the meat and hides are prepared for the local community in Nain.
Real-Time Water Quality Monitoring in Newfoundland & Labrador 2014 Finalist
Vale’s Voisey’s Bay Mine in Newfoundland & Labrador partnered with the provincial government to build a water quality monitoring program that is now an industry best-practice. Four solar-powered satellite-linked stations upload data online to the public every 4 hours, providing near real-time information on water quality in streams within the vicinity of the mine and mill. This information informs regulation development and site-specific risk assessments, and enhances the local community’s traditional knowledge by providing flow measurements and water temperature data to help predict the migration patterns of Arctic Char. With data available since the beginning of mining operations in 2004, Vale and the provincial government can conduct thorough reviews of the operation’s impact on local waterways.
Vale is a proud Towards Sustainable Mining leader. Recognizing overall excellence at our Voisey’s Bay Mine in Northern Labrador, Vale achieved an externally verified level A rating across the board - Indigenous and community outreach, crisis management, safety and health, tailings management, biodiversity conservation management, and energy use and greenhouse gas emissions management. Voisey’s Bay Mine’s commitment to sustainable mining raises the bar across the entire industry and demonstrates excellence in collaboration with government, Indigenous and local communities and employees.
Supporting Diversification of the Thompson, Manitoba Economy 2015 Winner
When Vale announced the future closure of its smelter in Thompson, Manitoba in 2010, we recognized its impact on the local economy. A full five years in advance, we engaged and funded a multi-stakeholder working group to collaborate in bolstering and diversifying the local economy. The Thompson Economic Diversification Working Group (TEDWG) included representatives from local Indigenous councils, city and provincial governments, and the local Chamber of Commerce. Armed with several economic action plans and regulatory framework, the goal was to spur education and retraining, regional identity and tourism, economic development and infrastructure. With over 20,000 hours of engagement and over $2 million, TEDWG has become a model for positive socio-economic change in communities affected by mining closures, a natural part of the mining life cycle.
After more than a century of mining activities in Sudbury, significant biodiversity initiatives are returning historically stressed lands and waterways back to their natural states. We grow more than 300,000 trees annually in our greenhouse for planting throughout the City of Greater Sudbury, and our annual aerial seeding program has restored 8,600 acres of land within the community since 1990. Our slag pile at Copper Cliff has been reborn as a biodiverse wildflower habitat, where we provide Milkweed for migrating Monarch butterflies, and raise hundreds of thousands of bees to promote pollination. We have also raised and released more than 100,000 fish to date into local waterways through a comprehensive fish-stocking program.
Maintaining Winter Transit Routes in Northern Labrador 2017 Winner
In winter months, the local Indigenous communities near Voisey's Bay depend on land-fast sea ice in Anaktalak Bay to hunt, fish and travel between communities. To reduce the disruption and breaking up of ice caused by our ships transporting nickel concentrate, we partnered with the local Indigenous community to develop a series of pontoon bridges to allow local residents to cross the ship’s track at key locations along the 40 km route. Consultation efforts to identify optimum bridge locations, route markings and communication, as well as agreed shipping closure periods, were established well before our operations began, ensuring minimal interference with traditional Indigenous lifestyles.
Sudbury Alerts 2018 Finalist
The City of Greater Sudbury has grown up around our facilities, and the safety of our community is our primary concern. In early 2017, Vale funded and launched Sudbury Alerts – a mass public notification service that enables Vale and the City to instantly send safety messages to the public, regardless of whether the emergency is associated with Vale’s operations. Vale worked closely with Greater Sudbury’s emergency services, utilities and health unit, as well as another local mining company, Glencore, to develop and implement Sudbury Alerts. It is fully integrated into the local 911 command centre and communications network, greatly improving the region’s emergency preparedness. The benefits were felt almost at once. In November 2017 a gas leak occurred at a local shopping mall. The building was quickly evacuated and residents across the city were instructed to stay out of the affected area.
Waste Management SLAM Dunk in Manitoba 2018 Finalist
The Manitoba SLAM Dunk Program aims to divert 100% of waste from local landfills, by segregating waste at the source into 13 streams using color-coded on-site containers. We are fundamentally changing waste management by making the sorting process the responsibility of everyone on Vale property. Empowering each and every employee, we all reduce, resuse and recycle. And we eliminate the need to sort materials after collection, making waste management more efficient and cost-effective. This program saw 50% of our waste diverted from landfill in the first year, climbing to 76% waste diversion after five years. Best practices from the program have been shared with the Thompson community, where local schools and youth programs are improving or implementing their own waste management systems.

sheet for at least 18 years, with the possibility of an extension for up to a total of 30 years. This amounts to an increase of up to 215 megawatts of electricity exports beginning in 2022, helping to displace fossil fuel power generation. It could lead to yearly emission reductions of the equivalent of about three megatonnes of carbon dioxide. We congratulate Manitoba Hydro and SaskPower and look forward to an official agreement to increase the flow of energy between these provinces. Minister Mayer also noted that Manitoba is continuing to attempt to engage the federal government to support further east-west transmission possibilities. Our province’s production of clean hydroelectricity can play a larger role in lowering emissions in Canada, and can help to reduce the nation’s carbon footprint.
