Digital Photography and the Web Everything you need to know about photography on the internet. Nick Pichierri 11/4/2013

How a Digital Camera Works Digital cameras take pictures by using pixels. Pixels are small squares of color that make up the picture you see on the computer screen. Usually, images on the internet have 72 pixels per square inch. The amount of pixels per square inch is called the resolution.

Ratio and Megapixels When talking about photos, ratio refers to the width and the height of an image. For example, a 4:3 ratio means that the width to height of the image is 4 to 3. A 4:3 ratio is shaped like a regular monitor. You can change the ratio of an image in a digital camera so that it will come out differently when you take the picture. The quality of the image determines the file size. So, in order to change the ratio go into the image quality tab, and it’s under menu. You will then be able to change the ratio that the camera will take. The quality and file size of the image is measured in megapixels. Megapixels are how much space it will take up on a hard-drive. You need to change the ratio of the picture so that it can fit on one computer screen.

How to Download Images From a Camera In order to download pictures from a camera, you first need to plug the camera into the computer. You then need to access the camera in whatever program you are trying to open the pictures in. For example, if you were trying to open pictures from a camera in photo-shop, you would go in file, open, and would then select the device.

Best Practice Its best to edit images so that they don’t take a long time to load. You should also make sure that it’s a decent size before you put it online. Remember that the resolution is usually 72, and it should be about 800 pixels wide and 700 pixels tall.

Save for Web There is a very useful tool in photoshop called “save for web. The save for web feature allows you to change the file type so that the file is much smaller. The smaller the file, the faster it will load on the internet. It also allows you to resize the image. Using this feature is very easy. Just click file, then save for web. You can then change the file type and image size easily.

Save for web I took a picture with a camera. At first, it was to big. So I sized it down to the 2nd picture.

Naming a digital image When naming an image online, remember these things. Include what the picture is of, when it was taken, and who took it. Use dashes so that you can see that the words are separated. If you don’t use dashes it will replace spaces with “%20” Also, don’t use slashes. (/)
