The Page Count must be exact when creating your Cover template.. You’ll need to upload a PDF for the pages and at least one cover type. Remember, all books must be an even number of pages. The first page will be on the right side as you open the cover and the last page will be on the left side as you close the book. Hardcover books include an end sheet on both the front and back of the inside pages for binding purposes. Please note, all critical text and art should appear within this gray area. Any content outside this area may be unevenly trimmed or hidden by the gutter when the book is bound. PLANNING
The first week has begun! And then it ended. Pretty quickly, actually.
tion a system that both utilizes technology and promotes physical interaction.
• Be able to take notes, draw directly on digital depiction of work
So, through the course of this week, I basically just took down all of my ideas and begun to organize them on paper. I took a step back and analyzed what exactly I was trying to do, figured out what the base idea of the end product would be like, then started to put together a rough schedule of things to do.
• How I can use and promote technology within this system:
• Possibly be able to take a 3D “panorama” of work, so someone can view it and spin it completely around.
•The main purpose of this project is to create a system that allows for a sharing of knowledge and skills by professionals while utilizing today’s technology to craft a fully interactive experience •Something to supplement a formal educa-
• Allows for more interactive, in-depth experience when not meeting in person •Take advantage of front-facing and regular cameras for crit, meetings, or just to document work • Possibly implement a calendar system? Some way to keep track of projects and due dates.
• Fully utilize technology- this is how this system will be set apart from the competition. use specific devices: possibly desktop and tablet for more screen space. • Maybe a stripped down app for phone? With calendar / planner, etc? • How I can use and promote physical interaction outside the system:
PLANNING
• This helps tie the app in with a regular, university education •Everyone says that the physical elements of school is the most important part- this system can have that. •Can have a weekly or biweekly meeting between students and instructors. • Open-office hours with professionals either in person / Skype call / chat. • Physicality will help with accountability, which is super important!! • Gamification element? To help provide motivation for people to accomplish assignments • With a formal education, there are people to help keep you on track and organized. This is where the physical element comes in. To do next: Research physical school alternatives, like School Hous, etc. Research SkillShare, Udemy, etc. and take notes on positives and negatives. Take a class! Talk to Spencer about SkillShare Research forms of learning and find ways to implement within this system
Q
RESEARCH
Research :competitor audits
SKILLSHARE Interface Audit:
I began with competitor audits and started with Skillshare, which is arguably the most popular of the systems I’m researching. I listed out important interface elements that I noticed while perusing the site in order to find out what works best and what seemed to fail. In summary: • The interface is quite simple, which allows for almost anyone to join. • Instructors don’t really have much interact with students or anyone else. • Too many people sign up for classes which makes the environment seem impersonal.
Research :competitor audits
SKILLSHARE Interface Audit:
After taking an in-depth look at SkillShare and how the site functions, I took a look at Guides, a competitor site that functions more like a how-to guide than a digital classroom. Overall, the interface was fairly clean, but the way it is structured leaves a lot to be desired. To summarize my Guides experience: • Much like SkillShare, this site doesn’t take advantage of the different devices it lives on. • Not much interactivity • Relies too heavily on reading, not enough multimedia or other forms of learning.
SCENARIOS
SCENARIOS
The third week mostly focused on getting use case scenarios mapped out so I could get a bit of a better feel for what I was attempting to achieve with this application and what the app was going to be like wen interacted with. Use case scenarios also helped me start to establish the personality of the app and determine how it would live on the multiple platforms.

Branding may have ended up being the most difficult part of the entire process. Selecting a name for the massive system took quite a long while and I ended up getting stuck on trying to solve the branding puzzle for a few weeks. Ultimately, I decided to let branding float with the rest of the project and work on it as other elements got figured out.
BRANDING
Branding went through a few different phases, starting with finally selecting the name Workshop, then working on selecting the typeface to be used for the logotype. After that, I moved on to creating the full logotype as well as the icon and signature.
BRANDING
Signature
The final branding focuses on showing a few of the major keywords Workshop is built from: Process, Personal, and Professional. Elements from within the Signature and the icon allow for the brand to be flexible and change form as needed.

WIREFRAMES
WIREFRAMES
Wireframes began as simple sketches to get the main ideas of the application’s structure down. These were fast and gestural, and quickly evolved into digital, more detailed wireframes.

FINAL DESIGNS
FINAL DESIGNS
iphone The iPhone focuses on simplified tasks that can be done while on the go, such as checking on class assignments, completing assignments, checking schedules, and adding meetups with people.
FINAL DESIGNS
iPAD The iPad functionality becomes a bit more complex as the device’s screen becomes larger, allowing the user to take in more information and interact with more items. More choices are presented on each individual screen and deeper scenarios are available, such as interactive CritCalls (like a Skype call) and leaving feedback for already posted work.

Desktop The desktop version of the application is the most complex, allowing for the most amount of interactions and scenarios, such as being able to use the floating notebook and messenger features. The desktop version of Workshop is especially handy for the instructors, allowing them to create and maintain courses as well as accomplish tasks found on both the iPad and iPhone versions of the app.
