Barking Station

The new station was opened as part of the London Tilbury & Southend Railway's new line which left the Eastern Counties Railway's main line at a new junction at Forest Gate. Two separate LT&SR trains from London departed from Fenchurch Street and Shoreditch and were combined at Stratford for the Tilbury journey (and split at Stratford in the opposite direction).Barking was a small village at the time and the original railway station was a two-platform affair which opened on 13th April 1854. Congestion in Stratford and a deterioration in the relationship between the lessees operating LT & SR and the Eastern County Railroad created a new route between Barking and the Gas Factory Junction, which joined the London & Blackwall Extension Railroad in 1858.

The area that I've chosen is a site near barking station as well as near local schools and shopping districts.

1889 rebuilding:

▪ An additional through platform on the underside of the station.

• Two existing platforms have been extended to accommodate longer trains.

• New station building

• New cattle dock

1902-1908 Developments:

In 1902, the LT&SR made some adjustments to the signaling system that had a positive impact. These changes were a precursor to more significant changes that would take place in the area in the future. A new bridge over the River Roding was opened in 1900 and the old bridge was replaced in 1903.The new scheme saw the Great Eastern/T&FGR trains running on the northern lines and the LT&SR trains on the southern lines.
