The new cable ferry on the Nelson River serving Norway House and surrounding areas went into service Oct. 21. The 90-foot-long, 15car cable ferry, christened the C. F. Gilbert Laugher, in honour of one of the first ferry operators at the Sea Falls crossing, cost $3 million and took two years to construct. It was launched in the Red River at Selkirk in September 2016 and moved across Lake Winnipeg and then transported overland on Provincial Road 373 to the ferry crossing. It replaces the C.F. James Apetagon, which has been in service since 1977. “This is such a wonderful tribute to my dad,
who worked tirelessly for years providing a critical service to our community,” said Lyette Laugher, whose father was born in Norway House in 1928. “My dad would be so humbled and impressed with the new vessel.” The new cable ferry was named in consultation with the community of Norway House and Norway House Cree Nation. “The new cable ferry is the critical link joining the people of Norway House to all of Manitoba,” said Infrastructure Minister Ron Schuler, noting that the provincial government also recently resurfaced PR 373 between the Minago River and PR 374 at a cost of $5.5 million and that all 172
kilometres of the highway from Highway 6 to Norway House has now been resurfaced. “Our province is very pleased to recognize the commissioning of the C.F. Gilbert Laugher and congratulates the Laugher family on this important recognition. Investments like the new cable ferry, as well as the recently completed resurfacing of PR 373, are essential to the health and prosperity of Norway House and the surrounding area.” “The completion of resurfacing on PR 373 and the addition of the new ferry will not only ensure safe, reliable, year-round access to the people of Norway House but also to tourists who want to ex-
perience all the incredible experiences the north and our community have to offer,” said Norway House Mayor Cristo Speiss. “We acknowledge and express our sincere appreciation and thanks to the government of Manitoba for making these projects a reality in our region.” The cable ferry typically runs 24 hours a day from April 1 until Jan. 1, shutting down when the ice crossing opens and resuming service when it closes. “As a growing and vibrant community of over 8,000 residents, we are continuing to work hard on our community’s economic, infrastructure and recreational facilities,” said Norway House Cree Nation
Chief Ron Evans. “I would like to applaud the commitment of Premier Brian Pallister and his government for the work in assisting in the development of our community with the new ferry. This will help us as we continue our community and economic development, facilitating tourists and others to visit the north and our community.” “This is an important investment for the people of Norway House and the surrounding area that will provide reliable access for the community,” said Thompson MLA Kelly Bindle, who attended a celebration in Norway House to mark the official launch of the new ferry on behalf of the infrastructure minister.

Busy week in Northern Manitoba

I was joined by Manit o b a ’s M i n i s t e r o f Growth, Enterprise and Trade Blaine Pedersen, Minister of Indigenous and Northern Relations Eileen Clarke and Minister of Municipal Relations Jeff Wharton in Thompson last week to listen to issues affecting northerners. We met with many community groups before attending a Thompson Chamber of Commerce meeting at the Ma-Mow-We-Tak Friendship Centre on Thursday evening where Look North Strategy cochairs Chief Christian Sinclair of Opaskwayak
Cree Nation and Manitoba Chambers of Commerce president Chuck Davidson presented Minister Pedersen with the Look North Report and Action Plan for Manitoba’s Northern Economy. The action plan has evolved through input from northerners at summits held in Thompson, The Pas and Churchill last spring, and it provides our government, community groups and individuals with a framework for developing Northern Manitoba’s economic potential. The report focuses on enhancing northern mineral and other resource potential, Indigenous engagement and partnerships, infrastructure investment, housing opportunities, workforce development and other issues. We encourage northerners to review the report and to participate in the key initiatives identified. I’m pleased to have participated in the christening of the cable ferry,
C.F. Gilbert Laugher, which will serve Norway House and surrounding communities. The new ferry is named in honour of Gilbert Sandy Laugher, who was born in Norway House in 1928 and, after a long career as a ferry operator at the Sea Falls crossing, retired in 1993. Gilbert passed away in 2008, but his memory lives on and his community overwhelmingly recommended the new ferry be named after him. It was a nice ceremony at the crossing last weekend with Norway House Cree Nation elders, Chief Ron Evans, Mayor Cristo Spiess, councillors, community members and the family of Gilbert Laugher. Lyette and Shawna, Gilbert’s daughters, cut a ribbon to launch the ferry and shared stories about riding the old ferry with their father. Another highlight was elder Tommy Muswagon breaking a champagne bottle to christen the vessel and to bring luck to passengers.

It was great to see a large turnout and to listen to presenters, panellists and the board of directors regarding diabetes and other health concerns at the Northern Regional Health Authority’s health summit in Thompson this week. After a decade of decay in services under the previous Manitoba government, these discussions were important for finding out about patient experiences and ways to improve our health-care system. Health, Seniors and Active Living Minister Kelvin Goertzen has announced major increases to Manitoba’s health-care budget and is spearheading a combined procurement with other provincial health ministers to realize combined savings on major medical equipment purchases. Our government remains focused on improving patient outcomes and protecting front-line services and the workers who provide them.

After forcing his way into the Thompson Canadian Tire, 51-year-old Kyle Fitzner was caught by local police around 1 a.m. Oct. 20 and subsequently charged with breaking and entering. According to store owner Pieter Ciere, Fitzner entered the premises after closing time and attempted to break

into the warehouse office area after damaging three cash registers with a crow bar. In the wake of this incident Ciere said that they’ll have to upgrade the store’s security, since this is the first break-in they’ve had to deal with in the last four to five years. However, this is not Fitzner’s first brush with the law. A representative from the Thompson RCMP said the 51-yearold has three outstanding warrants for his arrest in The Pas: one for breaking and entering, one for theft under $5,000 and another for failing to comply with probation. All three outstanding warrants were executed and Fitzner will appear in court for those offences as well. Although nothing was stolen during the Oct. 20 incident, Ciere said that theft in general is getting worse in their store, claiming that they lose around $100 every day from shoplifters. “I’ve lost almost $448,000 in merchandise in the last two years that I’ve been here,” he said. “We seem to be a big target.” Anyone with information regarding crime in this area is asked to contact the Thompson RCMP at 204-677-6909.

With no permanent solution to Churchill’s lack of a surface transportation link in sight, a transport company featured on TV’s Ice Road Truckers is planning to blaze its own trail. Mark Kohaykewych, president of Polar Industries Ltd., announced Oct. 20 that his company is partnering with Churchill-based Remote Area Services and Fox Lake Cree Nation to create a short-term solution to transporting goods to Churchill by creating a route for a snowcat train from Gillam to the Hudson Bay port town. “We have been entertaining this option since the beginning of June, since the closure of the OmniTrax rail line,” said Kohaykewych at a press conference in Winnipeg Oct. 20. “Right from the very start we wanted to make sure that Churchill had a plan B coming up for winter.” The trip over a distance of about 300 kilometres would likely take about 30 hours to complete and the goal is to begin preparing the trail after Christmas and to begin taking light loads to Churchill by mid-January, Kohaykewych said. “We know there are going to be some challenges ahead of us,” he said. “This has not been done commercially before. The route that we intend to use starts just east of Gillam and we’ll be travelling north through various routing options which are going to be weather dependent. Depending on the levels of snow that we get and depending on the levels of frost penetration we get will dictate which route we decide to go.” The goal is to transport full loads of about 80,000 pounds by mid-February and to move about 200 full loads into Churchill but the partners are hoping for some government assistance. “This is privately funded within our three groups and I don’t want to use the word shoestring budget, I think that’s a little bit of a strong

With the demand that we have, I don’t think we’re going to be able to keep up without some type of assistance from them.” Fox Lake Cree Nation Chief Walter Spence said the project might create some short-term employment for members of the First Nation and that it would help out some members who live in Churchill as well as all the other residents of the community. “We have members and relatives in the community of Churchill so we want to support the community and [Churchill] Mayor [Michael] Spence’s efforts
to get the rail line fixed,” Spence said. “Some of our band members are very knowledgeable about the land.” Remi Foubert-Allen, who operates the company Remote Area Services in Churchill, says this initiative could help reduce the cost of food in his hometown, where four litres of milk currently costs more than $10 and a brick of cheese can be as much as $18. “The two biggest goals in terms of making this a reality, I think, is doing this as safe as possible,” he said. “That is number one and then second, we don’t want to leave any trace that we were there so that is the big thing. If you walk across the tundra, those footprints, they’re going to stay there for a number of years so it’s doing this with the right equipment and doing this as safely and environmentally friendly as
possible.” Kohaykewcyh said the idea was a throwback to the old ways of supplying remote communities. “This is a primitive form that was used in the ‘70s by many companies to transport goods to remote communities and we’re going to go back to that in pulling the cat trains and sleighs into Churchill.” Chuck Davidson, cochair of the Look North task force and president and CEO of the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce, which hosted the press conference, said he was glad to be supporting the partners’ idea for a temporary ground transportation option. “One of the great things I love about northerners is when they see problems and they see challenges, they always find solutions,” said Davidson, who is originally from Snow Lake.

2017 - A Year in Review Dear Residents and Visitors, On behalf of Council, I am pleased to report on the progress that we made in 2017, and share our City’s vision as the regional service center of northern Manitoba. Thompson 2020 As Councillors, we recognize that the future of mining is uncertain in Thompson, and the stakes of success in 2018 have never been higher. However, we’re working harder than ever to make new connections and foster new opportunities for northerners in Thompson and the greater region. Thompson 2020 has identified several leads for transitioning workers affected by Vale’s restructuring, and are continuing to seek more: we are committed to finding northern jobs and opportunities for northerners. We have made a key investment in hiring Keisha Davis, the City of Thompson’s new Economic Development Officer. Under the mentorship of the Thompson 2020 management team, Davis will continue to pursue long-term development projects in Thompson to ensure the work of Thompson 2020 continues well into the future. As we proceed with the project, we will be making a greater effort to seek input from the stakeholders that matter most, that is, yourself. We want to provide the opportunities you need to thrive, and we want to know what those opportunities are. Infrastructure Capital Projects For the sixth year in a row, we are proud to say that capital infrastructure projects have been entirely funded by grants and reserves instead of taxes. Progress in the restoration of Selkirk Drive has continued smoothly, and this year saw the incorporation of a 1.5m bike lane, complete with a 1m buffer zone: when taken with the completion of the Princeton Multi-use path, and some greatly needed sidewalk restoration near Quartz, it’s made for a great year in active transportation. Water Main Renewal on Beaver Crescent allowed us to identify and resolve several key issues in the area and cross a major renewal off of our list. While the restoration of Brandon Crescent has been deferred, the deferral has given us the opportunity to conduct further repairs to ensure the longeivity of water mains in the area. Sustainability This year marks the final year before the official transfer of the water treatment plant from Vale to the City of Thompson. The waiving of the Province of Manitoba’s land-transfer tax marks a significant achievement in this process., representing $1.5 million in taxpayer savings in waived fees. Construction of the Wastewater Treatment Plant also began this year, marking a $36 million investment in Thompson’s future from municipal, provincial, and federal levels. The plant will ensure that both our community and our environment are prepared for the future. 2018 Manitoba Winter Games Since early spring, the City of Thompson has been busy preparing ourselves to host the 2018 Manitoba Winter Games. Hosting the games provides us with a unique opportunity to showcase the best that our community has to offer, from our extensive facilities within the Thompson Regional Community Center and the University College of the North, to our vibrant winter wilderness at Mystery Mountain and our municipal trails. It has also given several participating venues the opportunity to benefit from legacy projects in many of our local facilities. Despite the challenges ahead of us, we remain optimistic that there is a bright future for Thompson and the North.

My stay at Friuli When I first arrived in Thompson last April I had no idea what I was getting into. Outside of a couple contacts at my new job, I didn’t know anybody in town and I was still reeling from a big lifestyle change, having lived in Ottawa for the last eight years of my life. Plus, I still had to tackle a number of arduous tasks, like apartment hunting, in this unfamiliar place, so finding a little local hospitality during this transitional period went a long way. Luckily, Friuli Suite Rentals provided just the kind of thing I was looking for. Thanks to their extended stay units, I was given the opportunity to spend my first couple days in Thompson inside a fully furnished apartment rather than a cramped hotel room. Not only was I able to make use of a living room, bedroom, kitchen, and laundry facilities, but I had access to amenities like cooking utensils and a DVD player, little things that really helped me relax during this uncertain time. It also didn’t hurt that these units are located a stone’s throw away from the local hospital, which put my
general anxieties about catching a “foreign” Manitoba ailment at ease. After talking to Friuli manager Carolyn CantrellTurpie, I found out that these units are designed to accommodate people in similar kinds of situations, whether they be government workers, new recruits for the RCMP, or construction contractors who are staying in the area for a short time before moving onto their next job. “It’s just because everything’s done for them and they have everything here they will need.” said CantrellTurpie. “They just unpack and shop for groceries. Everything is supplied right from the coffee, tea, sugar and salt & pepper, to toilet paper, paper towels, soap & shampoo.” Friuli founder Romano Bianchini established this “extended stay” concept back in 1999. After helping build a lot of houses and business structures in the city’s early years, Bianchini turned one of his apartment blocks into facilities that could accommodate people for a single week to several months or longer.

According to Cantrell-Turpie, this business model was basically unheard of in Thompson at the time and has since become massively influential throughout the last 18 years.

“The idea took off, obviously, because lots of people in town are doing it now, including some of the other apartment block owners who have turned whole blocks into extended stays.”
As for myself, I did eventually find a permanent apartment here in the Hub of the North and I’m doing my best to integrate into the local community. But Friuli really helped make my first step in that journey remarkably easy, and for that I will always be grateful.
Despite mounting competition from local hotels, who have also adopted this extended stay model, Friuli has still managed to differentiate itself from the rest of the pack through its reputation for cleanliness and personalized approach to accommodating its guests.

“We’ve managed to hold our little piece of the market and I think that’s through personal direct contact with our guests and doing whatever we can to make them happy, right down to if somebody wants a crock pot, for example,” said Cantrell-Turpie. In terms of more permanent accommodations, Friuli also offers apartments for rent on Centennial Drive, as well as warehouses and office buildings in the industrial district for those looking to kick-start their own enterprise. Of course, like other small business in Thompson during this time, the new owners of Friuli are concerned about the job loses at Vale and how it will affect the rest of the local economy. However, Cantrell-Turpie said that despite this uncertainty, Friuli’s extended stay suites are booked solid right up until the New Year, which is a testament to their customer base and reputation amongst the business community.

SOMETHING FISHY HAPPENED AT THE BOREAL DISCOVERY CENTRE THIS YEAR! We are excited to announce the installation of our sturgeon habitat at the Boreal Discovery Centre. This five-tank integrated system features the habitats preferred by fingerlings, juveniles and sub-adults. Live plants, tadpoles, aquatic bugs and crustaceans are among the discoveries you may make when you visit the sturgeon habitat. Also in 2017, we held several gardening workshops, conducted school tours, and held our summer Discovery Camps. We participated in AuroraFest during which time we hosted two visitors the wolves named Aurora and Timber. Later this season, we plan on being open weekends and will host work-shops and programming to help connect people to the boreal forest. November is Sturgeon and Friends Month. A hairdresser’s journey: the Salon Aurora story After 30 years of working in the hair care industry, Salon Aurora owner Michele Lothier is settling into the next stage of her career at The Plaza Mall. With this new change in location, Lothier said the transition has worked out in their favour. Not only does Salon Aurora get more foot traffic in their spot right next to Western Financial Group, but this placement also provides a level of privacy that you wouldn’t normally associate with a mall hair salon. “It’s nice here because it’s not like I’m ‘in the mall.’ I can see outside and it’s not like the door is wide open,” said Lothier. “So it’s nice because it’s a little more private.” Of course, this isn’t the first time that Lothier has had to adapt to new surroundings. Before arriving in Thompson for the first time in 2004, she attended university in Sydney, Nova Scotia and quickly discovered that she didn’t want to pursue her Bachelor of Science degree. “But I really enjoyed the chemistry and biology part of that course,” said Lothier. “So I ended up applying at a vocational school and got accepted, then quickly realized that you need to know a lot of biology and chemistry to do hair colour. So I got my chemistry geek fix by doing that.” This educational detour ended
up paying dividends in the long run, since hair colouring is one of Salon Aurora’s most popular services in 2017. “Hair colouring is my favourite thing to do,” said Lothier. “If you want to just change your hair colour because you’re bored and you want something bright … everybody wants to look and feel younger.” After Lothier graduated from Cape Breton Regional Vocational School, she started her career working in Sydney for the next couple years. Lothier eventually moved to Halifax, where she continued down this career path for the next 15 years. She even got involved with Redken hair products as an educator during this time. “I taught product knowledge classes and worked pretty much every major hair show that was in Halifax up until I moved here in 2004,” she said. Today, Salon Aurora remains Thompson’s only source for Redken products, not only retail but their professional colour products and hair repair products are Redken as well. Redken is a company that was founded on Science and Chemistry first, so it was a natural fit from the beginning. While Lothier said that business has been steady since their move last July, she maintains that the current economic climate in Thompson is worthy of

concern. However, the veteran hairdresser also mentioned that this industry is somewhat immune to these periods of uncertainty, since people are always looking to escape the real world through a couple hours of pampering. “In an economic downturn people still want to feel good about themselves,” she said. “Instead of going on a hot holiday or spending a ton of money and going on a big trip they’ll come and get a service done that
makes them feel better about themselves.” With fellow hair stylist Shannon Chaput at her side, who has around 20 years of experience under her belt, Lothier will definitely keep local Thompsonites up to date on all the hot new styles at Salon Aurora, even as we transition into the frigid cold of winter. WINTER HOURS: 9:00 AM - 9:00 PM The Thompson Auto Wash, which opened in 2004, has reinvented itself over the past two years. With the addition of a convenience store and detailing bay, this local business has now fulƤlled its original vision. We talked to owner Rajinder Thethy about what went into expanding the business into its current state. “It’s taken thirteen years to get to this stage,” said Thethy, who founded the car wash with his two business partners in 2004. By 2012, Thethy bought them out to become the sole proprietor. It took a few more years before he was able to dedicate himself to the business full-time, being that he still had a full-time job. However, since parting ways with his previous employer in 2015, Thethy has dedicated more of his time and energy to Thompson Auto Wash. He comments, “We Ƥnally believe that from the incomplete structure it was, we now have the complete version of the business we anticipated.” Thompson Auto Wash has made substantial investments in the past two years. The most recent development being the asphalting of the

driveway and parking lot. “Paving the parking lot completes the expansion we had planned” said Thethy. “The asphalted parking lot lifts the appearance of the store and makes it much cleaner because dirt and gravel is not being dragged in.” Thompson Auto Wash’s expansion began in 2015 when the old car wash system was removed and replaced with a WashWorld Razor touchless system. This new system automatically adjusts to diơerent-sized cars and attacks the dirt coating them. This is done by delivering soap and water from a distance of about 10 to 12 inches from the vehicle. In addition to a better wash, the new system reduces the amount of time and water needed to wash a vehicle. This has
helped the Thompson Auto Wash reduce the length of their line-ups and so its customers can look forward to spending less time waiting for their wash. For those who want to restore their vehicle to its best possible condition, Thompson Auto Wash’s new indoor detailing bay is good news. “We take your car for about four to Ƥve hours and we clean it inside and out. When asked about the addition of
the convenience store, Thethy told us “The whole idea was to diversify so we could still keep staơ for the winter months.” The store is open 12 hours a day during the winter, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and carries a wide range of products including (but not limited to) candy, jerkies, chips, pop, slushies—made with real fruit juice and the traditional Slush Puppy version—and popcorn. “Our popcorn is a big seller because it’s always fresh,” said Thethy, adding that if there is something that customers would like to see in the store
they can let him know. “We’re always open to suggestions as to what products to bring in just to make life a bit easier for our customers.” With Christmas coming up, Thompson Auto Wash has a few suggestions for the car owners on your gift list. “We oơer VIP wash cards, which is a card that can be pre-loaded with ten washes or more for a discounted rate,” said Thethy. “Our detailing services and VIP cards would be a good Christmas stocking stuơer or gift at any other time in the form of a gift card for your friends and family.

I pop by, say hello and head out and do my job. The staff always make me feel at home. The Gold Rush is on ... site Snow Lake was abuzz with curiosity when, earlier in October, several semis brought dual parts of a massive new building into the downtown area of the community. Once they were placed and sewed together, the two evolved into an impressive new addition to the town ... the Gold Rush Motel! Placed on a lot just south of their Snow Lake Motor Inn, the new building’s coowner Gerard Lamontagne advised that, along with wife Roxane and partners Dustin and Faneeza Lamontagne, they were excited about the possibilities the building and business will bring to the Town of Snow Lake. In giving an overview of the project, Lamontagne stated, “The building is 2,500 square feet with a further 1,000 square feet of wraparound deck.” “There are 12 units, all of which have kitchenettes, big screen TVs, four-piece bath, WiFi, Bluetooth speakers, multiple USB ports, and all rooms are non-smoking,” said Lamontagne. “The decks outside each room will all have barbecues and some seating for the summer months. Another plus for the east facing rooms will be the view of Snow Lake’s beautiful LadyBug garden!” The construction specs of the Gold Rush are also impressive. All units boast

There were four community sites picked for this year’s tree plant; they are as follows: 1) Joseph H. Kerr School and their newly hatched Gardening Club planted 42 trees around the circumference of their large yard in the heart of Snow Lake. Children from elementary to Grade 7, with shovels, hoes and wheelbarrows in hand were noted digging exuberantly in all corners of the yard. “Children are full of life and we need to fuel that spark,” said SLHBC employee Beverley Taylor. “Getting back to nature
and feeling connected is of utmost importance. To be a part of their community helps everyone young and old. Having children learn to grow their own food, smell flowers grown from seed, plant trees and watch them grow, is inspiring to us all.” 2) Snow Lake Health Centre under the auspices of the Snow Lake Health Auxiliary has placed wheelchair accessible garden boxes within a fenced private sitting area. The trees planted in the area have made for a more closed-in and personal area. “The activity the trees will bring will be an added bonus, filled with hours of peace,” said Taylor.

“Visitors can sit and enjoy the quiet with their loved ones.” 3) Sunset Bay Beach has been the recipient of trees for a number of years running and 2017 was no different. “Families love spending the whole day there and with this tree plant, there will one day be shade to help on those sunny, hot days,” Taylor noted. “While flowering in the spring and with fruit in later in the summer, the trees will turn a beautiful colour to enhance our awesome sunsets.” 4) The final location was Ms. Taylor’s very own brainchild, the LadyBug Garden. It takes in the large
area of rock and trees at the south end of the town’s main street. Over the past two years it has grown to an amazing spectacle and has the makings of a tourist destination. “The (donated) trees have been placed so that every level has sight of the flowers and colours to come,” said Taylor. “They will give breaks in between the sitting areas, so that they are all isolated from one another.” “We live bounded by beautiful landscapes and our hope is to enhance what is already here and help our children appreciate it,” Taylor stated on behalf of SLHBC and Tree Canada.
