Austin Bowling Derby Professor Awards
John Blood Sound Building Distinction Continued Study in Engineering
Situated on 9th and red river street, the new home for the austin hellcats roller derby team interacts with the city grid corridor and the new waller creek pedestrian and bike trail. c o n c e p t : Dual entrances bring occupants in from red river street coming to bowl or skate before a concert next door at stubbs as well as people walking along waller creek who are attracted by the roar of the derby stadium. Both entrances allow visitors to rent skates or bowling shoes for the day and proceed vertically through the building starting at the most casual level with the roller derby rink moving to a family bowling, free-skating, and restaurant level and ending at the fourth oor bar and bowling lounge that overlooks the third oors bowling lanes and skating roof. The more casual roller skating program and family bowling are oriented toward waller creek while the adult bowling oor aims west to downtown austin and the capitol. 4

The building's structure helps to divide the two entrances and allows the program to be the link between waller creek and red river street. Shear cores provide the vertical circulation in the central mass of the building while floor to ceiling steel trusses containing the bowling lanes puncture the solid core mass to link the two faces of the building and direct occupant views.

An in depth analysis of the community organization and circulation schemes developed in kowloon walled city, demolished in 1993 outside of beijing and a continued study of the unique active lifestyle seen in austin, texas come together to create a new style of living. Residents, businessmen, shoppers, and clients traipse through encountering each other at every level. c o n c e p t : A reversed organization of public and private space guides temporary occupants to the top floors and several floors along the way. The permanent residents are woven throughout the vertical section of the structure with breaks in residential program to create an active life style and encourage public use of high rise views as well as open air park levels located at the base of the structure.

Programmatic Analysis of Kowloon Walled City 19
The site plan expands a portion of the kowloon massing to approximate the density of downtown austin at 2nd street and san antonio street capitalizing on the lake front to the south and shoal creek to the east. Varied floor plans create a web of circulation horizontally through the structure while stair cases form vertical communities among programs. The stacked floor plates dapple the light through the core. The main unit plan focuses on a live|work environment with a private office on the second floor. This allows the first floor to stay wholly living with the option of an attached office or spare bedroom. Some floors have a solely work spaces while others are solely residential or commercial.

A multipurpose building in the new tree exhibit at Lady Bird Johnson Wildower Center in Austin centered around a separation of spaces for large groups down to an individual. Program includes a rentable space, reading room, kitchen, public rest stop, and a research computer room. c o n c e p t : The large public space is raised above the ground plane to give expansive views and create a feeling of prominence. In contrast, the private spaces located in the grounded leg allow directed views and a quieter experience. the form mimics that of the surrounding landscape with a wide open knoll juxtaposing a shady treeline. an inset nook around at the farthest corner of the reading room recalls an afternoon spent propped under a large oak completely absorbed in a novel listening to the rustling leaves. a media center and catering kitchen round out the multipurpose lower level. 24

Beginning with a collaborative urban scheme highlighting the rough urban texture of north lamar. Individual projects emerge and link together to create a greater policy and projects that implement it. c o n c e p t : A mixed use building designed within a rugged natural landscape woven through a pedestrian friendly scheme for north lamar in austin, texas. The steel cage that makes up the upper portion of the tower houses shipping container residential units. The industrial grain of the transportable units draws a connection to the adjacent light rail, while the pedestrian access ramps wraps up through the minimalist structure. The path winds along a xeriscaping training center, event space, raised park level, and eventually leads to commercial offices and retail in the lower portion of the tower.

A collaborative studio bridging cultures and languages. This project is located in parc clichy-batignolles martin luther king in paris, france. The site sits between an industrial wasteland of metro rails and a pristine park surrounded by social housing. c o n c e p t : In order to encourage a pause from the urban rhythm, we bring green space in through the voids in the industrial fabric. We extend the amenity of the park horizontally through the residential half of the site and vertically on the edge of the rail to act as a filter allowing the context of the brute rail to be experienced through a screen and trellis. Exterior circulation creates a relaxing environment as residents take in fresh air and overlook the park on the way to their unit. Opportunities for view are introduced unexpectedly to create a sense of wonder when exploring the site. 36

World War 1 Memorial Lead Manager Team

In an open competition, we redesign Pershing Park in Washington, DC to incorporate a memorial to the soldiers of World War 1 and President Woodrow Wilson. The path of the soldier cuts through a stepped time line of the war’s milestones leading up to a pavilion. Through compression, the pavilion expresses the United States’ full involvement on the western front. The release from the war and out from under the pavilion recalls the innovation and progress that came after the tragedy. c o n t r i b u t i o n s : One of three researchers and designers on the project, I worked closely with Rob Rogers and Elizabeth Stoel to develop the layered concepts for the National World War One Memorial. Tasked specifically with historical milestones, site topography and circulation, and drawing production, I participated in the project from initial historical studies to competition board submission. 44

Preliminary design for an elementary and middle school near Drexel University’s main campus in Philadelphia. The two schools are housed in a single building with dual entrances to maintain the identities of Powel Elementary and Science Learning Academy Middle School. A central courtyard provides a play terrain outside the bounds of a typical play ground to continue the schools collaborative teaching methods. c o n t r i b u t i o n s : Our team tested and refined various program schemes to maximize accessed sunlight and outdoor learning terrace and play space. We corresponded closely with structural engineers, local landscape architects, mechanical engineers, and both school principals to stay informed on client needs and cost impacts of design moves. Rogers Partners was successful in winning the schematic design phase of the project. 52

The Metropolitan Montessori School on the upper west side of Manhattan is in the construction phase of an expansion into a neighboring historic building. The entry of the school extends through the ground level atrium punctuated by a three story staircase beginning on the second floor of the building. The stairway is defined by a perforated steel guardrail designed through an abstraction of students artwork. The design incorporates steel brackets to support the vertically cantilevering guardrail. c o n t r i b u t i o n s : The small project team worked closely with steel fabricators and the structural engineer to explore a series of perforation techniques with varying light and sturctural qualities. With the project architect, I produced construction documents and designs for the steel fabricator as well as marketing renderings for the Metropolitan Montessori principal. 60
