01 The Green In-Between: The Future of Public Spaces in Response to Increasing Heat Waves and Urban Flood Risks Year: 2022-2023 Location: Toronto Project Description: Individual Project The need for nature in urban areas stems from inadequate protection from extreme weather events, which leave neighbourhoods disproportionately affected based on location, material makeup, and demographics. Most Canadians reside in major cities, and protection from these events, such as heat waves and urban flooding, is crucial, particularly in areas where material makeup contributes to their impacts. Urbanism has increased the amount of impermeable materials, resulting in higher temperatures and flood risks from climate change. This thesis proposes the development of an urban park from a parking lot, highlighting the need for greenery within cities to mitigate climate change’s effects and create comfortable microclimates. The project outlines a framework to apply this approach to other areas due to the rapid pace of urbanization. This thesis project creates an urban park in the downtown core of Toronto offering a variety of places for people to sit, relax, and remain protected from the effects of climate change. The site slopes down from street level in order to direct any excess of water towards an underground water reservoir to be filtered through vegetation, and then to be redistributed through the site through misting devices and a wading pool. On the street level, there is space for a children’s playground and splash pad area. The second floor supports a deep green roof that allows for an elevated forested landscape. The top level hosts a destination-based community garden for residents in the neighbourhood. Shading devices located on the sloped part of the site offer protection and work to collect and filter water. 06

02 Recovering the Public Spaces of Shahjahanabad

Year: 2021 Location: Delhi, Inida Project Description: Small Group Project After a brief research analysis of Delhi, India, these five maps were created as a collaborative effort to showcase different urban ecologies in this area. A combination of social ecologies, ecological systems and urban form are shown through hydrological systems, location of green spaces combined with circulation, and zoning where it pertains to sacred architecture. This project is the beginning of the Master’s Studio. Further, these small bamboo structures were created as a solution to bring visual interest and identification into the markets of the Chandni Chowk. Located on the side streets, the kutras, these markets are often crowded, difficult to locate, and offer little to no shade protection to the vendors working there. These bamboo structures allow for fabric materials to be interchanged depending on season or festival and can be colour coordinated to help direct people to these markets.

03 Mixed Use Residential Complex

Year: 2020-2021 Location: Sudbury Project Description: Partner Project This site’s location is in the downtown area of Sudbury with many shops and restaurants nearby. Situated on two lots, this mixed-use residential complex features a parking structure, small retail store, a bistro, a grocery store and two separate residential buildings. Through the urban planning of the site, public outdoor spaces were created with coloured bricks to designate the path of travel in and around the site. As Sudbury has many murals in the downtown core it was important to preserve and honour the mural located on the site. The North building caters towards students, either attending the McEwen School of Architecture downtown or Laurentian University on main campus. Its location in the downtown core allows quick access to the transit system and provides services for individuals. The South building has a series of 1, 2, and 3 bedroom market rental units catering towards students, working individuals, and families. Complete with a rooftop outdoor space and sport court, it provides recreation in downtown Sudbury. As a way to bring liveliness into the downtown alleyways, the common rooms and balconies overlook the public streets below. The positioning of access to public spaces (bistro and the grocery store) from the alleyways aids to revitalise less populated areas.

04 Art Gallery - Adaptive Reuse

Year: 2020 Location: Sudbury Project Description: Individual Project Located at the edge of the downtown area of Sudbury, this art gallery brings new life and culture into an abandoned building. As a way to connect both sides of the building, a public open atrium located on the main floor allows for public gatherings. The galleries are located on the upper floors and can easily overlook into the atrium and into floors below, creating a sense of connection between areas. As a way to integrate art into the community and to bring the community together, public art classes, and various educational rooms are located opposite to the gallery space. A public greenspace located on the more populated street allows for interaction between the street and gallery levels.

05 Playhouse

Year: 2019 Location: Sudbury Project Description: Group Project This collaborative studio design-build project created a playhouse structure for a non-for-profit organisation located in the Sudbury area. Taking up approximately 25 sqft, this playhouse is intended for children aged 1 to 5 years old. This modular unit features various sized blocks that mimic the childhood building block toy. Smaller design and construction features encourage children to develop their gross and fine motor skills. Interior climbing areas are padded with foam mats that follow a similar pattern and colour scheme that the boxes have. Cutouts with rotating doors with mirrors, fabric pieces and spinning blocks are all various activities in which children can further their development.

06 Early Learning Childcare Centre

Year: 2019 Location: Copper Cliff Project Description: Individual Project Located in Copper Cliff, Ontario, this early learning childcare centre allows children in the community to further their developmental skills. As well as bringing the children together, a public community space allows parents, families and community members to come together. With the focus on childhood development this early learning childcare centre is suited for children ages 6 months to 4 years old. A large central shared gross motor room allows for all the children to interact with one another. Although the children have their own playrooms based on the age groups, each of the rooms overlook into each other. This was done so that the visual and physical connection is maintained between the children.

07 Ice Station

Year: 2018 Location: Sudbury Project Description: Group Project This Ice Station is a resting place for skaters on the Ramsey Lake Skating Path. This skating path is approximately 1.5 km in length and runs along the shore of Ramsey Lake. Working from the conceptual design stage we created a small scaled model to learn how the structure would come together. From this model we were then able to begin the construction process. Constructed from 2x2’s, each piece was cut and chiseled to fit perfectly together. We chose a design that would effortlessly emerge from the ice and provide seating and resting areas for many people.

08 Multi-Unit Residential Building

Year: 2022 Location: Innisfil Project Description: Co-op Placement As part of the team at McKnight Charron Limited Architects, I worked on developing an eight-story apartment building featuring a variety of 1, 2, and 3 bedroom units. Based on the preliminary site plan layout, the site plan evolved to adhere to unit and building code regulations, encompassing factors such as parking spaces, turning radius, and access to units. Situated on a main street in Innisfil, this development amplifies the town’s residential opportunities while utilizing the adjacent amenities. I was responsible for the development of floor plans, ensuring sufficient unit count based on client feedback. Additionally, I created elevations and created a 3D massing model in Revit using appropriate materials. A shadow study was also conducted to show how the adjacent buildings and lots are impacted from this development.

Project Description: This collection of paintings and artwork have been created between the years of 2017 - 2023.
