This portfolio records the main works I did in first semester of my one-year exchange program in Cracow Unversity of Technology (Politechinika Krakowska) in Poland. Since I'm in the progress of my exchange , I can't really give a integrating summary of my whole exchange study life in Cracow. But what I can be sure is that the first six months of the exchange definitely was the most impressive time in my life so far. It's not only because study life here but also the friends I've met here, the landscape I've seen here. However, I miss Canton so much especially my familly, my friends in China, for sure, as well as Chinese cuisine. Studying aboard gives me a brand new perspective about China and the world, about the humanity and civilization in differet background. It teaches me how to be a more comprehensive person and how to chase my dreams. Written in Cracow where is 8280km away from Canton. 4

residential building complex design The site of my residential buiding complex design is located in the south part to the Krakow city center, the south coast of the Wisla River, which is right beside the Wilga River and sharing the huge greenery areas of the riverside with other parts of Rondo Matecznego-Wilga. Nowadays, there are several abandoned factories on the site while there are plenty of residential areas nearby the site. The main task of my residential building complex design is not only to provide a integrated livable residence community with well completed supporting facilities but also to introduce a new urban landscape for Krakow city.

Type 2 - Balcony
There are two different types of windows and two different balconys introduced into facade design in order to make the facade more rythmical. Through making those different types/sizes of windows and balconys arrange into a staggered formation, the residents can get more visual communication with each other on the balcony .

Appartment Types Openings in the staircase slabs allow more light into the space and keeping the transparency level high, making it easy for neighbors to overview who is available for interaction. The building have four different apartment types, residing a diverse community within the same envelope. All staircases lead up to their own roofgarden and each stair wells has its own trapezoidal greenery open space which allows residents share this space as a public balcony. 16 residential building complex design architecture portfolio 2013-2014
USER GROUP The residential complex will be developed to ac- commodate different types of families and people. This paragraph illustrates the strategy related to dif- ferent apartment types, which will oblige various user needs. The strategy is used to accommodate the different user needs. Three bedroom apartment The typical family in Denmark with two adults and two children. Big two bedroom apartment Two adults and a teenager. Small two bedroom apartment Two students or a little family with a small child. Two/One bedroom apartment Two student, a couple or a single person. ZHE ZENG

S U S T A I NA B L E D E S I GN STRATEGIES In order to reach sustainable architecture the gen- eral definition of sustainability needs to be trans- lated to practical means. The following design strategies are relevant for this project.
20 residential building complex design architecture portfolio 2013-2014
PASSIVE SOLAR GAIN
NATURAL VENTILATION
Passive solar gain will be used to maintain interior thermal comfort throughout the sun’s daily and an- nual cycles whilst reducing the requirement for ac- tive heating and cooling systems. The strategy will be to keep out the summer sun and let the winter sun in.
Natural ventilation will be used to ventilate the building. The building will be designed to use posi- tive pressure on the windward side and low pres- sure on the leeward side, which creates a pressure difference to allow airflow through the building.
Design Parameters • Orientation of windows • Glazing solutions • Shading, overhangs etc. • Window area/room volume • Solar transmissivity of glass • Window heat loss coefficient • Thermal mass of the room • Control strategy for heating system • Occupancy profile • Floor plan zoning, based on heating needs
PV SYSTEMS A photovoltaic system will use the solar radiation for electricity. The system will be integrated togeth- er with the architectural strategy.
MATERIALS Heavy materials like bricks or concrete will be con- sidered for thermal mass. If walls are built with heavy materials then they will retain heat and let it out slowly. Some walls or floors inside will be built out of lighter materials to balance out the effects of the heavier materials. Factors, which will be considered when choosing the final building materials: • Humidity, Rainfall frequency and intensity, Flood • Freeze/thaw cycles • Snow loads/snow pack • Thermal mass, Insulation, Ventilation • Color • Shading, Radon
Benefits with natural ventilation: • Cost savings as the need of artificial cooling strate gies is diminished or eliminated • Environmentally friendly as energy requirement is diminished • Healthier indoor climate for the occupants as air quality is good
BUILDING FORM & Location
The locations specific environmental impacts will be considered during the design process Design features, which will be formed in order to suit a set environment: • Height of building (internal) • Type of materials • Number of rooms in dwelling • Amount of openings • Shape of roof Important facts to consider include: • Surrounding trees/plants • Exposure to sun • Temperature and humidity • Direction of sun • Wind direction and prevailing breezes
Orientation
The orientation of the building will be focused on the south to gain heat from the sun. Window areas will be bigger in the southern end of the building.
Shading
Passive solar shading will be used during the sum- mer time to remove the need for cooling. The shading will be both fixed and adjustable

composition in open landscape This project locates in Kamieniolom Bodzow, Krakow. Bodzow used to be a small village, now housing area, attached to Krakow in 1941 as cadastral district XXIX. It was first mentioned in the twelfth century. The estate has retained the original urban layout and nineteenth century road system. The most valuable monument of incentives is the Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows founded in 1637. The highest elevation in the area is hill Solnik originally from neighboring non-existent today in most Bodzow hills and Mount St. Anne destroyed by exploitation of limestone. The hill is home for many valuable and interesting plant species such as Pulsatilla pratensis and stemless carline thistle .
22 composition in open landscape architecture portfolio 2013-2014
Our task is to transform the abandoned valley of Kamieniolom Bodzow into a public landscape park so that it can activate the whole site for a better using and better protection . In my group of this project, I saw seval completely different attitudes to this site. The site, as for me, contains a big potential to be developed into a simple, serene and comfortable landscape public park. In order to repect the original texture and remain the most staight and clear feeling of the site, my strategy is to design couples of simple, clean and delicate landscape public facilities and intallations that can strengthen the rough texture of the site through comparison while protecting the original biological structure of Bodzow.

ECOLOGY AND ENVIRIONMENTAL PROTECTION Poland has adopted the environmental standards of the European Union or stricter in the run-up to membership. Monitoring stations in every part of the city constantly watch concentration of all principal pollutants in atmosphere. Air pollution has stayed consistently low in the recent decade. Forced industrialization under the communist rule degraded the environment in many parts of Poland, including Krakow. Since 1990s the government introduced strict environmental regulations and has been able to enforce them. However ,some areas are very problematic. For example, district Wilga, located in the south part of Krakow city . 20 percent of the area are parts of the industrial and MPK HQ.

1)South-eastern region can be calledresidential. There are 2 shares engaged in high-rise buildings and one occupied by private houses. This part includes three biological areas. Green land existing now,but whole area is under the plan of estate constructing (will be the residential area in the future).there are good conditions of public service . You can identify the material prosperity of local residents by the presence of a huge store “Second hand”, that you have possibility to see on the map. 2)South-western part is the most prosperous area of Wilga. It is included 2 residential areas, 1 biological area and sufficiently large are of public service (there are school, kinder garden and playgrounds ). There are well-kept grounds and good roads conditions. 3) Finally we start to research the third and the most degrading area – the north area of Wilga. The east part of that occupied by 2 residential parts , 3 industrial parts and 2 public service parts (including center of bus interchanges and tram lines ). The west part should be a parkland, But we found 3 fenced parts where entry is prohibited. However the fact that they are used as a place for waste.

Features in landuse: industrial; in users: workers. This arae is occupied by several factories and MPK HQ. Problems: - Water pollution caused by factories - Air pollution caused by factories and bus interchanges and tram lines - Noise pollution from industrial area and traffic - Disordered space along the riverside occupied by garbage from industrial area - Inaccessibility of crossing river - Isolated and unwelcome open space along the river - Lack of greenary penetration - Unfriendly public facilities Interactions: - Replace the industrial area with recreations, eliminating the negatives brought by factories and creating a more livable and more friendly environment. - Restore the green area along the rivers - Improve the accessibility of entering the open space - Install more public facilities

Features in landuse: residential; in users: residents. Put part1 and part2 together and see them as a whole community, because of their similarities in functions. - Lack of visual connection between two banks - Unsafety caused by unorganized green area along the river - Low utilization of open space along the river - Inaccessibility of crossing river - Lack of greenary penetration -Insufficient social infrastructure, such as parking lots, dustbin, lights Interactions: - Reorganize the green area along the river - Equip the neighbourhoods with more social infrastucture - Improve the visual connection between two banks - Installing bridges between to strengthen the relationship of neighbourhoods on the two sides. Conclusions: Features in Wilga: riverbanks. We should take advantage of the river to improve the environment condition of Wilga by restoring, redeveloping, reorganizing the spaces along the river.

The North part: 1.Solid and liquid waste is an expensive and technically complex production. Elimination of the processes themselves are governed by very strict rules. Some of the waste is burned at very high temperatures, in such circumstances, the complex molecules of toxic substances are converted into neutral. It means that each material must be liquidated by the way most suitable to him.So the first and the most important step that can make government is - identify a variety of household and building waste occurring in this area and its impact on the environment. 2.We do not have information on the percentage amount of harmful substances-released into the atmosphere and also about the presence of dust collection and gas cleaning equipment in beer factory of Wilga, we can not determine the damage done by this factory. However, except for installation of treatment facilities on pipes of various factories, also practiced fencing industrial area by vegetation. 3.Creation of the bridges project with the aim to make crossing river more comfortable, and provide project’s realisation in life. 4. Organising space for playground-sand also placement of benches and arbors (people can spend more time outside the home in a green park district). Creation presentable kind of greenery. 5. Installing sound-reflecting barriers along roads, preventing ingress of noise into residential areas. The south part: Provide some events to equip sidewalks by lanterns. Creation of the bridges project with the aim to make crossing river more comfortable , and provide project’s realisation in life. The making of repairing work on the damaged areas of the road.
Proposition: The most problematic area is the greyfields along the river. - Firstly introduce greenway into Wilga to improve its popularity and accessibility. - Secondly reorganize the vegetation to strengthen the visual connections between two banks. - Thirdly install public facilities into the field. In terms of the south part (part1, part2) -Provide more space for social activities to create a harmonious neighborhood. As for the north part (part3) - It’s better to remove all the factories to eliminate the effect on ecvironment. -The west part is under construction. And the real estate developer should spare the green space along the river to keep a integrated ecosystem among Wilga. ZHE ZENG

FOREWORD
WSTĘP
Six months ago, the distance between Europe and I actually is only as thin as a piece of paper or a photo. But if we measure the thickness of these sheets of paper with space and time, it will be 8280km * 14h. That’s why I prefer saying that the reason why I flew over a quarter of the Earth to Europe is to drill through the distance of those photos and books to feel a alive Europe in person rather than saying I came here only for exchange program. When half of the one-year exchange program has passed, I look back and check those photos i took, I just can’t help to have a deep feeling in my mind that these architectures are much more than a picture or a book for me, they’re like another world named 8280 * 14, which western people will get the same feeling when they think about the oriental world filled with unknown and mysterious. As a ordinary architecture student, I can’t really say that I have any unique opinions or perspectives of those famous architectures in Europe. However, there’s one thing I can definitely make sure: The emotion I had when I pressed the shutter in front of or inside of those architectures is very unique. I can not use any precise words to describe this feeling, but if we measure the feeling with space and time again, it would be back to that digit---8280km * 14h.
Sześć miesięcy temu, odległość między Europą a moim światem była rzeczywiście tak duża jak arkusz papieru lub fotografia. Jednak jeśli zmierzyć wielkość tychże formatów przestrzenią i czasem, będzie to 8280 km * 14godz .
