Slovenia The Karst region is a unique phenomena occurring in almost half of Slovenia. Utilised for the 8000 caving options on offer, this area is celebrated for the many vineyards offering Teran wine, prosciutto and other local produce. Also here you’ll find the 400 year old Lipica Stud. Its history abounds with the emperors and rulers of Europe, today it is a successful classic horse riding school.

Why visit Slovenia? Ljubljana with its cultural and cafe ambience, bridges and castle. The second largest city is Maribor, a friendly university town at the foot of the Alps on the Drava river and home to the oldest vineyard in Europe. Thirty minutes away is Ptuj, the oldest city in Slovenia dating back to the Stone age. It offers beautiful sights like Ptuj Castle.

River
Tucked into a curve in the Adriatic alongside Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia with Trieste literally just down the road, Vienna and Rome thirty minutes away by air, and Venice, Salzburg and Munich a few hours by road, Slovenia is thoroughly European. Indeed, with its castles, crafts, mountains, caves, lakes, ports, culture, fertile farms and annual jazz festival this boutique country is very much Europe in microcosm. In the capital, Ljubljana, head for the old town and pull up a chair at one of the cafes, teeming with people, beside the river. The sun falls on cobbled streets, quaint bridges, old churches shaded by spreading trees and the river glides so quietly that you hardly notice it. It is people-watching heaven. But Ljubljana is not Slovenia’s trump card. The best of the country can be found in the unspoilt rural areas, particularly in the mountains abutting the Austrian border. The tallest mountains have a covering of snow and the meadows are a riot of colour: crocuses, dandelions, even the odd wild strawberry, peeping through the grass. Clear rivers wind through dappled valleys, past fields of cows that look so happy you expect them to burst into song.

Is there a friendlier country in Europe than Slovenia? For the first-time visitor to Slovenia, the uncomplicated warmth of the welcome makes an indelible impression. Slovenia is a small country with a big heart.

Drive to Lake Bled, probably the best-known tourist attraction in Slovenia, dominated by an 11th-century castle perched on a rocky outcrop like a brooding bird of prey. You can walk around the lake in just over an hour but why not take a few hours and stop at a cafe, then take a boat across to the island in the middle of the lake, where a flight of steps leads to the tiny Church of the Assumption of Mary. If you are lucky there might even be a wedding happening while you are there.
Olimje
Travel through majestic, glacial alpine valleys and perhaps spend a night at a tourist farm – an unforgettable experience. In the traditional farmhouses with their painted beehives and carefully tended vegetable gardens, there is a vivid sense of an unchanging rural community rooted in family life. The mountain scenery is glorious but the human landscape also tugs strongly at the heartstrings. Slovenia is that sort of place.
Slovenia is home to around five hundred castles, manors and ruins. Some restored and some converted to hotels, such as the charming Otocec Castle located on an island in the middle of the Krka river near the Croatian border. The Eastern countryside is also well known for its health spas and outdoor wellbeing.
Climate: June through September can be expected to be warm and sunny and the other months cooler with winter sports a speciality in the Julian Alps.
Currency: Euro. Visas: Current Australian passport holders do not need visas for stays less than 90 days.
Events & Festivals: Each year Slovenia offers a wealth of cultural events, festivals and sporting events too numerous to list here. See www.slovenia.info for more details on events such as the famous, annual Maribor Music Festival. Slovenia also has many historic towns, each of which have their own unique festivals.
Food & Wine: Lovers of good food and wine are well catered for via Slovenian regional “Wine Routes” connecting local vineyards and restaurants. Activities: To better enjoy the beautiful
Postojna Cave is a network of 20km of passages, galleries and chambers. It is the largest cave in the “classic karst” and the most visited show cave in Europe.

What to see & do Sightseeing Slovenia abounds with areas of great scenic beauty such as the lakes at Bled and Bohinj, the alpine regions of the Julian Alps in the Triglav National Park also including the Soca River Valley. Natural features such as the famous cave systems in the Karst region at Postojna and Skocjan attract many thousands of visitors a year. Castles and historic towns and villages too numerous to mention are found all over Slovenia and many are featured in our excursion and tour programmes.
Food & Wine The delights of Slovenian cooking, hidden in old recipes, are available at almost every turn. Food with tradition can be seen in Slovenia’s many fine restaurants, family inns, at special events called osmice and rural experiences. Slovenia produces 80 to 100 million litres of wine annually of which some 70% are white and 30% red and these are known for their quality and taste as almost 70% fulfil the criteria for premium wines.
Farm stays allow visitors to see and experience the real Slovenia and the stud farm at Lipica with its famous Lipizzaner horses is especially popular.
Sport & Active Holidays Slovenia’s abundant green open spaces are a paradise for sports fanatics and active holiday makers alike.
Festivals & Events Slovenia has many local and international festivals every year and as well as the outstanding Christmas festivals across the country there are well known events such as Maribor’s chamber music concerts in September and the Ljubljana Summer Festival which each year includes from 70 to 80 concerts and opera and ballet performances. Highlights of previous Ljubljana festivals include the Bolshoi ballet, Tchaikovsky’s opera Eugene Onegin, the orchestra and choir of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the London Symphony Orchestra and performances by Russian Cossack dancers to name but a few.
The exceptionally diverse landscape, with its countless sites of natural beauty, its well maintained paths and trails and affordable hostels, mountain huts and campsites make it an ideal choice for biking and hiking holidays. Slovenia’s other summer activities include water sports, rafting, canoeing and sailing and each year there are international rowing regattas on Lake Bled and active holiday makers can also enjoy tennis, golf and fishing. Winter sports are also extremely popular and are exceptionally well catered for in the Kranjska Gora region of the Julian Alps.

Why visit Croatia?
Zagreb a vibrant city of 800 000, the capital of Croatia. The city is a centre for higher education and also boasts a charming medieval old city with cobbled streets.
Travel a little further and discover another Mediterranean jewel – a world of rugged beauty and vast contrast – some even call it the next “Riviera”. With over 1200 islands just off its coastline, it is of course Croatia, and what is known as the Dalmatian Coast.
hUNGARY
Why not extend your Slovenian holiday and take a voyage of discovery through this beautiful part of Europe. The Dalmatian Coast has all the advantages of the Mediterranean, but without a lot of the hype of Greece or Italy. Croatia is definitely my tip for “the” place to visit for your next laidback, relaxing vacation – not to mention a fantastic history lesson thrown in. Take a cruise through any or all of the gorgeous islands dotted along the Dalmatian coast or drive yourself and explore the inland areas where castles, churches, shrines and monasteries intermingle with national parks and vineyards. If you love Italian food and try to live by a Mediterranean diet, rich in salads, olive oil and seafood – then you will love the food in Croatia. The choices are endless, and the quality and quantity just amazing. We work closely with many excellent operators in Croatia so you can feel totally confident that we are the perfect partner to assist you with your travel plans. Our mission is to promote the beauty and virtues of this gorgeous country and its fascinating neighbours, to offer you exceptional travel experiences by representing the best products and services available and provide personal service above and beyond your expectations through the depth of our knowledge and the friendliness of our staff. Call us – you will not be disappointed!
Climate: June through September can be expected to be warm and sunny with the other months cooler especially inland.
Currency: Croatia has its own currency
Ston, a small town with a wellkept secret – a city wall hundreds of years old which is the longest complete fortress system around a town in Europe – and the second in the world. Well worth a visit.
but the Euro is accepted everywhere.
Visas: Current Australian passport holders do not need visas for stays of up to 90 days.
Food & Wine: Croatia has it own food specialities, good wines and famous spirits and food and wine festivals occur throughout the year. Seafood and lamb dishes are particularly plentiful and paprika spice cevapcici are ubiquitous.
Bosnia & Herzegovina
The famous Zinfandel grape variety has its origins on the Dalmatian coast whilst “Rakia”, flavoured spirits, is a national drink in Croatia as well as adjacent countries. Rakia, frequently home made, comes in various flavours and styles and is made by fermenting fruit such as grapes, peaches or damson plums etc the latter well known as “Slivovitz”.
Ston
Activities: Active holiday makers will find
Dubrovnik The World Heritage listed old city of Dubrovnik with its impressive walls and towers are one of Dubrovnik’s most photographed features. Stretching over 2km they are a “must do” for all visitors.
the Adriatic Islands offer ideal conditions for hiking and cycling and outstanding opportunities for wind and kite surfing with the beach at Bol on the island of Brac being a mecca for water sports enthusiasts.
Highlight: On Korčula in the town of the same name they claim this to be the birth place of Marco Polo and will show you the Marco Polo house which inconveniently for this legend is thought to have been built at least a century after his demise. Events: Croatia is home to a number of events each year from music, flower, food & wine festivals to boat shows and annual sporting events such as world cup skiing.

What to see & do
Coastal Cruises
Sightseeing
Its sparkling blue waters, golden beaches and beautiful climate make cruising the Dalmatian coast and islands the number one holiday choice for visitors to Croatia.
Croatia was part of the maritime trading empire of Venice for hundreds of years and has an even longer history stretching back to Greek and Roman times.
This glamorous coastline with its thousands of islands and picturesque towns and villages offers an unparalleled range of sights, experiences and activities.
Best reached by car visitors can admire the extensive and beautifully preserved and lived in legacy of coastal towns and villages replete with Venetian inspired churches, bell towers, palaces, plazas, houses and fortifications as well as outstanding Roman remains such as Diocletian’s Palace at Split, the forum at Zadar and the colosseum at Pula.
Dine under the stars at harbourside restaurants, explore the historic sites, enjoy the many water sports on offer or simply swim in the turquoise waters and relax on its sandy beaches - the choice is yours. Beyond Slovenia and its sister company The Small Ship Adventure Company specialise in cruises and charters in the Mediterranean and along the Dalmatian coast - see page 42 onwards.
Sport & Active Holidays Croatia is a must go to destination for all water sports enthusiasts especially for sailing, parasailing, canoeing, snorkelling and rafting and active holiday makers can also enjoy tennis and fishing. Biking and hiking holidays are also popular and well catered for especially on the many larger islands where vehicular traffic is limited on non existent.
The Istrian peninsula in the north with its popular coastal towns of Rovijn, Pula and Porec show the continuing cultural influence of Italy while inland hill towns such as Motovun and Opatija with it’s Austrian architectural legacy are especially attractive. The Dalmatian coast with its well known cities of Dubrovnik and Split need little introduction but the wealth of lesser known coastal towns and villages will delight the visitor who takes the trouble to go island hopping such as on page 44. Croatia has a wealth of natural beauty with 8 Unesco listed National Parks of which the best known incorporates spectacular Plitvice Lakes as featured on pages 24.
Festivals & Events As well as Advent, Christmas and New Year festivals in towns and cities across the country Croatia holds many local and international exhibitions, concerts and events such as the Dubrovnik Summer Games, Split Summer, Rab Fjera, Pula and Motovun Film Festivals, or the Špancirfest in Varaždin.
