Hybrid Network Internet Archive + Coworking Community 16-week studio Fall 2018 with Ali gholamabbas The project aims to revolutionize the paradigm of working by establishing a co-working community within an internet archive. There is a global rising trend in start-up and freelancing, which can be a great opportunity for Toronto to activate its waterfront with more economical growth. The abundant resources from the internet archive can be great assets for all the freelancers and entrepreneurs around Toronto. Home is the ideal working environment for freelancers. By introducing the idea of a “home” into a public building and organizing its programs into five “rooms” (living room, bedroom, kitchen, dining room, garage), the space now has a new relationship with its users.

Programs

The site is located between the Quayside and the Port Lands of Toronto, sitting next to the Google Sidewalk Labs.

Placing five “rooms” on the site.

Program Fluidity

Visibility

Allowing programs to “flow” and intervene with each other to create a sense of community in order to de-institutionalize the internet archive.

Adjusting the massing to accommodate the site conditions and open up the building to the city and the lake.

12

Hierarchy Extruding the rooms into volumes with different hierarchy depends on the programs.

Landscape Creating public plaza and parks around the internet archive to further engage with the city and the coastline.

T he form of the building is a physical manifestation of internet,

it is fragmented yet cohesive. The five rooms are linked by bridges to blur the program boundaries and also create a continuous and dynamic surface for the facade. The landscape is generated from both the topography of the site and the massing in order to be a continuum of the urban fabrics that sits between downtown Toronto and the rising Port Lands district.

Lakota Heritage Center Educational Institute for the Lakota Sioux Tribe 8-week studio Summer 2017 Allen, SD Lakota Heritage Center focuses on the community and cultural context of Lakota Sioux tribe in South Dakota. Most heritage centers only display the past and showcase the culture, but rarely address the contemporary issues of the community. This heritage center will have a more active role in helping the Lakota Sioux population. The 8-week summer studio also includes a field trip to South Dakota for the site and visit Dr. Craig Howe for advice and project critic.

23

Graduate School Selected Works 2016-2018

T he heritage center is composed of two major

programs: a museum wing and a pre-collegiate educational institute. The project is designed under the guidance of the Lakotan architecture design principles. The form of the museum is a juxtaposition of rectangular boxes and spheres. The spheres are expanding outward and exploding out of the restriction of the frames. It is a metaphor for the power and tenacity of the Sioux nation and it also symbolizes the constant struggle they’ve been encountering.

24

The institute will house younger generation and help them combat alcohol & drug addiction, sexual abuse, and suicide, and give them educational opportunity and health care. In addition, they will be able to receive career training and have the opportunity to work at the museum in order to gain income and experience.

Part of the heritage center’s missions is to help the reservation to move forward by considering the future of the tribe. With both the museum and the educational institute, the architecture aims to reconstruct the community and re-channel the power of the nation by giving younger generation in the reservation a sense of purpose.

Lakotan Architecture Principles from Dr. Craig Howe: Centering: how the concept of center is understood by the community Orienting: positioning the center in relation to the landscape and skyscape Moving: the order of entering, moving through, then exiting space Arranging: the proper internal placement of spaces in relation to the center Echoing: the concept most people use for design guidelines, including forms, colors, numbers, shapes, plants, animals, and time. It is the reflection of forms and materials in the environment 28

Aviation Maintenance School Sustainable Addition to Parkland College 16-week studio Fall 2016 with Theradej Nasueb The idea of the project is to re-brand Parkland College into a world-class institute. Learning through awareness is emphasized with the transparency of structure and programs. To address the need for sustainability, passive design strategy and bio-mimetic technologies are incorporated. Because the Aviation Maintenance School is separated from Parkland College campus, a central boulevard is created to provide a sense of campus.

Simplified Complexity Design & Build Urban Installation in Urbana, Illinois 8-week studio Spring 2017 with Austin Zehr Bradley Berg The project is a part of the Root to Roof Initiative: the mission is to reuse Urbana’s waste timber for the community and promote sustainability. This project in particular collaborated with the Urbana Government to create an installation in the new Water Street Mini Park. The idea is to create a filter between the park and the parking lot. All the materials in the Water Street Mini Park are recycled as well.

“We developed an idea of nonstandard module. We collected the leftover pieces after other teams trimmed the wood down into 2’ by 4’ planks. We wanted to preserve the material as much as we can including all the barks and imperfections. People don’t get to see wood at this stage, they either see a tree or a perfectly processed plank.” Nonstandard module 1

“We opened up the frame in specific angles to create a more dynamic experience. The layout also helps increasing structure stability. We then designed the angles of the tabs so the visibility changes as you proceed through the installation. Each surface essentially can be seen as two layers with clean jointed one at the back and live edges at the front. The porosity of the screen changes with the angles and the materiality.

Digital Restoration of the University Hall Research Project for U of I Sesquicentennial Summer & Fall 2017 with Prof. Marci Uihlein As part of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Sesquicentennial celebration, the ‘Mapping Hisotry’ project aims to digitize the history of UIUC with three categories: ‘Campus History’, ‘Interactive Maps’, and ‘Map Archives’. I worked on the digital restoration of the University Hall under the campus history section with Prof. Uihlein to bring the historical building back to life. For more information please visit YouTube and school website.

The project started with gathering blue prints and photos from the university archives for the digital restoration, and read through the U of I Board of Trustee reports from 1870s to find out about the materials when they first commissioned the construction. The only remanining piece on campus is the sandstone portal entrance. The Old Main of the University of Arkansas also served as a modeling reference since they used the drawings of University Hall to construct it.

Project Eden Reinventing zoological park Coexist: Rethinking Zoo competition 2018 Spring 2018

Project Eden is a global scale movement seeks to elevate the concept of zoo to fit in the current zeitgeist. It aims to reverse the effect of Colonialism by focusing on geographical and regional context. Each institution will only house wildlife from the local region and use the site-specific trait to promote tourism. The word, ‘zoo’, should seize to exist and only belong to the past. It should be identified as a space that human and nature co-exist. All institutions will strictly follow two rules: 1. There is no entertainment, only education. 2. There is no human-animal interaction, except staff.

Current: The zoo houses 157 species from all around the world. 82% of them are not originally from Spain.

Proposed: Only keep the local 27 species and send the rest back to their local region institutions. In addition, the park will also house Catalonian plants and trees. 61

Graduate School Selected Works 2016-2018

For Barcelona, the solution is to lift the tourist circulation up with pilotis and free up the entire ground level for the wildlife to maximize their living area. The layout of the park is organized from the unique city grid of L’Eixample, and the landscape is derived from the areas of the cells the animals used to live in to create a hidden educational message.

Proposed animal living area Proposed: Net area: 153159 m2 Current animal living area: 123203 m2 (80.4%, increased by 20.4%)

Current animal living area Current: Net area: 153159 m2 Current animal living area: 91582.28 m2 (60%) Tourist circulation area: 61576.72 m2 (40%)

Public space The architectural language is inspired by the Parc de la Ciutadella area and also the circular grid from Carrer de Moscou. Proposed: Tourist circulation area: 125750 m2

Facilities There will be no aquatic area for the Barcelona park due the limitation of the site. The programs focus on the education of wildlife and research facility.

Hill of the past The landscape within the park is derived from the area of the cells the animals used to live in and turned them into hills. Such landscape is educational for the visitors and healthy for the animals. 62

Nico Hsu Portfolio Vol. 3

Entrance At the end of the axis is a grand plaza to conclude the experience at the Parc de la Ciutadella and make transition into the wildlife park. An installation of a mother bear and its cub symbolizes the nature of love and uses that message to tie all the spaces together. The installation is placed at the opposite end of Arc de Triomf to send the message, make love instead of war. The multi-purpose space is hosting a photo exibition showing animal abuses in zoos around the world.

Interior Visitors will be observing wildlife 4.5 meters aboveground so they do not distrub them. There will be lots of digital media for educational purpose including text, image, and video. The interior floor uses the tile ‘Flor de Barcelona’ to make it an extension of the street. It is a common ‘panot’ you can find on the street of L’Eixample neighborhood. 63

Graduate School Selected Works 2016-2018

The layout follows the axis of Passeig de St. Joan, and splits the park in two: one for human, one for wildlife. The ratio is 2:8. Suitable animals will now co-living in the same zone.
