Andrea Cruz

Artist Statement The artwork is extreme. A paradox of choice between the similarities of deep contrastive colors. “I feel for harmony between contrasting colors when I paint,” says Southern California artist Andrea Cruz. “It’s always been that way.” Growing up, her talent was identified early. Cruz could draw anything as an exact match from a very early age. Horses, people, nature scenes all made appearances in Cruz’s early works.

In this life we live in multiple dimensions of psychological states, and as we encounter the matrix of duality is easy to develop conditional responses based on the multiple dimension of human consciousness and understanding. How easy one could become separated from the origin of the self that is centered in Logic, Practicality and Compassion. becoming kaivalya is the journey of returning to the center of oneness and shedding the multiple layers of the human defense mechanism in order to become our natural state of powerful beings. Andrea Patrie

Email: apatrie@mac.com Phone: 562.216.3234 Instagram: @andreapatrie Facebook: /andreapatrie

Artist Statement My current focus is exploring space and developing a place to enter the painting and work your way though. I am particularly interested in creating an environment and building upon emotionally charged content via the figure in that environment. The thick application of paint helps me to pull forms out and carve out place on a two dimensional surface. My work is visceral in nature, charged with emotion and at times frantically laid out. Prints are available of some of her artwork: 8” x 10” pieces are $100 and 16” x 24” are $150

Highlighted artwork In the piece “Open for You" the figure sits in a clearly defined space inviting the viewer in yet keeps one a bay with a disconnected gaze. the way the figure and environment is rendered creates an emotional and psychologically charged space for viewers to contend with. Typically Andrea’s work is emotionally charged and laden with text which guides the viewer. also different is that In this piece Andrea utilized direct observation to

render the figure. Elements that have carried over in her the new series of work can be seen in the visceral application of paint, carving out the figure and letting accidents guide the direction of the work.

Andres Email: andresmentation@yahoo.com Phone: 562.324.7998 Alarcon Website: www.andfactory.weebly.com

Artist statement My name is Andres Alarcon or just AND?. I have been doing art since I was a child as something to keep me busy. I originally was given a piece of art made from a gum wrapper which I thought was so cool I had to be able to make stuff like it. I would later be inspired “The Twilight zone the episode with the invaders” and steampunk art style is what led me to my style or body or work. As art goes I don't believe art always has to have a meaning as long as you enjoy it. I'm a very basic person I love art and love what I do.

highlighted artwork I’m not sure what gave me the idea of this piece or how I started. I used various scraps I found in my sheet metal class. It is a mix of welding and wire I used a blender and some ear phones to make the inner workings.

artist statement I started carving bone and antler while living in New Zealand 10 years ago, hence the "carving" in vagabond carving. When I returned to California, I immediately built a small workshop and started figuring out how to really do this thing. In the following 10 years, I have expanded the materials and techniques I want to work with. At this point, my juices get flowing over large scale, wall hanging, wooden sculptures as seen in the collection on display at ArtX.

Angel Email: angelgrace.king@yahoo.com Phone: 714.6426945 Instagram: @starsformylove king Tumblr: /angelkingsart

artist statement I am an art major at Long Beach City College focusing in sculpture. I also enjoy painting and drawing. I strive to explore and experiment with other mediums within art. I am interested in abstract forms, and patterns. In my current drawing work, I use contour ink line drawings with detailed patterns inside over watercolor. I plan to further my education by transferring to UCLA to get my BFA degree., and get my teaching credentials. In the future I hope to become an art teacher and own my own gallery.

Highlighted artwork

The first idea I had for this piece was for me to

doodle which are usually in ink, detailed and use pattern. I used the form of a body and filled the inside with pattern that reference bodies. I wanted the viewer to be intimate with the viewing of the detailed lines but still get the general shape when viewed from far away.

Anne howard Email: anne.machoward@gmail.com

artist statement The works presented here are a reflection of the profound grief I experienced after the deaths of my sons. The angel titled "No Words," was done after Christopher died in 2004. I painted for 18 months, over and over, I wanted to show somebody, everybody, the world, how devastated I felt and I truly have no words to describe it. In 2011, Matthew died and I began the next four pieces. I worked the boy, titled Winter, with the same intensity as the angel. The collection took about two years to complete. Since their deaths I am driven to explore the human condition through the experiences of the wounded, the desperate, the aged; those on the edge of existence. I am drawn to the survivors; those that awaken every day to dreaded memory, yet rise and go on, trying to live as though it never happened.

Candice Email: candice@seewong.com Instagram: @candiceliyin Website: www.seewong.com Wong www.nuvango.com/seewong

artist statement Candice Wong has been designing and doing artwork in Southern California for many years. After she completed her BFA at California State University of Fullerton with an emphasis in graphic design, she worked professionally for several years before traveling the states and gaining perspective through many enriching teachers and experience in the arts. Having this balance between art and design has given her a unique outlook when approaching her pieces. She has been showing in various galleries since 2005 and has been a featured artist at The Hive Gallery in Los Angeles which was voted “Best Art Gallery 2013” and “Best Stop on the Downtown Art Walk, Los Angeles, 2014” by LA Weekly.

Highlighted artwork When Candice first began working on Release she didn’t know that it would turn out to be the opening to the rest of her pieces or that it would be a part of a featured show. A small 15 minute sketch was pulled from her book and was redrawn and painted onto a 2.5’x5.5’ piece of banner paper. 5 additional pieces were painted in this style on wood panels with acrylic, watercolor and airbrush . Release still remains as her favorite. Title: Release

Christian Phone: 949.246.1752 ward Email: csalcedoward@gmail.com

artist statement Christian Ward received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Oregon and his MFA in printmaking from Cal State Long Beach in 2012. Ward is currently adjunct art faculty in the Art and Photo Department at Long Beach City College where he teaches printmaking and drawing. He is also a printmaking instructor at Angels Gate Cultural center in San Pedro and at Social Vocational Services in Lakewood. Christian Ward’s current practice is based in exploring the landscape and engaging that space through various creative faculties.

Highlighted artwork The works featured are prints. Printmaking allows me to self publish the findings of my explorations with communities. My creative process involves exploring the landscape and then processing the experience through creative tools. For the last ten years those creative tools have come in the form of layers of copper, intaglio etching, a printmaking process where one incises line work into a copper plate with the aid of a corrosive mordant. The imagery in these works are re‐compositions of sketchbook drawings I make during long excursions through our landscape. Often I find myself riding a bicycle for long distances over a few days and nights. Recent explorations have brought me from Long Beach to San Diego or from Long Beach to Santa Barbara. My intention for my creative practice is to contribute to the greater cultural landscape we all find ourselves in.

Artist statement Joshua Dean Zastrow, a Wisconsin born, moved to Huntington Beach in search of a new beginning. Joshua grew up with little knowledge of art, however, has been fascinated with it. As a self ‐taught artist, Joshua started painting for his own pleasure; his starting medium was acrylic over canvas. As time went on Joshua started to discover new techniques and became fascinated with plaster over burlap with acrylic paint. Wood, canvas, and plaster, burlap, acrylic ink is among some of Joshua’s mediums. Cracking the plaster and creating an image has been among his favorite things to do. Spending hours on one individual piece the end result is one of uniqueness.

Artist statement I am inspired by the emotional and social connections that people have to jewelry. Jewelry is often a cherished gift from a loved one or a treasure that accompanies us on life's wonderful journeys. I create each of my pieces with those relationships in mind, and the hope that my work will be handed down and enjoyed for years to come. My work is influenced by nature, and I try to imitate its carefree spirit and give each of my pieces a graceful organic feel by using delicate lines and handpicked natural gemstones.

Having taught Cultural Anthropology at Cal Poly and Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, she now teaches Life Story Writing for Santiago Canyon College in Orange, California.

Highlighted artwork The tapestry technique is unique because horizontal weft yarns are woven between the fixed vertical warps only as far as each color is required, creating a design that is an integral part of the fabric. It should not be confused with needlepoint or crewel embroidery, where yarn is applied to an already existing fabric structure. "

90. Summer Quills 8” x 10” $125

These two pieces are part of a group of 4 selvedge (finished edge on all sides) small format tapestries, The wedge technique creates an angled edge because the tension between the wefts and warps is uneven.

"It's like a time I knew from a place I can't recall," these few words bore the inspiration for "Touch of Venice." The dim neon to the left serving as the beautiful memory, is opposed by the obscurity that occupies the right side of the frame in monochrome. This slice of life serves to merge the past and the present in a single frame.

Artist statement Drawing on futurist and expressionist tradition I try to maintain sensitivity to the unique color of our landscape. Focusing on memories of familiar places, I work to create spaces that are fractured yet loaded with imagery. Although some images may be more recognizable than others, it is the expanse not the specific that is significant. I work with imagined, often exaggerated color. Using a variety of media: pastel, acrylic and oil, I work simultaneously between modes of drawing and painting; the distinction is not always clear. Color and line vibrate and blur coming into focus now and then. Objects become stacked and compressed in shallow space. Much like the reconstruction of memory, spatial understanding and intuition intersect on the painted surface to create an emotional response. I love combining physical experience and a wandering eye with a reckless hand. When exploring the emotional connection I have to my personal landscape, I find that architecture and natural forms maintain a lasting impression on my psyche. Like Van Gogh’s cypress trees, aspects of the landscape supplant living figures taking on a liveliness that rivals our own.

Highlighted artwork From a series of drawings and paintings dealing with openings, doors, and other transitional spaces, "Portal, Ground Level" combines real with imagined space. Originally inspired by sketches of coastal corridors, this painting took a turn for the catastrophic. The portal in this case refers to the fracturing of the image, opening the door to accents of line and color.

Nolan Email: nolan@silverlakeartgarage.com lemos Website: www.silverlakeartgarage.com

Artist statement Growing up on a farm in California’s central valley, Nolan found solace in drawing and creating a world that expanded far beyond the borders of his small town. Inspired by old road signs and eroded buildings, Nolan's DIY punk aesthetic is reflected in his portraits of misfits that live slightly left of center. Mindful of sustainability, his canvas of choice is reclaimed wood, found on the side of the road or in a construction dumpster.

Highlighted artwork After a stint of painting portraits on larger canvases, I wanted to create a set of that was relatively small. The imagery of vintage fruit crate labels have always inspired me. I love how each company has their own unique design. Sometimes it has nothing to do with the fruit that they are selling. When I finished drawing all the designs, I painted them in different colors and used different elements to give me a chance to explore more with the same idea. (remaining set pictured below).

Calavera Tequila ‐ I drew skulls as part of a Dia de Muertos project I’ve been working on. After the project was done, I wanted to rework the skull image into a larger piece. Staying within the Mexican theme, I found it interesting to design my own bottle of tequila.

Title: Home Run Medium: Acrylic and enamel on wood Dimensions: 21” x 21” Value: $155

Home Run ‐ I cut some wood for another painting and I was left with this “home plate” shape. I feel like this shape is so unique to baseball that I went with the theme. I painted in some elements and removed some elements from the background, yet it still felt like there was missing something. Shelving the piece for awhile, I decided later that it needed something humorous. That’s when I added Señor Maize.

Sheena ‐ While listening to “Sheena is a Punk Rocker” (The Ramones), I asked myself what would Sheena look like. I knew that she had to be very lanky and skinny like Joey Ramone. She also had to be somewhat unattractive. A beautiful ugly. With these series of paintings, I wanted to capture my vision Sheena and incorporate the imagery that goes along with punk rock.

The People’s Soap Company Email: hello@peoplessoap.com Website: www.PeopleSoap.com

artist statment As The People's Soap Company, I handcraft my original formula multi‐function bar soaps for face, body and hands. I make each batch by hand using whole natural ingredients. It began when I set a personal challenge to make soaps as holiday gifts. I quickly learned soap has incredible potential to soothe skin, so I sought the most moisturizing soap formulas possible. Eight percent of profits go to charity, and I now regularly lead workshops in my Santa Ana studio.

My process is about change, growth, discovery, movement, transformation, and continuously expanding my vision of what is possible. Nature is my greatest inspiration. I see nature as a monument to all of life on Earth. As a means of caring for the Earth, I choose to re‐ purpose materials that have been previously discarded to create art that addresses materialism, mass consumption and waste.

“Voya” I look into nature and feel at home, and recognize this deep seeded familiar space. The ever changing voyage, I remember this place, it is all I know, it is looking back at me, I see myself, a copy. A voyeur lifting the drapes to the unknown. This is where I feel at peace. Artist statement Photographs capture a fleeting moment of life’s events; a glimpse into a world that no longer exists. My aim is provoking emotion, thought, understanding and dialog. I invite you to explore new places, ideas or viewpoints daydream or meditate. My work represents the elements of real life as they were, altering perception through color. Combining light, shadows, color, composition and perspective, a memorable image, like a gourmet meal, blends ingredients creating mood, taste and texture. The elements of my images are what I envisioned aside from altering color. I don’t use Photoshop to add, delete or alter captured events.

Highlighted artwork "Ferns," and the accompanying pieces, illustrate varying degrees of form and color abstraction. A lone fern hanging in the dark was backlit by a startled security light. Bright beams of unfiltered light shone through, interspersed with the fern's balanced shadows. Varying soft earth shades of green and brown contrasted with stark bright and darkness. All elements, motion and blur effects result from low‐light, handheld, manual camera techniques, without flash. The fern no longer resembles what we know, or what we think. Without being led by obvious and definitive subject matter our brain is allowed to create or not , oftentimes without our input and fantastic results.

Artist statement I have always loved art and drawing, since I was little, watching my mom draw little flip books. I was exposed to it, and lived with it, and eventually learned to draw myself, especially cartoons and comics. Drawing gave me some purpose, I felt like I could do something important. My goal, with my art, has always been to create something original, something that looked realistic, but was straight out of my imagination, with no references. I later learned, however, that incorporating knowledge about art, and my own experiences, was necessary ‐‐ in order to create my "unique realism" on a blank canvas, or wall, or piece of paper. I learned to use real‐life rules, in order to make the imaginary believable.
