Margaret Mead Elementary School
Narative Margaret Mead is to replace an existing elementary school nestled between the nearby wetlands, a park, and the existing school which must stay open during construction. The concept began from our intial site visits. The concept grew from the inspiration and beauty of the PNW. Inspired by the morning light and the space under the tree canopy. The idea that Architecture like learning is about adventure and exploration. The idea for Mead is about dichotomy and dialouge. I believe that the Architecture can serve a purpose to bring about enthusiam for the exploration of different spaces as it pertains to the childs mind and scale. The goal of the architecture is to continue the work of Margaret Mead who was one of the forerunners on the topic of - “Nature Vs Nurture. NATURE : The physical enviornent within can serve as a playground for adventure and spacial awarness learning, with compression and expansion, the feeling of shelter and protection - openess and exposure. Architecture can teach us about how we feel. NURTURE : The nurture can be created through relathionships and dialouges with eachother to foster a welcoming place.

The Space Between The Trees A diachotomy between mass and void, light and dark, near and far. The architecture blends into the nearby wetlands, with the goal to creat visual excitment and depth, and to create a timely energy for childeren. The massing consist of public and support spaces to the south and classroom spaces to the north. The spaces are linked by a spine bisecting the building in two. The spine is represented in Green metal panel.

Salish Long House
The approach to designing a new addition for Astoria Middle school is a contextual analysis of place. Astoria and all of its charm can be described by its small scale and maritime/ industrial history. The concept for a new classroom addition is joinned by the idea that a central gathering spine will create a new public realm for all of Astoria Middle School. Early scandinavian settlers of Astoria including the natives have a history with the long house. The long house is a model used throughout the world with its form essentially remaining the same. They are long and narrow spaces used by the village as a central gathering space. Thus a new space is created that connects the existing building with the new classroom addition. The salish house and baskets are used as inspiration for patterning of the storefront. The goal is to create a building that resonates with the context of Astoria as well as the natural landscape.
