FROM THE DESK OF DAVID C. JOSWICK We are excited to say that we have purchased a 14,000 square foot facility in Maitland. Once renovated, this new building will allow us to undertake all grief and wish services offered by our organization in an efficient and effective way, as well as to offer additional programs and activities for the children and families we serve. Building New Hope, a once-in-a-lifetime capital campaign, is designed to help us raise money to renovate this new building. We encourage you to help us achieve this goal by providing your support. There will be opportunities to give on every level, from a personalized brick in our “Path to Hope, to sponsoring a support or activity room, all the way up to naming rights of the building itself! The first $300,000 in donations will even be matched by a local foundation. Consider asking your employer if they would provide matching funds for your donation, or maybe you know of a foundation or potential donor we could contact. Every dollar helps! Sincerely, David C. Joswick Executive Director

WISHES GRANTED en is only 4 1/2 years old and he’s had a rough time due to M-CMTC, BEN’S STORY a medical condition that causes blockages in the brain, seizures and asthma. Ben loves cars, planes and trucks, but especially trains. Since he read Chris Van Allsburg’s The Polar Express, he has longed to be a part of its great adventure. New Hope for Kids granted Ben’s wish in December by taking him on a trip to ride on the real Polar Express. In addition to riding the Polar Express train through the Smoky Mountains with family and friends, Ben enjoyed the Aquarium in Gatlinburg, Dollywood, and the train museum. “The Polar Express was magical! We were treated like royalty. They sang the hot chocolate song while serving it and Ben danced in the aisle. Ben loved singing and dancing to songs from the movie and meeting Santa. His favorite part was when the engineer let him blow the train’s whistle! Ben said, ‘Can you believe it? It’s the Polar Express!’ His face was pure happiness.”

JAYDEN’S STORY ayden appears to be like every other 3-year-old boy. He can run and play, he is animated and charming; but Jayden has already gone through 6 surgeries. He was only a year old when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Following these surgeries and 72 chemo treatments, Jayden is now holding his own and is in remission. Jayden loves anything that has to do with Spiderman. Looking around his room, it is easy to spot Spiderman posters, bedspread, games, CD’s and other signs of Jayden’s hero. More than anything, Jayden wanted to meet Spiderman and spend some time at Universal Studios. The Helping Hands Team from UCF raised enough money to purchase annual passes for Jayden. He can now visit Disney, Universal and Sea World all year long! Jayden also loves rides, so Helping Hands and NHFK arranged a wish celebration at Fun Spot Thrill Park in Orlando. Fun Spot generously donated over $300 in-kind to help make Jayden’s day a success. Through the diligence of UCF’s Helping Hands Team and donors throughout Central Florida, Jayden’s wish came true. “I appreciate all of the hard work that Jayden’s team and New Hope for Kids have put forth. They grant wishes to children who would probably never be able to afford a trip like this. I think it’s wonderful what they are doing.”

JEANMARIE’S STORY eanmarie is a spirited 8 year old with spina bifida and cerebral palsy, but knowing her, you cannot accurately call her handicapped. Her wish was to go to the Maile School for Acting and Modeling. Her goal is to be in a real commercial. She had her first “shoot” this summer and now she’s ready for Television! UCF Cornerstone Team “Living the Dream” chose to help with Jeanmarie’s wish. They raised $1,142 and planned a fun party at Chuck-E-Cheese for Jeanmarie and her friends. Everyone had a wonderful time enjoying cake, pizza, and games. As if that wasn’t enough excitement, NHFK volunteer Michelle Chamberland arranged for Jeanmarie to join her at a Magic game. Following that game, Michael Pietrus invited Jeanmarie to come back as his special guest for the April 4th game! “Wow how exciting! Jeanmarie is jumping with joy! It is amazing and I am surprised. We really appreciate everything NHFK has done. This is a dream come true. Thank you for your support.”

THE WOJTECZKO FAMILY STORY ne of our grief moms, Melisa Wojteczko, wanted to share her thoughts after she and her two kids attended NHFK’s Center for Grieving Children. We’re so glad Joshua and Nicole benefited from our grief program, and that Melisa found hope for her children. “After the unexpected death of my husband in January of 2010, my whole world came crashing down. I found myself alone with two little kids, struggling to make sense of what was now, “our reality”. How do you explain to a 3 year old that their “dada” is not coming back? From the initial call to the center, I knew we were in good hands. For my kids, knowing that they were not alone and could talk and play with other kids going through similar circumstances was their first step in their grieving process. Because of New Hope, my kids are now able to sleep through the night without constant nightmares, they understand that what they are going through is normal. But most importantly, they are happy again!”
“After my dada passed away, I felt really sad. At New Hope, the counselors and rooms helped me with my grief. My favorite counselor was Lou – he was funny and always made me laugh. I was glad that I met other kids that were going through the same thing I was going through. New Hope made me feel happier. New Hope is now our family!” - Joshua Wojteczko 19
