The new museum preserves the existing buildings, the British Art Center parking lot r and landscape; the site provides a resistance floo from which a string of new gallery spaces round g ground floor sprout and graft. The gallery interior becomes a transmogrification between rich memories of domestic space and the monolithic anonymous white galleries. It is between the strange and the familiar that the new museum finds its new ground.

Providence Urban Redevelopment The abandoned highway I-94 leaves a scar across the city of Providence. Continuing the interest about urban void and working with the existing urban infrastructure, the fourth core studio, an introduction to the planning and architecture of cities, concerns two distinct scales of operation: that of the neighborhood and that of the dwellings, the institutional and commercial building types that typically contribute to neighborhood. Issues of community, group form, and the public realm, as well as the formation of public space, blocks, streets, and squares are emphasized.

The final proposal examines the significant yet neglected history of Providence River to release its latent capacity to generate vibrant urban space. Working closely with the School of Forestry and Environment, the architecture proposal is constantly tested against urban design criteria and urban ecological strategies; urban ecological pulsing concepts are deployed to allow the new development to respond and adapt to the changing climate and economic environment.

Archipuncture DĂşn Laoghaire
Working with the idea of redundancy and excess in our culture, the studio asks the question why is the ordinary undervalued in favour of the novel, and why are new interventions built on the premise that complexity replaces richness. With a precision of thought and economy of means, and to make minimum interventions to maximum effect, the modest bath house/culture center is built with concrete recycled from the ruins found at the 19th century Victorian bath house. Strategically placed at a half mile length of Dublin coastline which stretches from the Joyce Tower to the West pier of Dun Laoghaire Harbour, the artist residency combines the private narrative with unexpected adjacencies of public use, users, and activities in an attempt to promote the role of the architect in the making of public space from ordinary things.

Suzhou Creek Landscape [completed] The Suzhou Creek redevelopment provides Shanghai with a rare chance to create a city-scale spine of recreation. The design approach primarily seeks to make the passage along the Creek edge continuous, and proposes connections to various other parks within reach of the Creek. The project includes the re-development of green-belt between the adjacent high density housing development and the riverside road. Rather than remaining a passive buffer, can this green become an active linear park which encourages residents to get out of their enclaves and partake in a new wider community? If programs of sports, leisure and passive green are incorporated, then the park can appeal to a broad range of users. By connecting these three programs along highly legible paths, the ten 200m long parks can be understood as one 2km park. This single park can provide 2km of rubber jogging track, with periodic exercise circuit apparatus, basketball courts, badminton and other sports plazas. The park can provide 2km of socially active paths connecting tea houses, pavilions, and small plazas and gathering areas. Another 2km of quiet green experience can also be established. Where these three programmatic threads cross, or intertwine, areas of greater complexity and density emerge. To provide a place of more extreme escape, an elevated walkway is also provided. It passes through the canopy of existing trees and provides a

Suzhou High School [completed] This state school is situated within the park belt of the new Suzhou Hi-tech district. It is split into two halves to allow continuity of the park. To the west is the boarding facility for 900 students and staff. To the east are teaching facilities including library, sports hall, and administration building. Each of the two parts has a central connecting to the mountain park: one a triangular view corridor, the other a rectilinear space. Both are lined by rows of large crowned trees. These spaces are charged by both nature and the institution. They provide a space capable of embodying and expressing the institution of

Jinqiao Ramp Restaurant [completed] Pudong, Shanghai. The post-industrial landscape imagines a new future without automobiles. A vertical car park has recently been converted to a boutique hotel, leaving the car ramp redundant. Working with the existing context, the new restaurant finds its spacial identity from this abandoned concrete car ramp built in the early 90s. The project is situated opposite a planned exhibition centre and adjacent to an industrial compound undergoing gentrification as a creative industry site. The proposal converts the ramp into a restaurant-bar-cafĂŠ but keeps the cars circulating down the ramp under the restaurant to a basement car park. In order to keep the ramp pure and open, a new detached building is designed to house the kitchen and service. A cafĂŠ is designed for the ground floor of the new building to provide the street corner
