THIS IS THE PLANTING PLANT I CREATED FOR THE NATURE PLAYSCAPE AREA. I RESEARCHED NATIVE PLANT SPECIES AS WELL AS OTHER CULTIVARS THAT WOULD BE SUITABLE IN THIS LANDSCAPE. I CREATED SYMBOLS FOR EACH PLANT LISTED IN THE LEGEND. THERE ARE FIVE GARDENS IN THE NATURE PLAYSCAPE. I TRIED TO

INCLUDE PLANTS WITH INTERESTING CHARACTERISTICS LIKE EDIBLE BERRIES, WINTER FLOWERS, FUNKY SMELLING PLANTS. I ALSO MADE SURE TO STAY AWAY FROM ANY PLANTS WITH THORNS OR POISONOUS COMPONENTS SINCE THIS IS AN AREA FOR CHILDREN.

QUALITY PARKS FOR EVERYONE CINCINNATI, OHIO

2022 DAAPWORKS CAPSTONE APRIL 2022

Establishing The Problem, Vision, & Inventory Trust for Public Land identifies that 87% of Cincinnati residents live within a 10-minute walking distance of a quality park. That percentage jumped 15% in the last 3 years. Fastest Risers - Percentage of residents within a 10-minute walk of a park

The vision of Quality Parks for Everyone is for every resident to have safe, easy, and walkable access to a good-quality park. Quality Parks for Everyone evaluates access to good quality parks in the Uptown 2030 District Neighborhoods.

2030 District Neighborhood Parks Versus Non-Parks Many of the the parks and green spaces Trust for Public Land identifies as a park or greenspace are just grassy areas around schools, churches, universities, and even the Cincinnati Zoo & it's parking lot. Areas like this I categorized as "Institutional Greenspace & Nonparks" because they do not include any amenities that benefit the general community in any way.

Overall, there is a large inventory of parks and greenspace, but Trust for Public Land does not have any measurable data that assess their quality.

Pathways

Park quality in the Uptown Neighborhoods Only 5 of the 36 Parks in Uptown are Quality Parks

Security

I designed six quality measures to evaluate park quality, those measures are amenities, seating, walking paths, shade, plant life, and security. I determined that for a park to be considered a quality park, it must have all 6 measures present 10

Who do the Parks in Uptown Serve? Park & Green Space Service Area

Park & Green Space Service Area & Population Density

For Parks Scored: 6 out of 6

For Parks Scored: 6 out of 6

This map combines the park service area of parks scored 6 out of 6 or higher to show what areas have walkable access to quality parks currently.

When you overlay park serviceability, it tells us that most of the dense areas in Uptown are within a 10-minute walk to a park. But, not within a 10-minute walk to a “good quality” park.

Key Neighborhood Statistics Clifton

Population: 8,458 Children: 18.5% Poverty: 18.8% Renters: 66.9% Tree Canopy: 38%

Corryville

Avondale

Population: 12,386 Children: 27.3% Life Expectancy: 68.9 Diabetes: 24% Obestity: 48.8% Poverty: 47.6 Renters: 77.2% Tree Canopy: 18%

Population: 3,859 Children: 7.7% Life Expectancy: 69.6 Poverty: 56.9% CUF Renters: 91.9% Population: 16,412 Tree Canopy: 2% Children: 3.4% Life Expectancy: 62.7 Poverty: 30.6% Renters: 83.5% Tree Canopy: 17% Mt Auburn Population: 4,797 Children: 21.2% Diabetes: 15% Obesity 42% Poverty: 29.7% Renters: 65.1% Tree Canopy: 15%

These Maps prove that quality parks cover only a small portion of the Uptown Neighborhoods. Existing Parks need to increase their quality scores in order to become quality parks that will contribute to a higher quality of life for residents. A lot of neighborhoods have characteristics that can contribute to a lower quality of life. like, low life expectancy.

Tactical Design Solutions To address the lack of good-quality parks in the neighborhoods, I explored several tactical design solutions that can be implemented at a community level in order to meet all six of the quality park measures.

Corryville Rec Area Corryville Rec Area currently scores a 3 out of 6. It has a small playground, basketball court, swings and a large grassy area. I added a shelter made from a container, picnic benches, small wooden theatre stage, a pollinator garden, and a pathway.

MLK & Eden Greenspace Currently, there is no existing park here. But i turned it into a useable space with a hillside slide, rock climbers, box climbers a picnic area, flower garden, all surrounded by a fence. Parks do not have to be elaborate and fancy. They just need to contain essential amenities like the six measures in order to provide the residents with a high quality of life.

HAMILTON COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS SITE PLAN & DESIGN CINCINNATI, OHIO

PLANNING DESIGN STUDIO: TOPICAL JUNE 2021

HAMILTON COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO “EDIT” THE CURRENT HAMILTON COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS. IT WAS A GROUP PROJECT, BUT THE GRAPHICS SHOWN ARE WHAT I CONTRIBUTED. THE VISION IS TO ENHANCE THE CURRENT FAIRGROUNDS BUT ENGAGE THE SPACE 365 DAYS A YEAR. IT WILL INTEGRATE THE MILL CREEK WHICH IS CURRENTLY DISCONNECTED FROM THE SITE WITH TRAILS, LOOKOUTS, AND MAN-MADE WETLANDS.

1: FAIRGROUNDS AS A NEIGHBORHOOD LANDMARK.

2: MILL CREEK AS AN ECOLOGICAL NODE.

3: 4: COMPREHENSIVE FINANCIALLY PEDESTRIAN SELF-SUFFICIENT. CIRCULATION.

15

THE VISION

OUR VISION IS TO CREATE A SPACE FOR RESIDENTS AND PEOPLE FROM OUTSIDE THE COMMUNITY TO USE 365 DAYS OF THE YEAR. THIS WILL BE DONE BY IMPLEMENTING TRAILS, EVENT SPACE, AND MULTIPLE EDUCATION SPACES.

THIS GRAPHIC WAS CREATED USING ADOBE PHOTOSHOP. I TOOK AN EXISTING PHOTO OF THE SITE AND OVERLAPPED IT WITH GRAPHICS FROM ELEMENTS OF OUR SITE PLAN AS WELL AS SOME OF THE PROPOSED IMPROVEMENTS DATA POINTS. 16

9TH STREET STREETSCAPE IMPROVEMENTS CINCINNATI, OHIO

UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI PLANNING DESIGN STUDIO: NEIGHBORHOOD/DISTRICT JUNE 2019

PROPOSED STREETSCAPE DESIGN IMPROVEMENTS

THIS PROJECT WAS DONE IN PLANNING DESIGN STUDIO: NEIGHBORHOOD DISTRICT, DURING THE SUMMER SEMESTER OF MY 2ND YEAR AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI, TAUGHT BY SHILPA MEHTA AND DANILO PALAZZO. IT WAS A PROJECT DONE IN COLLABORATION WITH 3CDC. THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT WAS TO IMPROVE THE EXISTING ELEMENTS OF THE STREETSCAPE OF 9TH STREET BASED OFF CONCERNS 3CDC HAD, AS WELL AS STAKEHOLDERS IN THE CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT OF CINCINNATI.

CURRENT:

TRAFFIC NARROW SIDEWALKS UNPLANTED SOIL

UNATTRACTIVE FRONTAGE AD BOXES FOUR LANES & NO TRAFFIC

LOW TRANSPARENCY TRAFFIC NARROW SIDEWALKS

IMPROVEMENTS CROSS SECTIONS:

SOME OF THE MAIN CONCERNS OF THE CLIENT WERE PEDESTRIAN SAFETY, LIGHTING, AND STORMWATER MANAGEMENT. I CREATED A PLAN THAT WOULD ADDRESS THESE ISSUES SUCH AS ADDING PEDESTRIAN BUMP-OUTS, BIOSWALES, AND TREES. THE OVERALL PLAN WAS CREATED USING GIS AND ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR. THE CROSS SECTIONS WERE CREATED USING ADOBE PHOTOSHOP. 19

FOCUS AREA

CONCEPT RENDER OF STREETSCAPE IMPROVEMENTS:

THE FOCUS AREA I CHOOSE ALONG 9TH STREET IS LOCATED BETWEEN WALNUT STREET AND MAIN STREET. CURRENTLY THERE ARE THREE SURFACE PARKING LOTS, A FEW LARGE OFFICE BUILDINGS, AND A SMALL ABANDONED ONE STORY BUILDING. I WANTED TO CUT BACK SOME OF THE PARKING SPACE ON THOSE LOTS AND CREATE ROOM FOR BIOSWALES. I ALSO ADDED SIDEWALK BUMP-OUTS TO MAKE MORE ROOM FOR PEDESTRIANS.

CONCEPT SKETCH: 9TH STREET, BETWEEN WALNUT ST AND MAIN ST

I WOULD LIKE TO REPURPOSE THAT ABANDONED BUILDING AND CREATE AND INDOOR-OUTDOOR PUBLIC SPACE WITH TABLES AND CHAIRS FOR PEOPLE TO UTILIZE. THERE WILL BE A DECK THAT GOES OVER THE BIOSWALES.

LINCOLN HEIGHTS IS A VILLAGE OUTSIDE CINCINNATI, OHIO WITH A POPULATION OF 3,334 (2017). IT WAS THE FIRST SELFGOVERNING AFRICAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY NORTH OF THE MASON-DIXON LINE. IT WAS A THRIVING SUBURB IN THE 1920’S. THE RESIDENTS HAVE A DEEP PRIDE IN THE COMMUNITY. LINCOLN HEIGHTS CURRENTLY IS ZONED PRIMARY RESIDENTIAL, WHICH LEAVES LITTLE ROOM FOR COMMERCIAL BUSINESSES. THIS HAS CAUSED THE COMMUNITY TO LACK AN ECONOMIC TAX BASE. THIS WAS A GROUP PROJECT DONE IN SITE PLANNING AND DESIGN STUDIO, TAUGHT BY VIKAS MEHTA. OUR VISION IS TO CREATE A TAX BASE, BEGIN JOB TRAINING PROGRAMS, PROMOTE DEVELOPMENT OF BLACK-OWNED BUSINESSES, AND ENHANCE EXISTING FEATURES IN THE VILLAGE TO DRAW PEOPLE FROM OUTSIDE THE VILLAGE.
