Thompson students Gazi Rahman and Zeenal Patel met up with around 150 other ambitious high school students in Ottawa Sept. 23−29 to participate in the Encounters with Canada program. Throughout this actionpacked week, the pair got to stay at the Terry Fox Canadian Youth Centre, tour the nation’s capital and explore potential career options in their chosen discipline. While Historica Canada, the group behind Encounters with Canada, organizes these events around a broad spectrum of themes like “Science & Technology” and “Global Affairs,” Rahman and Patel signed up for the week that dived into “Medicine & Health.” “It was like a conference,” said Rahman. “There was presentations, we went to places like the University of
Ottawa general campus for their hospital.” For Patel, these various tours, lectures and group activities exposed her to new possibilities in the area of medicine, since her main interest up until this point was mostly cardiology. “But going into this trip they focused more on the brain, more on neuroscientists and what they do to prevent diseases,” she said. “I have more options now. so many people. I can’t believe I have friends from everywhere.” Since these Grade 12 students are set to graduate in June 2019, this trip to Ottawa really helped strengthen their resolve to study medicine for their upcoming post-secondary careers. Patel told the Nickel Belt News that she’s already sent out applications to the University of Toronto and Waterloo to pursue a degree in biochemistry. Meanwhile, Rahman has set her sights set on becoming a family doctor or pediatrician, and would like to return to the site of this recent youth forum to start that journey. “I basically went on this trip just to see more detail about it,” she said. “I had no plan of going to the University of Ottawa, but after this trip I was like, ‘Maybe I want to go there.’”
