Dear Hiring Manager, I am applying for the Winter 2018 internship position for the Friend magazine. After reviewing the internship description requirements, I believe that I have the skills, experience, and desire to succeed and thrive in this position. I will graduate from Brigham Young University with a degree in English as well as a minor in editing in April 2018. I feel that this internship will strengthen my skills in creative writing and editing and align with the career goals I have for my future. I have always enjoyed reading and am particularly interested in young adult fiction. My love for young adult fiction ignited in me a desire to write. I am currently drafting a young adult fantasy novel, as well as editing and refining short stories. Because I want to strengthen my writing skills, I have completed a creative writing class and a children’s literature writing class, where I wrote picture books and short stories for children. Sharing the gospel through literature is important to me, and one way to do that is by providing clean, uplifting literature for people of all ages, which includes children, who learn an incredible amount of information by reading. Helping children learn is something I am passionate about; my major was elementary education for the three years previous to changing my major to English language. I absolutely adored the children I taught during my practicum in a secondgrade classroom. Interacting with those children so closely made it clear to me just how important children’s literature is, and just how much they learn from what they read. By January 2017, I will have completed all of the required courses for the BYU editing minor, so I am confident that I have excellent editing and proofreading skills; those skills have been even further strengthened by my participation in editing for Leading Edge, BYU's science fiction and fantasy magazine. I have provided developmental, substantive, and copy edits for submissions, and I am now a managing editor. In addition to editing for Leading Edge, I accepted a copyediting internship in May 2017 at Cedar Fort Publishing and Media, where I have edited and typeset many novels. I will continue my internship at Cedar Fort through December 2017. My experiences with editing and writing paired with my desire to provide clean, uplifting literature for children make me a good fit for this company. I am detail-oriented, focused, and committed to being a valuable asset to a publication I believe in and can see myself continuing to work with in the future. I look forward to hearing from you and can be reached via email at nicolet@byu.edu or phone at (832) 257-5493. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, Nicole Terry
