anticipated, with Friday’s group consisting of grieving families, sympathetic allies, city officials and members of the Thompson RCMP. This red ribbon campaign, also known as the Red Cloth Ribbon Awareness Campaign, has its roots in Manitoba, with the movement getting kicked off in December 2015 thanks to a small group of Opaskwayak Cree Nation women from The Pas. Throughout that same month, the idea quickly gained momentum, with similar events taking place in Winnipeg, Regina and, of course, Thompson. Montean said she decided to revive this campaign in the Hub of the North in 2018 to refresh the bridge with new ribbons and include some families who didn’t get the chance to honour their missing loved ones last time. “The issue of murdered and missing is not going away,” Montean wrote in a Facebook message to Nickel Belt News. “And we need to remind people of that.”

On Oct. 5, an awareness campaign to honour missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls reemerged in Thompson after a three-year gap. At around 5 p.m., a group of over 50 people walked down to the Miles Hart Bridge and tied red ribbons to the structure’s walkway railing as a way to remember those they’ve lost and to highlight the fact that many are still unaccounted for. “Almost every red ribbon and tie today represents a person,” said event facilitator Bobbi Montean. “There was a woman whose daughter was murdered and there was family here that are currently doing an active search for their missing mother.” This gathering at the Miles Hart Bridge is especially relevant today, since the structure overlooks the Burntwood River, which has been the site of a relentless search and recovery operation for resident Dianne Bignell, who was last seen in May. Montean and several

OBITUARY JANICE MARIE-THERESA FIEDLER July 17, 1962 – October 4, 2018 It is with great sadness that the family announce the sudden passing of Janice Fiedler of Thompson on Thursday, October 4 at the age of 56. Janice had a gentle soul. Her greatest love in life was her family. She is survived by her son Christopher (Heidi) and grandchildren Gracelyn, Michael and Andrew; daughter Amber (Dillon Downey); Mother Hilma Fiedler, Brother George Fiedler, Sister Claire Goodwin (Duncan), Best friend Diane Blais. Janice was predeceased by her father Leonard Fiedler. Janice spent countless, countless hours knitting and sewing for her grandkids and would have gone into overdrive to hear that her daughter was expecting. Janice had an entrepreneurial spirit selling Tupper ware, house cleaning, setting up craft tables for all her wares and she was known in town for her work as a seamstress. Janice loved to visit and would go out on a regular basis with her best friend Diane for coffee and they loved to meet new people. Growing up she was a real daddy’s girl and could always be found sitting on his knee She would go fishing and hunting with her dad whenever possible. Janice’s childhood was spent on Texada Island, BC and the ocean was her playground. She loved to collect rocks and shells. Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at the Roman Catholic church in Thompson. As per Janice’s wishes she was cremated and will have her ashes laid to rest in the ocean waters in Stewart, BC. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the Thompson Ambulance, and the Doctors and Nurses at the TGH for their deep compassion. Special thanks to their very close family friends Harald and Effie Stadlbauer, Sherry Bonnefoy, and Janice’s very best friend Diane Blais for being there in the time of need. Many thanks to all the friends that have been supportive and expressed their condolences. We can’t thank everyone enough. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Canadian Mental Health Association, 43 Fox Bay, Thompson, Manitoba, R8N 1E9, in Janice’s name. Adey Adeyemi How long have you been living in Thompson? I came into Thompson March 2015. What do you do for a living? I work as a purchasing agent for the City of Thompson. I’ve been working for the city for the past two years plus. Currently, I’m on a leave of absence because according to the Municipal Act any municipal employee that wants to run for office needs to go on a leave of absence by the last day of nominations. Why do you want to be on city council? It’s quite interesting because, like I said, when I gave up my job temporarily, and for four years if I win, that means that I’m not getting any income, any wages for that period. So I believe it’s a sacrifice I should pay to make my contributions to the city where I reside. What is the biggest local issue you want to address if you’re elected? I have a couple of things I want to do, but I think the main one is actually to look for alternative sources of income for the city. Everything revolves

around money … so based on what the city is going through, dwindling revenue from the government and from Vale, the grant-in-lieu, I believe that there are other sources of income that I could tap into. So that would be my number one goal. Why should someone vote for you over the other candidates? Number one, my training as an economist at the undergraduate level really prepared me for the job. Definitely my experience also [working] in the public sector will give me very, very good advantages of how things are run. I’ve also run in the private sector. In Winnipeg I worked in a very big company. So my training, my experience and my passion, I believe they will really help me stand out when compared to others. Anything else you want to add? I want my fellow Thompsonites to give me a chance because I’m really passionate about serving and I’m going into it because I have the mind to serve, I have the mind to see our city take a turn for the good.

Paul Beck How long have you been living in Thompson? I’ve been here for 23 years now. What do you do for a living? I’m a [in the hole] driller. I came from Leaf Rapids, which was a mining community that also closed down and I spent nine years there. Why do you want to be on city council? I think that we need some change here. I don’t think things are going the right way right now, so I think we need a bit of change up there. I think we have to do something about the vandalism and our taxes, our roads. What is the biggest local issue you want to address if you’re elected? I think we have to attack all the vandalism … we have to get kids off the streets and stuff like that. Do more for them. I would be [in favour of a curfew]. I know we had a lot of

things in the past, there was a lawyer brought in and everything, but I think we still have to look at a curfew because I don’t know if they run all the time and I know that they’re mostly bylaw, but the CSOs need to be running at night. I see them at 6-7:30 p.m. or whatever but I normally don’t see them past that. Between 11 p.m. and seven in the morning is probably the biggest time [for mischief]. Why should someone vote for you over the other candidates? I think they need change and I will speak for the community and do the best I can. I have to have four other people voting with me to get things done. I’ve been with the union for 32 years now, so I would say I’m hoping the union community will back me and I’ve been on various committees. I’m still on the safety committee, I’m on the contracting out committee and I’m the chairman for the National

Nickel Belt News photo by Kyle Darbyson King Miner [contest], which we do every year. Anything else you want to add? Everybody should vote and make their voices heard and make the right choices.

Chiew Chong How long have you been living in Thompson? I’ve been in Thompson for 43 years. I’ve been running the restaurant for over 24 years. I’ve gone through the ups and downs. I’ve gone through the prime and gone through the downturns. I remember years ago people getting $10,000 from the nickel bonus every three months. What do you for a living? I’m a heavy-duty industrial mechanic. Also I’m running a Chinese food take-out business. I’m a busy person. Why do you want to be on city council? I’ve been attending the council meetings for the past four years. I ask questions. Some of the questions I ask I didn’t get an answer but because I’m on the other side of the fence I won’t be able to get to the details they have in the … city administration. Some of the resolutions I might notice I don’t agree because they didn’t do a further study. Council should have discussed, found out the invoice, why it costs so

VS

much, why they have to pay, why this happened and all these things. By attending the council meeting I know lots of things down there are not really transparent. When you are there you know the whole story. When you’re not there reading in the newspaper or listening to the radio, the story might change, right, because the detail is not there. What is the biggest local issue you’d like to see addressed? To understand the finance – how money’s coming in, how the money’s spent. From there I will look at the public safety. We have a lot of influx of people coming here, they’re roaming around, there’s vandalism going on. Young people don’t have a lot of things to engage with after school. It keeps them occupied, they don’t have a chance to go out and roam around and destroy so many things through vandalism. Those are big issues. The other issue we have is our streets. I’m sad to drive around in Thompson here destroying my car, driving through a

Nickel Belt News photo by Ian Graham pothole not knowing because it’s covered in water. Anything else you want to add? I believe in working hard to achieve the things we want in our own life and if I’m elected you can be assured that I will take my beliefs and my credentials with me so I can serve this community to the best of my ability.

How to survive a winter emergency (NC) It’s always important to be prepared before hitting the road. Driving in the winter comes with a few more risks than other seasons ‚Äî the main ones being snow, ice and extremely cold temperatures. Having a properly maintained vehicle and being equipped to deal with a potential problem are the best ways to ensure you arrive at your destination safely. Darryl Croft, automotive expert at OK Tire, suggests a few things to have in your vehicle that can be helpful in a winter emergency: 1. Blankets, hats, gloves and socks. When waiting for a tow-truck or emergency vehicle in freezing temperatures, it’s important to stay warm. The best ways to do so are by keeping your head, hands and feet covered. 2. It’s always a good idea to keep a small amount of money stored in your glove box in case of emergency, even if it’s just $20. Sometimes places won’t accept credit cards or debit.

3. Granola bars. What’s worse than having your car break down? Dealing with it on an empty stomach. You never know how long it is going to take before help arrives. It will make the wait much easier if you have some snacks handy. 4. Booster cables. Always keep these in your trunk year-round, not just in the winter. They will be extremely helpful if your battery dies and you need a boost. OK Tire offers a complete battery check and

electrical system inspection to help prevent this from happening. 5. The last thing you want is to be stranded when it’s dark. Sure, cellphones have flashlights, but they are not the brightest and tend to kill your phone battery, which you’ll want to conserve. 6. Fluorescent flag. Should you end up stranded in darkness, a fluorescent flag will ensure your vehicle is visible to other drivers. If you need to walk

anywhere, the flag wrapped around your arm will make sure you can be seen. 7. First aid kit. If someone gets hurt while on the road, having a first aid kit handy can help deal with minor injuries. Always make sure your gas tank is at least half full at all times. This gives some leeway if you get lost and end up driving around aimlessly. Also, making the switch from all-season to winter tires is highly recommended.

It’s true that it’s never too early to get your car winter-ready.

Protect your vehicle from snow, ice and damage from the cold Drivers should take their vehicles for a tuneup and inspection before wintry weather arrives. A mechanic will examine the car battery and check antifreeze levels and make sure that the thermostat, defroster, brakes, and even wiper blades are working effectively. Have the tires inspected for adequate tread, which can make navigating roads safer. If the treads are worn, replace the tires. In addition to visiting their mechanics, drivers can perform some inspections and fixes themselves. • Check that all of the vehicle’s lights are operational so your car can be easily seen during inclement weather. Exchange your existing windshield washer fluid with one that will not freeze in cold conditions. Check the nozzles on the windshield-washer system routinely and clear out any blockages of ice or debris. While addressing windshield washer fluid, also replace worn out windshield wiper blades with ones that can withstand snow and icy weather. • A new coating of wax can serve as a shield against road salt, snow, sleet, and rain. Try a polymer wax to protect the paint. Whenever possible, rinse off salt and grime so it does not dry on the car and gradually wear away at the paint. Some drivers mistakenly believe that salt stops being a problem once it dries simply because moisture is the active ingredient for a corrosive reaction. But humidity in the air is enough to keep the salt eating away at the car’s paint, and that can contribute to rust. Be sure to rinse off the undercarriage of the vehicle as well. • Have your tires’ alignment checked toward the end of winter or early spring. A season of traveling over pothole-ridden roads or hitting curbs buried under snow drifts can affect the alignment. Get everything back on track. Similarly, inspect tires routinely, as weather changes can affect tire pressure and strength. • Use a soft snow brush or a foam brush to clear snow off of the car. Avoid hard plastic scrapers you might use on your windshield, as they can scratch painted surfaces.

Jeff Fountain How long have you been living in Thompson? I was born and raised her. I spent a short period of time in university and overseas in Japan. But most of the rest of my time has been here in Thompson. I’m guessing that’s 40 years or so. What do you do for a living? I’m an environment officer [for the province]. We do environmental law enforcement in the north. Things like waste disposal grounds, sewage treatment plants, emissions from the mine, water quality coming out of the mine and sewage treatment plants. Why do you want to be on city council? I think that I bring a certain vision to the table that most

people aren’t bringing. If you ask other people what their vision is for the city or what their top things are they’ll tell you that it’s crime and the usual stuff. We’ve had a number of organizations stress the importance of food security here and I believe the city signed a food charter. [But] you don’t see anything. I’ve spent the last seven years developing my own experimental farm just south of Thompson, trying to find out what works, sharing my conclusions and the results of the work that I have publicly, and so I want to implement some of this stuff or give people the freedom to explore on their own in the city. Of course, I’ve thought about the usual [subjects] of crime and vandalism and

homelessness and cleaning up council, fairness, transparency, but I have other bigger goals. What is the biggest local issue you want to address if you’re elected? I believe I’m the only person who said a firebreak is the absolute priority for the City of Thompson. Anyone who doesn’t see that as a priority is missing what’s going in other northern communities in Canada. It’s fine to deal with crime, it’s fine to deal with the optics downtown, they are important issues. But for me, of utmost importance is that we still have a community to clean up and having a firebreak to protect us from the north and the west is an absolute must for me.

Tim Gibson How long have you been living in Thompson? Three years. [I came from] Fort McMurray and before that Labrador City in Labrador. I guess three years in Thompson itself but almost 20 years in the Canadian north. What do you do for a living? Never had a public sector job until I came to Thompson. Always in industry, mining, industrial services, Komatsu Equipment, stuff like that. [Now] I’m the manager of Northern Workforce Development Centre. Basically, the Northern Workforce Development Centre is to provide industrial, employment based focus training through industry and the service industry. Why do you want to be on city council? I want to help. I’ve never run for city council, I never thought I would ever aspire to put my name forward. I’ve got a lot of experience, 30 years in the industry. I think we need jobs, lots of them. I think I can help make some of those things happen and work as team player for city council. What is the biggest local issue you want to address if you’re

Nickel Belt News photo by Kyle Darbyson elected? Jobs … if you were to ask me what is the most important thing, I think giving people that confidence to stay and remain locally and giving them a start … and then it’s a journey and help them on that journey. So I’m very fortunate and lucky that I have that ability to help people and I’m at that point in my career where it’s awful nice and fun to give back. Why should someone vote for you over the other candidates? I don’t have the rich history

that some of the other candidates have, but I think I’ve touched a lot of people positively. I’ve been on several boards, I’ve been active in ringette, I’m active for the Manitoba [Winter] Games, my wife did volunteer work for the Boreal Discovery Centre. So we’re out there in the community, we’re making a difference. I’ve got two young daughters that are going to go through high school at some point. I’d like to think that [the election] is a test to whether I’m impacting. Anything else you want to add? Don’t just check a box because my name is there. Hopefully, I’ve touched enough people that I’m worthy to get in there.

Why should someone vote for you over the other candidates? I’m not going to be a part of any block of voting on council. I refuse. I’m going to be a complete independent and think for myself and think for what’s best for Thompson. I have no political organizational or business ties here that would make it difficult for me to vote in the best interest of the actual community itself. I think that’s a big difference. Anything else you want to add? I’m very happy that I have the opportunity to serve the community. But if not elected I think one of the takeaways from me doing this campaign was that I’ve reached out to a number

Nickel Belt News photo courtesy of Jeff Fountain of candidates, other candidates, and I’m feeling very optimistic, because a lot of the people that are running,

all of them that I have met, are very passionate and want to see the city grow and change for the better.

Martin Grier How long have you been living in Thompson? Probably about 25 years. I was a contractor. I rebuilt three turbines in Grand Rapids, lived here, my wife lived here. I got a job in Snow Lake. I was there six months. In 2000 I got on with Inco. I spent 10 years in Churchill. I’m from High River, Alberta. What do you for a living? I graduated in 1994 as a millwright or industrial mechanic. I spent most of my career on oil rigs in Alberta. I drilled holes everywhere in Alberta. I was on my way to Greenland … and got stuck in Churchill and that’s where I stayed. It was great. I wish Ports Canada didn’t leave when OmniTrax took over. Why do you want to be on city council? I would like to be a part of trying to make our community a little safer place. I feel that I’m a very open person. My input could really help. I went to a lot of council meetings and I wanted to speak all the time. I feel the public should be involved on the resolutions because it is for the public. I believe we should have good honest people. What is the biggest local issues you want to address? Getting kids active where

Nickel Belt News photo by Ian Graham they’re not having trouble and have RCMP do more of a job. Why don’t we have a detention centre or a remand centre or even a prison up here where we can hold people make them do community service to pay off their fine … and teach them not to hang around on the street? Why can’t our fire department have our [police] dispatch there? I’d like to get our streets back. I don’t know what we can do with the teenagers but I think if we enforce our police to … start picking

them up, take their picture, ID, put wireless cameras all around downtown. We’re on a budget of $34 million a year. I think we could really bring that down. Why should someone pick you over one of the other candidates? I’ve had a very, very good life. I have a lot of knowledge to offer that other people don’t see from me because I’m a very private person. I’ve done a lot of things and I think I could … really help out, build our community too.

Judy Kolada How long have you been living in Thompson? I can here as a teenager in 1963. Fifty-five years. What do you do for a living? I’m retired. Why do you want to be on city council again? I was first elected in 1995 to a three-year term and thereafter it’s been four-year terms. So I’m completing my sixth term. I’m still interested in the well-being of the community, but I think that the last term, for instance, there are only two other people there who had any council experience and that was Mayor [Dennis] Fenske with one term as councillor and Coun. [Penny] Byer had one term as well. When you know the past history of an issue you can contribute and I felt that with my experience that that should be an asset to a council.

Nickel Belt News photo by Kyle Darbyson What is the biggest local position and they’re finished issue you want to address if at 11 o’clock at night when you’re re-elected? that’s when the youth are The financial issues are go- out doing their vandalism, ing to be first and foremost, I think there’s a number of but what’s very important to issues that we need to address me is addressing our crime to reduce our crime rate and rate, our downtown situation. our vandalism. If the region is I’m not opposed at all to the successful, so is the communCSOs, but when we hired ity. So that’s a priority with four people in that type of me as well. I guess financial,

public safety and economic development are the areas of my interest. Why should someone vote for you over the other candidates? I think experience would probably be the main reason, and the fact that I’ve been here for a long time and I’m familiar with Thompson. We’ve had upsurges and downsurges and I don’t think there’s anybody on that ballot that’s better-versed in the history of Thompson. Anything else you want to add? A very important issue this election is to elect people who will work together and not have little splinter groups. That’s something that I find doesn’t work to anybody’s advantage. I don’t know if it’s a good idea to even admit it, but I find that’s a real handicap.

Andre Proulx How long have you been living in Thompson? I’ve been here for just over 10 years now. Moved here in 2008. What do you do for a living? I’m a mechanic by trade and then I opened this business AMP Industries up going on four years now. I think my business skills would definitely be a positive to the city council just for, not only the money management but the plans for how to generate more revenue and out-of-the-box thinking. Why do you want to be on city council? I want to make some change and it’s hard to do it from the sidelines. I’ve always been interested in business and politics so it’s a good little entry for me. What is the biggest local issue you’d like to address? Communication needs to

be improved. That means bringing in more people like our surrounding communities, the First Nations ‌ obviously the business sector more and the public because we need input from the public. Nine people in my eyes can not change a city. We could help guide a city, we can make it easier but we need the people that live here to pitch in. What I want might not be what everyone else wants so I think it would be good to get more input. From there it stems to our downtown problem where we need to work with local First Nations and the federal and provincial governments to come up with a plan. The City of Thompson can not just fix downtown. It’s a Northern Manitoba problem not a Thompson problem. Why should someone vote for you over the other candidates? I’ve got a good relation-

Nickel Belt News photo by Ian Graham How long have you been living in Thompson? I have been living in Thompson for a little over eight years. I wanted to go to Legal Aid partly because ‌ I do see myself as the defender of the downtrodden, fighter for the underdog ‌ and so that’s where I wanted to put my time and energy. Legal Aid said, ‘Well, the only opening we have is in Thompson.’ What do you do for a living? I’m a criminal lawyer. I come with critical thinking and being able to look at things coldly, rationally, strategically as well as problem solving because obviously all my clients have a problem and it’s my job to try to come up with the best solution for them. Why do you want to be on city council? The fact that city services are being cut and property taxes are going up, there’s clearly things that we need to try to sort out. My ability to think rationally, problem-solve, not get emotional, I think those assist. I want this community to be able to thrive long-term and I think I can assist. What is the biggest local issue you want to address if elected?

Everybody’s really upset about the property taxes and infrastructure because all our streets are crumbling. I was only snow plowed, I think, once all of last year. The infrastructure, the rising taxes, the reducing services, those are the areas that I want us to be able to look at and try to do better on. Why should someone pick you over the other candidates? I go and do the research so that if I’m opening my mouth saying something, I’m going to be right because I care about facts and I care about accuracy. I think that’s what’s needed on city council. Anything else to add? I’ve been involved in the theatre group. I’ve been the chair of a non-profit for three years now here in town. I volunteer with the Boys & Girls Club giving them lessons on the legal system every course that the Youth Build runs. I speak at the high school every year in an English class about the youth criminal justice system. I swim at the pool. I’m in the volleyball league. I’ve been a member of the yoga studio. I have been committed to this community and I have been actively engaged in it.

I make decisions for the long term. I’m a hands-on councillor. I try to get
