1960’s Typography

Typography in the 1960s “By 1969, it’s really anything goes, from heavily psychedelic hand-drawn styles to the overtly traditional.”

One aspect of the type/graphics on posters in this era is the fight for attention of the viewers eye. The array of colours and chaotic writing all over the place unbalances the structure. For example above in the Woodstock poster it can be stressful when looking at it due to the abundance of colour; the heading ‘Woodstock’ is somewhat less affective as a result of all the other semi headings. In another sense, this style of typography directly represents the 1960’s - a decade of colour, music and funk!

The Optical art movement was driven by artists who were interested in investigating various perceptual effects. Similarly to this was ‘Pop Art’ which played a huge part in 1960’s typography. Evidently from above, typographers loved to use this style of art when creating posters, advertisements, album covers and more as it created further excitement in viewers connecting with them personally.

The psychedelic, colourful craziness was everywhere from famous album covers such as the Beatles to advetisement posters for huge music festivals such as Woodstock. Above are two of my favourite posters of Jimi Hendrix and Elvis Presley from the 60’s. The illustrations and the typography in them creates a glorification surrounding the musicians.
