THOMPSON CITIZEN GRADUATION SPECIAL
A message from Lynn Taylor, Publisher: THIS ISSUE
carries a special place for me as my Granddaughter, Kathleen was among the graduates at the ceremonies held on June 28th. As I sat there watching everyone receive their diploma I was able to reflect on many very happy memories of Kathleen and her friends as they journeyed through the past four years. I truly believe that the success of these teens is primarily due to the teaching, counselling and support staff at the high school – without their dedication and support our kids would not have achieved as high a success as they did. Involvement in the band, choir, athletic and other activities available at the school has opened the door to future opportunities for our grads and has seen them grow into very mature, caring young adults. There are some very special people I would like to acknowledge and thank for contributing to the very positive experiences Kathleen will forever remember. They are Grace Bindle who taught Kath’s kindergarten class and provided her with a solid beginning of her education. Cynthia MacGregor who provided Kathleen with many positive experiences both in and after school hours during her time at Ecole Riverside School. Leo Landers and Debbie Belyea, who made the transition from Riverside to Deerwood School a very smooth and positive
experience. Wally Itson who provided positive mentorship in encouraging and supporting involvement in the band and choir programs, as well as, the wonderful teachers of these programs – Matthew Allard, Kevin and Sarah Lewis and Katie Ann PapesioNemeth. Ryan Barker who encouraged Kathleen to spread her wings and pursue her capabilities as a writer. Brian McCusker, Robin Foley, Bobby Ellis, Coral Thompson were instrumental in giving Kathleen a sound understanding of the subjects they taught and last but not least the counsellors, Treena Kuhl, Krista Kristjanson and Lisa Evasiuk who were very approachable, understanding and helpful whenever Kathleen needed their advice and assistance. The friendships formed up to this point in time will always remain true throughout Kath’s life. As her “Nan” I feel very privileged to have come to know and care about each one of you – Hareet, Domanick, Maya, Jyoti, Nicole, and Diamond. I wish each of you the best that life has to offer. I would like to close this by hoping every member of the 2016 graduating class achieve success and happiness in whatever venture you choose in future. You are beginning a new stage of your life – don’t forget your roots but continue to grow and achieve everything you are capable of.

GOOD EVENING
everyone. I’d like to thank you all for being here, especially the parents, friends, teachers, and family that are here tonight, on behalf of myself and of the graduates, who owe their front-row seats tonight to you. Your support and guidance have undoubtedly gotten the class of 2016 to where they are, and tonight, their success is your success. The other day, the day before final exams began in fact, I drove up in the parking lot, shut off my car and picked off yet another peace of saran wrap off the windshield wipers. As I walked into the school, past the hairstyling room, past the Parker gym, I looked up and saw a sign that said, “We’ll miss you,” signed “the Class of 2016” Then I looked to my left and saw the stairs wrapped with about 20 rolls of saran wrap, blocking anyone from using them. (Just as an aside: If anyone is wondering why you haven’t been able to buy saran wrap in Thompson for the month of June it is because the class of 2016 seems to have needed every available roll for a various number of pranks that they can tell you about later.) Anyways, and the stairs were filled with balloons. I
thought, “hmm, not that impressive. Maybe they couldn’t get enough volunteers to help with the prank. You see, there weren’t really that many balloons on the stairs. As I walked shaking my head down the grade 12 hallway, I thought I saw a few weird looks from some students. You know, the look that people have when they can’t keep a secret. When I walked into my office, I knew where a lot of time and effort was spent: My office was filled up to here [waist high gesture] with balloons. Now that was impressive. I heard someone remark, if the students spent ½ as much time and effort with their schoolwork as they did with these pranks… well you get the idea. In fact many students sitting in front of me tonight did spend a lot of time and effort on their schoolwork. 51 students of our graduating class received honors or honors with distinction: That’s more than one of every 3 students. Congratulations, that, takes time and effort. But I would really like to congratulate each and every one of the 150 graduates here tonight. In addition to my deepest congratulations, I also have 4 thank you’s that I’d like to share with tonight’s graduates.
Alisha Sewell Congratulations on your graduation and your scholarship from U of M. Wishing you every success in the next chapter of your life. We love you and we are so proud of you. THANK YOU
for leaving your mark on our school. Whether it was figurative, like the new traditions you have started at our school, like Grade wars, or visiting your elementary school’s in graduation dress earlier today or a more physical mark, like the dozens of balloons that I’m not sure will ever completely clear out of my office, or the red marks on my wrists, or those pairs of tiny round symmetrical holes on the front lawn of the school, you have left your mark, class of 2016.
THANK YOU
for the selflessness with which you’ve given of your time and talents to make our school a leader in Manitoba’s north.
THANK YOU
to each and every one of you that got involved while you were here at RD Parker, in our school groups, clubs, and events. This involvement makes our school a great place to learn and grow. and
THANK YOU
in advance on behalf of the communities in which you will live and continue to lead and serve, be they Thompson or our surrounding communities.
Your teachers, families, and friends have invested a lot into trying to make you the best people we could, and tonight, we can proudly say that we were successful. Whatever you choose to do with your lives, we can feel confident in believing that the pride that everyone here feels tonight will return throughout our lives as you accomplish the great things that are in store for you. On behalf of the teachers, support staff, our volunteers, our custodians and everyone else that works with our grade 12 students I just want to say in conclusion,

HERE WE ARE
to celebrate your success. You have mastered many skills in your time as a student, both academically and socially - the ABC’s, 123, to divide or not to divide, how to play and work together along with thousands of other outcomes. You’ve learned what it means to be a good citizen, that everyone has a gift to share, and that everyone has a valued place in our community. Your education journey began around the year 2003 or so: That is the year that Apple launched iTunes, Finding Nemo was released and Paul Martin was our Prime Minster. Fast forward to today, and you can see the progress. I believe iTunes is still the way to obtain music legally, Finding Dory has just been released and we’ve had a few prime ministers throughout your school career. The point is that the world continues to evolve and change, and that includes your next great adventure. Your next adventure beyond grade 12 requires some essential skills – which coincidentally you have learned along the way. You need to be critical thinkers, creative thinkers; you need to be able to work in a collaborative setting and you will also need to have strong communication skills – and not just on the phone or through Snapchat. Some of you will end up in careers that do not even exist at this point. Forbes has a list of jobs that have come into existence within the last ten years – here are a few options: app developer, market research data miner, admissions consultant, social media manager, and
cloud computing. The sky is the limit when it comes to your future. Education doesn’t stop with graduation. Continue to build on your knowledge and learn something new every day. Thank your families, your teachers, the support staff and your friends. Be proud of your accomplishment here today. You’ve earned it. Be kind to one another and to all those that you meet on your travels. Take care and be safe. Congratulations to the class of 2016. GOOD EVENING!
Congratulations Grads and of course same goes to all the friends and families who have supported these amazing graduates! It is a proud day! I want to acknowledge that we are in Treaty 5 territory, traditional lands of the NCN, home land of the Metis, and more recently the city of Thompson. When I was asked to speak today, I was very honoured and accepted immediately. After I accepted, one of the teachers said it will be nice to have a young person, and I thought to myself (and I think I said it out loud) “Young to their grandparents maybe.” It has been 22 years since I sat where you are. I remember the butterflies, the excitement, the nervousness, wanting the moment to last, wanting it to end, the pride of accomplishing something so significant. Feeling the pressure of this “real world” people were talking about. I do know this: whatever you decide to do in the world, do what makes you happy in the moment. Explore opportunities. Change careers or focus on one—but do what is true to you, true to who you are and true to who you want to be. Trust your intuition, listen to your guts-they will never fail you. Your ego on the other hand—keep that in check. Education was not always a tool to advance Aboriginal people: sadly our Canadian Government used it as a tool to harm First Nation, Metis and Inuit people. Through resiliency and dedication, survivors negotiated a commitment from Canada to seek out and tell the truth about Residential Schools as well to move forward in that truth as Canadians through reconciliation. I ask you to think about Truth and Reconciliation and the 94 Calls to
Kathleen Congrats on graduating! As you go forward take with you the lessons learned and make all your dreams come true. We love you, Dad & Allie, Caitlyn & Adam
Action that have been made. Your generation knows so much more about this history, than I or people older me ever knew at your age. That is hopeful. Use this knowledge to make the world, Canada, and your community better. I ask you to challenge systems; don’t wait for systems to catch up with the times, make systems match our times. We need your passion in our systems and we need your youthful perspective. Remember to listen to your Elders; they are human, so they are not perfect, but the life experience and wisdom they carry have many teachings and quite honestly provide the balance to your youthful perspective. In my opinion, relationships will be the most important aspect of your life. First, your relationship with yourself: learning to be honest with yourself, learning to be true to who you are. Relationships with Family, Friends, boyfriend or girlfriend , co-workers, your boss—all of these relationships will be stronger when you practise kindness. Don’t mistake kindness with just letting injustices slide; rather, it is to express your concern with kindness. And remember relationships change; you one day could be your teachers colleague or their boss. In closing, TRAVEL as much as you can, open your heart and mind to see how different and how similar people are who live in our province, country and world. You will forever be changed after travelling. Most change is good, change is growth. Remember you can still be true to who you are when you grow and change. Don’t settle for one story of who you are, know you are many awesome things that make you you! Be safe in all your celebrations of this milestone.
Congratulations

THANK YOU
Mr Jindal for that kind introduction; and thank you graduates for inviting me to speak today I am truly honored that you chose me to be your 2016 grad speaker First of all, let me say congratulations to all of you. You should be very very proud of yourselves for accomplishing this amazing goal. Well done and know that we are all so proud of each and every one of you. I know that you must all be getting excited to get your hands on that diploma and run out into the world but like all things your lessons are not done. Graduation is one of those steps in life that defines the coming of age- the ending of one era of life as a high school student and moving on to a new stage in which you are a leader, a doer and hopefully an achiever in this wide world of ours. I’m sure many of you have firm plans and have an idea of what’s coming next, some of you have a pretty good idea of what you want to do next, and some of you are just amazed that you got to this point at all! Well I promise that the coming times will be exciting, they will be trying, but they will all be dependent on you and your determination. As you know, it’s a tough world out there, and nothing will be handed to you – you have to earn it – and it will mean more to you because you did earn it. You’re now armed with one of the most important tools needed to forge your path ahead. It’s not the diploma itself that counts – it’s about what you’ve learned along the way, and what you do with that education that you’ve achieved on this academic journey. Your future is in your hands – no one else’s. Seize every opportunity. For me, the most important thing in life is to live life with integrity, and not to give into peer pressure to try to be something that you’re not: to live life as an honest and compassionate person, and to try to contribute in some way. There are no mistakes. There is a supreme moment of destiny calling on your life. Your job is to feel that, to
Congratulations to
Corbin We are very proud of your accomplishment! Mom, Dad & Family
hear that, to know that, and sometimes when you’re not listening, you get taken off track. You don’t get the job, you break up with your partner, it’s all leading to the same path. There are no wrong paths. There is no such thing as failure: Failure is just that thing trying to move you in another direction, so you learn as much if not more from your losses as you do from your victories. Those losses are there to shake you and to say things like, “That’s why you finish school! So you can have the life you wish for.” You can spend your whole life chasing ghosts, worrying about the pathway to the future and all that will ever be is what’s happening here and the decisions we make in this moment that are based on love or fear. So many of us choose our pathway out of fear disguised as practicality: what we really want seems impossibly out of reach and ridiculous to expect. So we never dare to ask the universe for it. I’m saying, ask the universe for it. You can fail at what you don’t want, so why not take the chance to do something you love? So to conclude, follow your passion, stay true to yourself. Best of luck in all your future endeavors. Have a great night, party safely, and take care of each other.
Kathleen:
Congrats on this happy day! Always remember that you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think. We are all so very proud of you! Love, Uncle James, Aunt Krislyn, Uncle Kyle, Aunt Donann & the boys.
Valedictorian Address Srijit Jindal
GOOD EVENING
ladies and gentlemen, In a second, I will be addressing my graduating class as a valedictorian. But first, let me take a selfie. On behalf of the Graduating class, I would like to welcome and thank all parents, guardians, teachers, friends, family and distinguished guests to the 55th graduation ceremony of R.D Parker Collegiate. I would also like to say that it’s a true pleasure and a huge honour for me to be standing up here before you all, representing my graduating class, and I cannot possibly thank you enough for that! Well, Graduates, as a group four years ago we did indeed start from the very bottom; now it looks like the whole team’s here. Despite all the odds, like global warming, James Ajao, Ebola, World War 3 (you know, Drake vs. Meek Mill going back to back!), days with ridiculous weather like -50 and several blackouts, we did it! So let’s all give ourselves a round of applause for that. After looking back at the last four years, it’s just amazing to see how far we’ve come. In our freshmen year, we stepped into this strange, wild and unknown world. We didn’t know what we we’re in for. For instance, we didn’t know that

there was that one crazy science teacher with lizards in her classroom (All Jokes Sousa!), just like we didn’t know that the school had a backup warning bell like Mrs. Foley. Now, we can’t imagine the school running normally without these 2 people. Just think about all the ridiculous words that we used in the past and all the absurd dance moves that were created along the way. Like, the running man, the whip, the worm and the Doggie. I mean 4 years ago, Dradon Day could barely lift the bar and today he can probably bench press Jake Baker times 2 without hesitation. The point being, we became more comfortable with this place, and the so called ‘strangers’ became our some of our closest friends, and it wasn’t long until R.D Parker became our second home. Just think about all the great memories that we’ve made together, like Prom, senior pranks, the school trips, and the senior Skip day! After all, high school did become the best 4 years of our lives. High school was fun, it was no walk in the park. Every one of us, including me, has had a few bad memories and a fair share of disappointments. For example, the first time we failed a test, the second time we failed a test, the third time we failed a test… then figuring out that the guy you sat next to and thought was smart had actually been failing all those tests! Things didn’t always go as planned but we all learned from our mistakes. We became stronger emotionally. and grew physically. I know that we all may not agree that high school helped us in any way, but I think we all can agree that our graduating class is brilliant. I mean, just take a look around yourself, and you will see that we have a lot of people who have proven themselves great academically. For example, Thomas Nolin and Savannah Szocs, who are graduating with very close to a perfect GPA. We also have had some people with tremendous athletic success, like Adrianna, Caitlyn and Brianna, who have been provincial Basketball champs twice in a row. For me, being good friends with Glenn Shatfort has been a true pleasure. He’s not only on the honour roll; he has also raised mental health awareness around the community on several occasions. Well, that and the fact that he’s been giving me rides for free (jk, Glenn). As I look upon the rows of graduates tonight, I am very pleased with the amount of potential that’s filled in this room. Graduates, you are all great, intellectual, capable individuals who are destined for success. Just take a look around and you’ll see quite a few future Engineers like Rushi, Jessica and Brandon Nowlin; my future parole officer, Officer James Cripps; my future lawyer, who probably got me into trouble in the first place, Mr. Rhys Volanski; A great asset to the military, Mr. Tyler Seymour (how are you doin’ Tyler) and doctors (and yes, I’m talking to ya’ll Indian kids down there), we’re all very excited to get checked up by nurses like Festina. On top of that, we have numerous grads wanting to be electricians, dentists, mechanics, social workers, carpenters, drug dealers…… over the counter ones- of course. And yes, the future of the future generation is secure in the hands of
future teachers like Paige Johnson and Lorice Pilling. This is the time that one of many chapters in our lives is finished and a new one is about to begin. The new chapter is not the one that you read or the one that someone will write for you, but the one that you determine and write for yourself. Today is the day that you have complete control over your actions. Today, you should ask yourself, “what do I have to offer to this world and how can I make a difference in people’s lives?” For many of us, who are off to college or university next year, your education once again will lighten the path to your search for those answers. And the rest of you who are not, there is no better teacher than experience. And the answers to those questions do not lie in degrees or in diplomas but the learning experience that is life. From this point on, life will not get any easier for a while, and the failures are certain when trying something new. But instead of that first failure demotivating you, you’ve got to learn from your mistakes and keep pushing through. I think I can best describe this by the words of Thomas Edison: When Edison was asked how he feels about failing a 1000 times before inventing the lightbulb,” he said, “I did not fail a thousand times, the lightbulb was just an invention with a 1000 steps!” Success won’t just come overnight, and the destination may seem far, or might not even be very clear just yet. But one day, when you find where you want to be, that day is going to be the most “put together” day of your life. But the day that’s going to be even better than that is when you get where you have always wanted to be. That’s the day in your life when all the sweat, the time and the dedication is going to pay off, and you will be glad that you overcame all those hurdles that you did to get there. That will be the day you look back and cherish every single minute of the journey and be glad that you chose the path that you did. I guess there are just a couple of things left to say. Thank you to Parents, educators, friends, family and fellow graduates for supporting us through the thick and thin and for helping us to get where we are today. Thanks to all you graduates for making high school so special for me; I could not have possibly asked for a better group of people to graduate with. I think the best way to end this speech is with the words of a world renowned street philosopher, Drake. He says, “I live for the nights that I can’t remember, with the people that I won’t forget.” Grads, life is short. So explore the world, follow your heart, and say Y.O.L.O every once in a while. At the same time, keep a close eye on your goal and make sure to capture it while you can. Just remember your roots, your friends, your family and more importantly, who you are. Class of 2016, congratulation and I wish you all the very best for the future. Graduates, always stay blessed and stay golden! Thank you very everybody and have a great rest of the evening, Thank you.
