Probability The first part of this page is a summary that can be helpful to do the exercise.

Remember the following rules: P(an event does not occur) = 1 - P(the event does occur). For two events A and B , P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B) – P(A and B) , where “A or B” means “A or B or both”. Two events, A and B, are independent if the outcome of one event does not affect the outcome of the other, in which case P(A and B) = P(A) × P(B). P(B|A) represents the probability of event B occurring given that A has occurred: P (A ∩ B) . P(B|A)= P (A)

Exercise: Ian and Joe play soccer in the same club. Sixteen soccer players play in that club. Each of them is perfectly trained so that each of them can be assigned any playing position in a match. There are eleven such positions, numbered 1 to 11. Before each match, the coach chooses eleven kids of the club at random and assigns a position (i.e. a number between 1 and 11) to each of them. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

What is the probability that Ian is assigned number 1 ? What is the probability that Ian is assigned an even number? An odd number? What is the probability that Joe is selected to play the match? What is the probability that Ian or Joe plays the match? What is the probability that Joe plays the match, knowing that Ian doesn't play the match.
