“We developed the idea of nonstandard module. We collected the leftover pieces after other teams trimmed the wood down into 2’ by 4’ planks. We wanted to preserve the material as much as we can including all the barks and imperfections. People don’t get to see wood at this stage, they either see a tree or a perfectly processed plank.”

“We opened up the frame in specific angles to create a more dynamic experience. The layout also helps increasing structure stability. We then designed the angles of the tabs so the visibility changes as you proceed through the installation. Each surface essentially can be seen as two layers with clean jointed one at the back and live edges at the front. The porosity of the screen changes with the angles and the materiality.

Lakota Heritage Center Educational Institute for the Lakota Sioux Tribe 8-week studio Summer 2017 Allen, SD Most heritage centers only display the past and showcase the culture, but rarely address the contemporary issues of the community. This heritage center will have a more active role in helping the reservation and Lakota Sioux population.

he heritage center is composed of two major programs: a museum wing and a pre-collegiate educational institute. The project is designed under the guidance of the Lakotan architecture design principles. The form of the museum is a juxtaposition of rectangular boxes and spheres. The spheres are expanding outward and exploding out of the restriction of the frames. It is a metaphor for the power and tenacity of the Sioux nation and it also symbolizes the constant struggle they’ve been encountering.

27

Nico Hsu

The institute will house younger generation and help them combat alcohol & drug addiction, sexual abuse, and suicide, and give them educational opportunity and health care. In addition, they will be able to receive career training and have the opportunity to work at the museum in order to gain income and experience. Part of the heritage center’s missions is to help the reservation to move forward by considering the future of the tribe.

28

The Selected Works

With both the museum and the educational institute, the architecture aims to reconstruct the community and re-channel the power of the nation by giving younger generation in the reservation a sense of purpose.

“Everything the Power of the World does is done in a circle. The sky is round, and I have heard that the earth is round like a ball, and so are all the stars. The wind, in its greatest power whirls. Birds make their nest in circles, for theirs is the same religion as ours. The sun comes forth and goes down again in a circle. The moon does the same and both are round. Even the seasons form a great circle in their changing, and always come back again to where they were. The life of a man is a circle from childhood to childhood, and so it is in everything where power moves. Our tepees were round like the nests of birds, and these were always set in a circle, the nation’s hoop.” –Black Elk

Parkland College Aviation School Sustainable Addition to Parkland College 16-week studio Fall 2016 with Theradej Nasueb

Architecture / Travel

The idea is to re-brand Parkland College into a world-class institute. Learning through awareness is emphasized with the transparency of structure and programs. To address the need for sustainability, passive design strategy and bio-mimetic technologies are incorporated. Because the Aviation Maintenance School is separated from Parkland College campus, a central boulevard is created to provide a sense of campus.

37

“Our approach is client-based and linear in terms of the programs and layout. We aimed to design an efficient and sustainable aviation school and focus primarily on performance and technology.

Mecha Farming Speculative Design for Grain Silos’ Future 5-week studio Spring 2017

50

The Selected Works

Mecha farming is a speculative design project exploring grain silos’ renovation in the distant future and rethinking the users of architecture. The project is located at Pierson Station, IL, where the extinct town is sustained by agriculture. The idea is to turn it into a remote station resided with machines, robots, and drones. The project challenges the design methodology of architecture in terms of program, circulation, architectonics, and functions.

The design strictly follows two principles: axes for robotic movement, and

machine aesthetics. There are two types of circulation system: one for robots to move efficiently in axial directions, and the other one for human staff and visitors to walk around and roam freely. The interior design focuses on the verticality of silo and the spatial transparency within the building and between the facilities.

House in Forest Housing Project in Human Subconscious House in Forest Design Competition Spring 2017 with Casey Revelle Robert Konzelmann

68

The Selected Works

The project explores the symbiotic relationship between psychology and architecture. By interchanging the vocabulary in each field, defining characteristics are synchronized, giving rise to a new discourse altogether. This new discourse then creates a dialogue between the users and the used.

House of Memory

She watched as that very thought flow past her into the sphere. Trying not to lose it, she chased it to a door and stepped inside. The transition between inside and out -- built and nature was seamless, perfect. She explored the house -- feeling an overwhelming peace as she moved through each space, seeing herself in its design. The house was in perfect harmony with its surroundings, just as she was. Suddenly, she understood.

“I created this.” Jane realized she could control more than her attitude. By focusing inward, she could control the forest, just as the house of memories did. Her happiness sustained the forest, like seeds sewn into the landscape.

69

“This is where I belong,” she said as she watched her last thought float down the stream she stood over.

Convergence Uniting U of I Campus with Architectural Interventions

The Selected Works

U of I Sesquicentennial Design competition Spring 2017 with Marco Nieto Melanie Iverson Yazmine Carbajal The idea is to tie the entire campus together with a similar design language. We used Kevin Lynch’s urbanism theory to study the campus, and instead of focusing on a certain location, we wanted to include the whole campus across three quadrangles. We wanted to create a focal point at the south quad with the oldest structure on campus, the Mumford House. We avoided adding more focal points on the main quad by scattering them around in the buffer zones. Lastly, for Bardeen quad, we overlapping the installation with the focal point since we wanted to further improve it.
