WINTER

RAIL & COACH TOURS Board the Rocky Mountaineer, Canada’s own VIA Rail or take one of our many coach tours to explore these spectacular mountains, lakes and glaciers. No visit to this area would be complete without travelling the Ice Fields Parkway one of the world’s most scenic routes. SELF DRIVE & MOTOR HOMES Alternatively you can enjoy the experience of fully independent travel using one of our car or motor home rentals. Take one of our pre arranged self drive programmes or let us customise an itinerary for you and pre book your accommodation along the way from our extensive range of hotels, wilderness lodges and ranches. WILDLIFE No introduction to Western Canada would be complete without mention of it’s fantastic opportunities for wild life and adventure experiences either on the west coast or at Churchill on the Hudson Bay.

2 • 1300 300 713 • momentotravel.com.au • reservations@momentotravel.com.au

Wildlife viewing along the west coast features bear, whales, orcas, otter, seals, dolphins, sea lions wolf, cougar, lynx and fox not to mention the eagles, hawks and the multitudes of sea birds of all varieties. Set in pristine wilderness surroundings many of our premium wild life viewing lodges are nevertheless remarkably easy to get to from the major cities, the last leg usually only involving a relatively short boat or float plane trip. Visits to the unique Hudson Bay area necessarily involve a longer journey either by train or plane there to see the iconic polar bears, beluga whales and perhaps to take a ride or overnight on the famous “Tundra Buggy”. ADVENTURE ACTIVITIES For the adventurous there is a world of choice from sea kayaking, heli hiking, mountain bike riding, canoeing, fishing and much more. WINTER TIME Finally your Canada visit does not necessarily have to be confined to the warmer months as we offer a fascinating Winter Canada programme for those who would like to experience a real snowy Christmas, go dog sledding and view the eerie Northern Lights.

Eastern Canada Eastern Canada comprises the central provinces of Ontario & Quebec together with the Atlantic provinces of Newfoundland, Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island and it’s relative closeness to Europe has endowed it with a rich cultural history handed down from the French, Scottish and English immigrants who settled this vast land. Toronto and its suburbs and satellites are the thriving centre of much of the business and manufacturing activities in Eastern Canada and, with its closeness to Niagara Falls is a must see destination while close by Ottawa and its fine parliamentary and public buildings are also a popular. No visit to Eastern Canada would be complete without exploring the St Lawrence river valley and the cities of Quebec and Montreal the latter the 2nd largest French speaking city in the world. Take the historical tours, visit the museums, admire the architecture, wine and dine and thus discover the vibrant French inspired culture of these remarkable cities. At the mouth of the mighty St Lawrence lies the Arcadian region of the Atlantic provinces with its mix of French, native and Scottish inhabitants with their own distinctive cultures alive among their traditional farming and fishing communities. The Maritime provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland offer truly majestic coastal scenery of rugged cliffs, vast unspoilt sandy beaches and there whales and huge icebergs are often seen. Here also are many national parks and nature preserves such as Parc de la Gaspesie, Cape Breton, the Cabot Trail offering breathtaking views and unrivalled opportunities for wild life viewing. Finally your Canada visit does not necessarily have to be confined to the warmer months as we offer a fascinating Winter Canada programme for those who would like to experience a real snowy Christmas, sleep in an “ice hotel” go dog sledding and view the eerie Northern Lights etc. 24 • 1300 300 713 • momentotravel.com.au • reservations@momentotravel.com.au

Alaska & The Yukon Today’s visitors to Alaska and the Yukon are drawn by the rugged beauty of these remote states best experienced by visits to the many inland and coastal national parks such as Denali, Glacier Bay, Kenai Fjords and Katmai with their spectacular fjords, mountains, lakes, glaciers, rivers and wide open spaces which abound with an amazing variety of wildlife. On land visitors can see bears, moose, caribou, elk, wolves, otters, Dall sheep etc, in the air an amazing variety of bird life, in the coastal waters whales, seals, sea lions, otter, dolphins and no visit to Alaska would be complete without a cruise in the sheltered waters of the famous ‘Inside Passage’ to view up close the many spectacular fjords and glaciers and the aquatic mammals and birds that live there. Alaska and the Yukon share a colourful gold rush era history remnants of which remain to enhance the visitors experience and pleasure. Names such as Skagway, Juneau, Dawson City, Whitehorse together with those of the White & Chilkoot trail and passes are forever associated with the 100 000 prospectors who flocked to the area 38 • 1300 300 713 • momentotravel.com.au • reservations@momentotravel.com.au

in the late eighteen nineties for the Klondike gold rush. The recreated famous saloons of yester year such as Diamond Tooth Gerties Casino & CanCan in Dawson City together with restored rail roads and river boats allow the modern visitor to experience the flavour of these past wild and adventurous times. The wide open spaces, lakes and rivers of the Alaska and the Yukon can be considered as the last frontier offering many opportunities for the active adventurer such as hiking, canoe camping trips on the mighty Yukon river, sea kayaking in the fjords and deep sea fishing etc as well for the more relaxed stays in remote and peaceful wilderness lodges far from civilisation many with only air or water access. Finally visits to Alaska and the Yukon do not necessarily have to be confined to the warmer months as there unique opportunities in winter for the active traveller such as dog sledding or snow mobiling and this area is among the most reliable for experiencing the eerie never to be forgotten Northern Lights best seen in the late autumn, winter and early spring months.

Pass by Five Fingers Lighthouse and a large sea lions haulout made from dozens of rocky islets. Day 7: Ford’s Terror / Endicott Arm Cliff-walled fjords sliced into the mountainous mainland are widely acclaimed as the most beautiful in the whole state. Explore this majestic Fjord Terror by kayak or skiff. View rugged ice-covered mountains gleaming high overhead and a glacier that actively calves into the ice-filled fjord of Endicott Arm. Toast your voyage with a festive Farewell Dinner. Day 8: Juneau – Disembark Gather for breakfast before returning to historic Juneau. HERITAGE LUXURY CRUISE: Cruise scenic waterways aboard replica coastal steamer ”SS Legacy” with glaciers & wildlife viewing in Glacier Bay National Park, History presentations from expert guests and onboard legacy guides. Many shore excursions: • Tour Sikta’s Russian and Petersberg’s Scandinavian heritage. • Haines’s Fort William Seward • Tlingit culture at Wrangell • White Pass & Yukon Railroad and 1920s street car in Skagway

When the Klondike Gold Rush began in 1897, Alaska was a land of opposites – hardship and promise, good fortune and bad luck, lawlessness and justice – and Soapy Smith, con man extraordinaire, saw opportunity. Unlike your journey, Soapy traveled with his own “law and order society” and was thrown out of towns, welcomed in saloons, and his name was legendary. The present slips away and the past emerges as you sail out of Ketchikan, through what is now the Tongass National Forest. Days 2-6 You’ll meet any number of fascinating characters during your passage through time sailing in and out of ports strategic to prospectors or that served as launch points for pioneering naturalists. Cruise “inside routes” long ago plied by Russian sea otter hunters, dock in towns that flourished as fur trading centers, and visit forts and landmarks where history was forever changed. With your crew of scallywags and hooligans, stagger back to the vessel’s Pesky Barnacle Saloon, and imagine the revelry of the day. Trusting your captain to seek out the best opportunities for wilderness and wildlife viewing, you are sure to find it along the shores of Chichagof Island and in the northern whale waters of Icy Strait. Lounging sea lions, gentle humpbacks, and flocks of resident seabirds – murrelets, puffins, and black-legged kittiwakes.

Glaciers unfold front and center in Glacier Bay National Park, and the dramatic 15,000-foot peaks of the Fairweather Range drape the skyline before your sail toward Lynn Canal, North America’s deepest fjord.

Skagway Rail Days 7-8 Spend your last day in the Gold Rush town of Skagway – the setting for Jack London’s Call of the Wild – and in Haines, an integral native trade center. Tour an old fort, visit a museum, stroll along wooden boardwalks, and ride a narrow gauge railway 3,000 feet up and around cliff-hanging turns for a stunning panorama of glaciers, gorges, mountains, and waterfalls. Exhilarated, join your captain at the Farewell Dinner and close the evening with a photographic recap by your legacy team. After breakfast, say farewell to the crew and disembark for your transfer to the Juneau airport.

No visit to Canada or Alaska would be complete without seeing the famous Northern Lights, the Aurora Borealis, which have their origin in solar flares creating gigantic electrical storms in the earths magnetic fields over the North Pole. These flares glow or ripple across the night sky and billow with mysterious curtains of rainbow colours from white, green and yellow to pink and blue - a never to be forgotten spectacle. The Northern Lights are active all year round and the better viewing times are in Autumn/Winter/Spring as it is too light in the Summer months, with winter offering the greatest opportunities as there is so little daylight in the higher latitudes of Northern Canada and Alaska. Momento offers a wide range of tours from specialist operators at destinations designed to maximise your viewing experience. The following tours have been selected from the wide range available – please contact us if more or less days or an alternative destination is preferred.

United States of America

All though winter clothing is included whilst at hotels and when viewing travellers should nevertheless come suitably dressed for arrival and departure in winter conditions and be aware that, as Aurora viewing is heavily dependent on weather conditions, sightings cannot be guaranteed at all times. In addition to your hotel accommodation we include hire of winter clothing, transfers and most meals except where indicated otherwise. Gratuities to staff and participation in optional day time activities are excluded.
