RCMP detachment gets custom wolf statue BY KYLE DARBYSON KYLE@THOMPSONCITIZEN.NET
Thompson is renowned for its painted wolf statues and a new colourful canine was added to the mix as of Sept. 26. With its red serge, brown campaign hat and yellowstriped breeches, this piece of artwork is right at home at the entrance to Thompson’s RCMP detachment on Selkirk Avenue. According to detachment Insp. Kevin Lewis, this latest wolf statue installation is much overdue. “All the prominent organizations, and some of the private businesses, have one, and it makes sense that the police would have one too,” he said. “So it kind of ties into that whole community aspect and brings us into the Spirit Way.” The Thompson RCMP tasked local artist Jan Hall with bringing this project to life, since she already worked on a flower-themed wolf statue that currently resides next to the Heritage North Museum.
Nickel Belt News photo by Kyle Darbyson Artist Jan Hall poses next to her latest wolf statue painting with members of the Thompson RCMP on Sept. 26. “We’ve actually seen some of her work,” said Lewis. “She had a little bit of a vi-
sion for how she saw the RCMP one rolling out … and we really liked what she had
proposed.” Lewis also added a little bit of himself to this piece,
since his campaign hat is currently sitting atop the wolf’s head.
“I gave them mine so that it kind of… immortalizes me in Thompson to some degree,” he said. “My hat will always be here on that wolf provided someone doesn’t steal it.” While a plaque still has to be added to this statue, Spirit Way organizer Volker Beckmann said the turnaround on this project was incredibly quick, since they were only given the green light around four to five weeks ago. “We could have been done during AuroraFest, but we wanted to make sure the paint cured and dried,” he said. In Beckmann’s estimation, there are now over 50 Spirit Way wolf statues on display throughout Manitoba and beyond. While around 36 statues take up residence in Thompson, the rest can be found scattered throughout Winnipeg, Churchill, Lorette, and even New York State. According to the Spirit Way’s official website, each wolf statue is solid concrete, weighs 5,500 pounds, and stands 7.5 feet tall.
Residents reclaim the streets during Take Back the Night BY KYLE DARBYSON KYLE@THOMPSONCITIZEN.NET
For over three decades, people throughout the world have used Take Back the Night marches to bring awareness to the issue of violence against women. The residents of Thompson are no different and took to the streets Sept. 21, since the Hub of the North is not immune from the sobering reality of domestic abuse. “At least one out of every three women worldwide have been beaten, forced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime,” said Mary Demare, a representative from the Thompson Crisis Centre. “Of these crimes, less than 50 per cent are reported to the police. It’s time to make a change.” With these statistics in mind, the 45 or so people on hand for Thursday’s march began their journey at Robin’s Donuts
and made their way into Thompson’s downtown core via Selkirk Avenue before eventually looping around Thompson Drive and Mystery Lake Road to reach their original starting point. This section of the city has been known as the site of many assaults, especially in a year where overall cases of violent crime have shot up by 28 per cent. “Take Back the Night events are geared towards empowering women to confront fears about assault by reclaiming the evening streets en masse,” said Elizabeth Lychuk, a representative from the Northern Regional Health Authority. “The events call for safety and equality for women in all places at all times.” While the number of overall participants was defi nitely down from the last couple iterations, this year’s Take Back the Night event still attracted a num-

monies, where he reminded everyone that domestic abuse disproportionately affects women and girls in the Indigenous community. “There’s far too many
in the province and across the country, and especially from the north,” he said, referencing the national inquiry into murdered and missing Indigenous women
and girls. “Many of our sisters and our mothers and our friends and our neighbours that have gone missing are no longer with us because of violence.”

Rockcliff completes airborne survey of Laguna gold property near Wekusko Lake
Marc Jackson
My Take on Snow Lake editor@undergroundpress.ca In a Sept. 7 news release, Rockcliff Copper Corporation announced that they had completed an airborne drone magnetometer survey at the company’s Laguna gold property, located near the eastern shore of Wekusko Lake (Herb in the Cree language) and about 20 or so kilometres from Snow Lake.
Within the release, they noted the survey has identifi ed the six-kilometre long Laguna gold mine trend, associated with known goldbearing quartz stockwork systems on the property. As those familiar with Manitoba mining history are aware, the Laguna property hosts the former Laguna gold mine, Manitoba’s fi rst and, to date, highest-grade gold mine. The Rex/Laguna Mine was an economic mainstay of the now extinct community of Herb Lake. It was the only mine, of the many on the east side of Wekusko Lake (Moosehorn/Ballast, Bingo, and the Ferro being others) that offered somewhat stable employment to the community. Albeit, not over its first incarnation as the Rex Mine, which opened in 1917. The Manitoba Historical Society notes that it was the

first Manitoba mine to have a mill installed and became one of the first gold producers of the area using the amalgamation process to recover gold from the ore. It operated as the Rex Mine for eight years, although not on a continuous basis, and fi nally closed because of a shortage of employees and an influenza epidemic. During that period it produced 7,000 ounces of gold. It opened nine years later in 1934 as the Laguna and operated for five years, producing another 48,000 ounces of gold. The mine has lain dormant for over 75 years and this had many in the community of Snow Lake scratching their heads in wonder. Of all the old mines on the east shore of Wekusko, the Rex/Laguna was the most successful; therefore, it made sense the former producer would hold the greatest promise. Rockcliff’s current look at the property appears to be the most sustained and substantive exploration the mine has realized since its glory days. In respect to Rockcliff’s latest fl urry of activity at the Laguna, the company stated their activities in
the release. “The airborne drone magnetometer survey successfully identified the Laguna gold mine trend, a six-kilometre long by 200-metre wide structurally complex geological trend,” stated Rockcliff’s president and chief executive officer Ken Lapierre. “The Laguna gold mine trend hosts multiple, surface-exposed, high-grade gold-bearing quartz vein stockwork systems which are associated with sub-parallel subsidiary fault splays east of a major regional NE-SW trending thrust fault known as the Crowduck Bay fault. The high-grade gold-bearing quartz vein stockworks are located along high-strain zones on or near the contact with partially exposed folded quartz-feldspar-porphyry intrusions. The potential for the discovery of additional gold bearing quartz vein stockworks within the Laguna gold mine trend is considered excellent and represents the priority target at the Laguna gold property. Additional surveys including VLF and IP geophysical surveys across the Laguna gold mine trend are nearing completion and results will be released in the coming weeks.”

UAV deliver higher quality magnetic data at a decreased cost with a reduced environmental footprint,” the company says. In a subsequent Sept. 26 release, Rockcliff announced they will initiate a fi rst phase drill program on the company’s Bur zinc property in October. They plan to include between 10 to 15 holes, totalling approximately 3,000 metres of drilling, which will be focused on expanding the deposit. The Bur property is part of the company’s Manitoba property portfolio and is located approximately 28 kilometres by road from Snow Lake. “The Bur zinc deposit is one of the highest grade undeveloped zinc-rich deposits in the Flin Flon-Snow Lake mining camp within trucking distance to an operating base metal mill facility,” said the company’s CEO. “The drilling program is designed to identify additional zincrich mineralization along strike and at depth to the existing historical Bur zinc deposit. We are confident that this fi rst phase drill program will be successful in achieving our goal of advancing this high grade zinc asset.”
Missing Thompson man Hasn’t been heard from since Aug. 20 RCMP are looking for 51-year-old Arthur Fitzner of Thompson, who was reported missing Sept. 11 and hasn’t been in touch with family or friends since Aug. 20. Described as Indigenous and 5’9” tall and about 185 pounds, Fitzner has brown hair and a receding hairline and was staying in Thompson, though he may have travelled to The Pas, Flin Flon or Winnipeg. Also noted in the release was the fact that between 1916 and 1939, the mine in its two incarnations produced close to 60,000 ounces of high grade gold grading approximately 19.0 g/t. The Laguna’s current infrastructure consists of a reclaimed and covered three compartment vertical shaft to 381 metres and eight levels totalling over three kilometres of underground drift and stope development. The Laguna Property now includes 28 contiguous mining claims totalling 3,501 hectares covering a minimum six kilometres of prospective strike length of the Laguna gold mine trend. In respect to the recent survey, it was performed with an airborne drone magnetometer. The company says a total of 1,120 kilometres of tightly spaced lines between 25-metre and 50-metre spacing were completed at the property by A.I.R. Inc. based in Flin Flon, Manitoba. The low-flying unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is a Canadian-designed and built helicopter style UAV which slings a potassium magnetic sensor underneath. “Ultimately, magnetic surveys done from a

Foundation of new sewage treatment plant in place Excavation and foundation-pouring for Thompson’s new wastewater treatment plant is complete and rebar is in place for the construction of the structure, the city said in a Sept. 26 press release. The sublevel of the treatment plant will house two sequential batch reactors to filter out solid waste and feed sewage into aerobic digesters to make the effluent environmentally safe. There will also be an equalization chamber to store and release effluent to ensure consistent pressure through the wastewater system. A new force main that will utilize lift stations in the city, including a new one on Cree Road, to move pressurized sewage and water runoff to the sewage treatment plant is ready to be installed along Princeton Drive. Construction will continue through the winter and until the plant is completed. “I’m excited to hear that construction of the wastewater treatment plant has progressed according to plan so far,” said Mayor Dennis Fenske in the news release. “The construction of our facility is in excellent hands and I look forward to its unveiling by our future council.”
The city provided an update on construction of the new wastewater treatment plant Sept. 26.
Proud of how northerners come together
Kelly Bindle
MLA Report kelly.bindle.mla.office @gmail.com Our government has to make smart choices with the money entrusted to us by Manitobans, for the benefit of all Manitobans. To make these choices, we want to
hear from Manitobans on pressing issues facing our province – particularly on balancing the budget, the long-term sustainability of our health-care system and dealing with the upcoming federal legalization of marijuana. We have launched prebudget consultations on these matters to give people across the province a real voice in the decisions our government makes. We have posted an online survey at www.manitobansmakingchoices.ca, and residents of every part of the province are encouraged to take the survey and have their say.
As part of these consultations, I will hold a town hall meeting on Saturday, Oct. 7 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ma-Mow-We-Tak Frendship Centre in Thompson. As well, Finance Minister Cameron Friesen will hold town hall meetings this fall in several parts of the province. Telephone town-hall sessions will also provide opportunities to speak on these issues. For further information, visit www.manitobansmakingchoices.ca. In the Thompson constituency, we’re proud of the north - and it shows. Congratulations to the 2,000plus northerners whom I

had a chance to howl like a wolf with last week at the ball diamonds beside the Boreal Discovery Centre in Thompson, as we tried to secure our place in the Guinness Book of Records for most people howling like a wolf together for one minute. It was quite the feat for the organizers and volunteers to corral and count everyone. This shows how northerners come together, participate and support each other when needed. It was my pleasure to
share the joy with graduates of the Youth Build Program and their families at the Boys & Girls Club of Thompson last week. Congratulations to Cheynna Beardy, Kristen Dick, Tara-Lynn Dick, Jordan Merasty-Moose, Sylvan McCallum and Gavin Weenusk for completing the 34-week program that included educational upgrading, life skills mentoring, carpentry and employment training. Their instructors are going to miss them, and I wish them all the best in their
job placements. I’m also pleased that Jeff Wharton, Minister of Municipal Relations, has announced details of $50,000 in funding for the City of Thompson to build a multiuse path from the east side of Mystery Lake Road along Princeton Drive to Highland Tower. This work is being done through the provincial Small Communities Transportation Fund, which is supported with a portion of Manitoba’s federal Gas Tax Fund allocation.

Pride Week concludes with big changes on the horizon BY KYLE DARBYSON KYLE@THOMPSONCITIZEN.NET
Thompson’s fourthannual Pride Week came to a close Sept. 23 with a mini-festival at the Bill Comaskey Wellness Centre in the Thompson Regional Community Centre. This year’s final event, put together by the nonprofi t organization Pride North of 55, was a decidedly relaxed get-together, featuring popcorn, music and some family-friendly activities. According to Harlie Pruder, the chairperson of Pride North of 55, it was really important to push this mini-festival as a “family” event, since it
feeds into their overriding mission to foster acceptance for LGBTTQ people. “If kids aren’t taught to discriminate against people, then they’re not going to have that mindset from day one,” she said. Outside of a Sept. 16 march, the theme of acceptance also carried over to a Pride flag raising ceremony that took place outside of City Hall Sept. 18, which featured members of Thompson city council, including Mayor Dennis Fenske. To Pruder, this gesture represents the “political aspect” of Pride Week and how local governments play a role in spreading awareness.
“That had been something that I was concerned about when we first started Pride,” said Pruder. “I was worried that organizations and businesses and political fi gures wouldn’t be behind us and I was really shocked at how that didn’t happen. They were right there behind us, ready to support us.” However, despite widespread support from the local government and, Pruder said Pride North of 55 will be undergoing some significant changes in the years to come. Due to fact that events like this year’s minifestival experience low attendance, Pruder said
Pride North of 55 is heading in a new direction that doesn’t focus on largescale celebrations. “When we first started we were modelled after Pride Winnipeg because they were the ones who helped us,” she said. “So we kind of did whatever we thought would work. But clearly Thompson is much smaller and it’s just a different community. We’re different types of people.” Pruder said Pride North
