I believe, a heavy inclination to innovative design culture is the key to building better living environments.

I believe Landscape Architecture is to explore the past and create a future rich with sustainable ideals and

I believe there is much to be discovered in finding the mutual bounds of humans and their environment.

I believe the field of Landscape Architecture is a craft based heavily on serving our future and current needs whilst sustaining the inherited natural landscapes.

STUDIO PROJECTS Design - What I do

Suture

Public Realm Proposal for Badgerys Creek The site was chosen based on its size and urban context as well as location within proposed transportation system. The site is in the middle of existing agriculture land, and a proposed university campus and campus neighborhood. Yet the site is currently ill-defined, and facing the threat of inefficient use as well as isolation from the surrounding areas, especially the connection between residential area and university. According to the scale comparison in Sydney region, the site has potential to serve the local community within whole Badgerys Creek area. In regional context, there is potential to recreate the space into a public realm that can involve surrounding areas’ characteristics and provide certain attraction for local community.

Aim of Design The site is designed to be a multi-functional public realm, where the surrounding area’s characteristics can be involved and used as design prograns. At such location, the site is expected to serve the majority of community in the whole Badgerys Creek area.

Mixed function & characters Efficient Usage

Theoretical Framework This design project was inspired by the theory of everyday urbanism. A place can be meaningful when its physical configuration can meet the needs for human activities. The most efficient way to attract people to use a space is to provide the functions or contents of design to meet people’s daily requirements. This proposal creates a new public realm that will meet local communities’ everyday living requirement with better access and opportunityfor activities.

Design Process

Master Plan

The concept of the design is the metaphor of ‘suture’. With an abstract needle of string, agriculture, education and community will be connected and combined, while meeting the aim of having everyday engagement with local residents in Badgerys Creek. Hence the design elements will be directly related to people’s general everyday living, including access, security, food, exercise and other social activities. The concept of ‘suture’ will also apply in a physical sense. A recreated access system will assure efficient and secured path for residents, and the design programs will be the key nodes along the route of travel. The design starts with the existing spatial opportunities. After marking the key portal points between each space, suture line is used to provide direct connection to the spaces. Within the site, there is another suture line to be a circuit loop. Along two types of suture line, the design programs, according to density of usage everyday, will be placed on the access system with consideration of site condition.

Spatial Opportunity

Seating with natural shade: Timber paved seats with meadows and trees planted in the middle. The sides of the seats can form different chances of socialising. The future users can pick the side for different views or way to socialise.

Farm market/ Cafe facility: The facility is used for both selling fresh product from the nearest community farm and outdoor cafe/store retails. The simple structure is flexible for multi-purpose usage, based on seasons change over a year time.

Montage 1: Community Farm + Market/ Cafe area Outdoor Sculpture Installation: Timber paved seats with meadows and trees planted in the middle. The sides of the seats can form different chances of socialising. The future users can pick the side for different views or way to socialise.

Electrical tranparent information board: The information board will display the information, which is related to people’s everyday living. This will include:community events, employment, sales and other daily- required content. The information board is expected to be the internet screen in outdoor space with lighting during night time for pedestrian security and extention of this space usage.

Nostalgic

Proposal for Newcastle Railway Corridor This project focuses on the transformation of inner city urban area of Newcastle, in response to changing urban dynamics. Newcastle is a city with enrich historical heritages, representing few certain stages of development in Australian history. The design was aiming to focus on reflecting the history of Newcastle through the new light rail and the chosen transect. Meanwhile the sire is designed to be more pedestrian friendly, allowing a more flexible transport transit.

Experience

Ultimo Linear Park - Path, Portal, Place This project focuses on recreation of inner city linear space with proposed new development in Ultimo. This linear site is going from side of central station to powerhouse museum. Then the concept of path, portal and place is adapted as basic guidance of design. Based on research study and site analysis, a new pedestrian system is created to meet the demands of both internal and external connections. For internal connection, visual interaction and various experience is created by varies levels of pedestrian walkway. For external connection, density of population movement is considered for site entry and exits.

On the side of commercial buildings, the middle lower level is designed to be a lawn area with gentle slopes. And the buildings can provide shades to the middle lawn area. Along the side of the buildings, two walkways are designed to create a fast connection between the pedestrians and main buildings. At certain entry to buildings, sequence of walkways will be set up to connect the walkway along two sides.

17 Experience

While reaching the open space with portal to external streets, the main walkway is down in the middle, following the slope of lawn. This will give the users a more clear direction onto the walkway to ensure a more efficient movement. At the same time, the slope of lawns can provide more open rest areas.

OTHER PROJECTS Technic - How I see

Graphic Design

University of NSW 65th Anniversary The project was to design logo for UNSW 65th anniversary. The design is based on the theory of different elements combination. The sequence of logos was designed based on types of spatial relationship, colour and shapes. Though the process, I further discovered the technics of how to use a systematic graphic way to express an idea. The project also pushed my skills of InDesign into a better level.

Documentation

Hand drawing + Powells Creek CAD drawing Those practices helped to see a design in a more technical way, in terms of transferring and testing an idea with realistic construction. The practices included grading practice, basic drawing knowledge for varied sets of documentation. From the projects, I learnt how design is completed into a certain level of details for further construction. Also the practices pushed my AutoCAD to a higher level.
