Fox Lake Cree Nation brings attention to residential school tragedy, one step at a time

Nickel Belt News photos by Ian Graham Members of Fox Lake Cree Nation and York Factory First Nation head out of Thompson on the morning of Sept. 21 during their 1,000-kilometre journey to Winnipeg. The walkers carried the flags of their First Nations and also a banner featuring hand prints made by schoolchildren. BY DAVE BAXTER

LOCAL JOURNALISM INITIATIVE REPORTER, WINNIPEG SUN

A long journey by members of the Fox Lake Cree Nation has community members walking more than 1,000 kilometres from Northern Manitoba to Winnipeg, to bring attention to the tragic legacy of residential schools and the need for more healing and addictions supports in the north. On Sept. 18, Fox Lake Cree Nation councillor

Family of a Pimicikamak Cree Nation member who went missing a few days after returning to Winnipeg from Cross Lake searched for her with the help of the Bear Clan Patrol Sept. 18. Jessie McKay, 22, spent the summer working in Cross Lake and then returned to Winnipeg at the end of August. On Sept. 5, her father dropped her off at a birthday party. She phoned her sister at 10 p.m. that night to say she was going to bring her some cake but never showed up. “No family or friends have heard from her since then,” her uncle Christopher Ross said during a Sept. 17 press conference organized by Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak, which represents 26 Northern Manitoba First Nations. “We just want … Jessie to come home,” said Ross. McKay is 4’11’ tall with dyed blond hair. Anyone with information about her can contact Ross at 204997-4691 or the Winnipeg Police Service’s missing persons unit. MKO missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls liaison unit director Hilda Anderson-Pryz said it is difficult for family from Cross Lake to afford to travel to and stay in Winnipeg while searching for their missing relative and that anyone who wishes to make donations should get in touch with Ross. “It’s a very difficult journey when your loved one’s missing and everyone’s praying that it’s a positive outcome,” Anderson-Pyrz said during last Friday’s press conference.

Sophie Lockhart, who was taken from her family as a child and forced into a residential school, joined about 20 other walkers as they began their trek south from Fox Lake to Winnipeg, a journey of more than 1,000 kilometres. More walkers are expected to join the group as they continue to Winnipeg, and Lockhart said that as a residential school survivor, she hopes the walk will continue to bring attention to the legacy of residential schools in Canada, but also how that legacy has created lasting impacts on Indigenous communities. Over the course of the more than 100 years that residential schools ran in Canada, it is estimated that around 150,000 Indigenous children were forcibly placed in schools across the country and recently the issue of unmarked graves being found near former residential schools in Canada has brought a greater focus to the legacy and the horrors of those schools. “As a national spotlight was shone on graves of children at residential schools, I found myself always thinking about those children that didn’t make it home,” Lockhart said in a press release. “We need to honour those little kids and the survivors. I ran away from residential school three times, and now I am walking to honour those that can’t because they never returned.” Lockhart said there also needs to be more attention and more scrutiny on the institutions that resulted in the implementation of Canada’s residential school system. “It’s important that we

keep the national conversation going. We need to keep holding Canada and the churches accountable,” she said. The walkers also hope to bring attention to the need for increased addictions and healing services in Northern Manitoba, as Lockhart said much of the pain seen in many Indigenous families and communities over decades has stemmed from the residential school system and has led to ongoing issues like addictions and poverty. “Residential school survivors and their families continue to struggle with the lasting intergenerational impacts of being torn from their families, culture, and communities,” Lockhart said. “Some of our people are still lost in addictions, scared to deal with their issues and afraid of the outcome of reopening old wounds. “They need options close to home in order to work through the horror of their experience, learn healthy ways to cope and come to a place of healing that breaks the cycle, and starts to rebuild family and culture.” The walkers are expected to arrive in Winnipeg at the end of the month and plan to gather at the Manitoba legislative building on Sept. 30, coinciding with Orange Shirt Day, and the new federal National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. — Dave Baxter is a Local Journalism Initiative reporter who works out of the Winnipeg Sun. BRANDON BRINGS YOU BACK

Brandon’s historic downtown, nicknamed The Hub, is centered along Rosser Avenue. This handsome collection of heritage architecture with faded ghost signs is a testament to Brandon’s prosperity at the turn of the 20th century. Visit the independent local businesses that now occupy these buildings, including coffee shops, bakeries and favourite eateries as well as shops selling creative gifts, home decor and beauty items. Learn about Brandon’s early life at Daly House Museum, the Victorianstyle home of Brandon’s first mayor. The Brandon General Museum and Archives has three permanent exhibits that highlight the history and nature of the area. The Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum is full of historic aircrafts and artifacts that commemorate the role that the prairie sky and Brandon played in the Royal Canadian Air Force training school during World War II. Check out local art

at the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba and do the self-guided walking tour of the city’s colourful murals before grabbing a bite to eat. Brandon boasts a great selection of restaurants, including a range of multicultural kitchens – ranging from Indian to Ethiopian – that are standouts in the community. Next, discover the Riverbank Discovery Centre in the centre of the city. This network of 17 kilometres of walking trails connects you with the Assiniboine River ecosystem. Ten kilometres south of Brandon off Highway 10, the Brandon Hills Wildlife Management Area is an all-season playground and is particularly well known for single-track mountain biking. Brandon has a number of great hotels, including many with pools and waterslides for the kids. There are four campgrounds in the area, including one at Grand Valley Provincial Park, along with bed and breakfast options.

DAY TRIPS WEST FROM BRANDON

This second day trip heads west from Brandon to discover some gems in the region that mostly only the locals know about. Oak Lake, located 45 kilometres west of Brandon, is a jewel hidden in the seemingly endless farmland of southwest Manitoba. The main draw at Oak Lake Provincial Park down Provincial Road 254 is a sandy, familyfriendly beach. A marina allows you to put a boat into the water for a day of fishing or watersports. Next door to the beach is Oak Island Resort, an all-inclusive getaway that touts a pristine 18-hole golf course and massive 400-site campground. Continue west along the Trans-Canada Highway to Virden, known as the gateway to the Canadian Prairies and the centre

of Manitoba’s small oil industry. Check out the historic CPR Station, which is now home to the Arts Mosaic Gallery and the Aud Theatre, an ornate concert hall built in 1911. Visit the Virden Pioneer Home Museum or head just up the highway to Elkhorn to check out the Manitoba Antique Auto Museum, regarded as one of North America’s best for car enthusiasts. A final stop is Eternal Springs, a hidden oasis located seven kilometres east of Virden. Walking trails lead to a 66-ft swinging bridge over two small stocked trout ponds. It’s an ideal spot for a secluded nature walk and picnic. There several campgrounds in the area, plus Virden has six hotels and a number of bed and breakfasts.

DAY TRIPS EAST FROM BRANDON

Spend the day road tripping east of Brandon to some unique museums found within an hour’s drive. The Royal Canadian Artillery (RCA) Museum at CFB Shilo is dedicated to the history of the more than 200,000 Canadian Gunners who served in war and peace since 1855. See large artillery pieces, vehicles soldier dioramas and more.

↓ Manitoba Agricultural Museum

Spend the latter half of the afternoon learning about Manitoba’s pioneer past at the Manitoba Agricultural Museum just outside the town of Austin. The Homesteaders’ Village represents prairie village life in the late 19th century with an 1883 schoolhouse, a post office that once served all of northwestern Manitoba, an elegant clapboard mansion and a general store.

Manitoba encompasses Treaty 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 Territory and communities who are signatories to Treaties 6 and 10. It is the original lands of the Anishinaabeg, AnishIniniwak, Dakota, Dene, Ininiwak and Nehethowuk and the homeland of the Métis. Acknowledging these original caretakers is a reminder of our unique heritage, our important relationships and our obligations to and shared responsibilities with Indigenous peoples.
