RAMMER RESIDENCE Media: Revit, Photoshop Located in the Chicagoland area, the Rammer residence was designed by Jose Pareja, AIA, Principal of JP Architects. Rammer is a single-family, two-story house with a basement. It features 3 bedrooms, a Master bedroom, three and a half bathrooms, office space, and an open floor plan in the ground level. The construction documents were developed in AutoCAD by the design team. My task in the project was to develop 3D floor plans and exterior renderings of the house to be published in the firm’s website and social media platforms. Learn more at JPArchitectsltd.com.

TRANSITUS

INTEGRATED COMMUNITY CENTER

Spring 2016 - ARCH 374 Media: AutoCAD, Revit, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Sketching, Physical Modeling Transitis was designed to be a platform for the community and neighborhoods of Chicago to continue transitioning onto a more united, less violent community. The building is always inviting occupants to interact with each other in different cultural and social levels. In order to achieve this goal as a community, Transitus is a building that provides a platform for commuters to develop, grow, learn, and explore more about their transition together. The word transitus is the Latin word for transition, which encupsulates the need for buildings for the community. The community can always find a space in Transitus to continue transitioning to a better future.

LINUM

LIVING - LEARNING COMMUNITY

Fall 2016 - ARCH 475 Media: AutoCAD, Revit, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Sefaira, Sketching, Physical Modeling Linum is the latin translation of the word “network.” Linum is seeking to improve the university entrepreneurship community and multiply their business network. It will give UIUC community members the opportunity to grow through the use of the living-work spaces, and connect Champaign to the national, and eventually global market by introducing new companies to the local economy. Target Residents must be students or recent graduates from the University of Illinois AND owners of their own company. Entrepreneurship UIUC and the “Live, Work, Succeed” project will cover the first three months of rent of selected residents, as well as the first five months of required membership to utilize the building’s available amenities. Additionally, residents will have access to UIUC spaces for the benefit of their business for five months at a discounted price, including library spaces, conference rooms, and event spaces throughout campus.

Media: AutoCAD, Revit, Photoshop, InDesign, Sketching, Physical Modeling

Motus was designed to be a platform for Honor Students and Faculty members to achieve the UIUC Campus Honors Program’s challenge; a commitment to the intellectual life. The building is always inviting occupants to stay in movement, in order to achieve the challenge as a community. Motus is the Latin word for movement, which allowed the circulation of the design to become interactive and dynamic. Students can always find a space in Motus to continue developing their skills, and ultimately achieve their goals.

PRINCIPIUM Spring 2015 - ARCH 342

BRANDSTON LIGHTING COMPETITION Media: AutoCAD, Revit, Photoshop, Indesign, Sketching

As visitors enter the vestibule of Principium, they will feel welcomed by the presence of a warm glow, similar to how one would feel upon entering a familiar space. Through the building layout the theme of movement, circulation, and connection are emphasized, along with the repetition of DNA-shaped lighting fixtures that illuminate the space. Upon entering the atrium, occupants will notice a helical light sculpture hanging from above. This feature, similar to a DNA strand, allows light to come from different sides and from multiple heights. As they walk into the courtyard, guests will see a continuation of the DNA lights. The interaction between the light sculptures and the plants along the outdoor seating creates a relaxing ambiance within the space. The space thus becomes an area of reflection—the climax of the progression through the building. By having similar light features throughout the building, the spaces are tied together. Although each area creates a different experience as the user proceeds through it, every space uses the east courtyard as the final place of relaxation within the building. Project team: Kaela Kiefer, Vicky Stropus, Saloni Sheth

APERE OIVA

ENHANCING NATURE

Fall 2015 - ARCH 373

Media: AutoCAD, Revit, Photoshop, Indesign, Sketching, Physical Modeling

“Apére Oîva” is a phrase in Guarani, a South American culture that extends from South Brazil, East Bolivian, and Paraguay. This phrase refers to a journey that a person takes to get away from their everyday life, and go into nature, to learn from it, and to come back with different perspectives. This phrase enraptured my design concept and guided me through the process of this project. Located in Kickapoo State Park, the goal of Apére Oîva is to propose structures that serve minimal needs in order to avoid having a great architectural impact, but rather maintain the emphasis in the beauty of the park and the experience offered to visitors. Looking at the overall site plan, Kickapoo has different ponds that are not connected, particularly Long Pond and High Pond. In between them, there is a hill that extends 20 feet high and it is approximately 25-30 feet wide. During my research, I saw the need to provide water access to High Pond from Long Pond by proposing a water lock for small boats, kayak, or canoes. The result then becomes an adventure. Kickapoo visitors can arrive to their cabins by kayaking or canoeing, adding to their journey and experience at the park.

Once at High Pond, visitors have the opportunity to choose from 3 cabin options that vary by size and adventure level. There are two 2-people capacity cabins that are located at the far west side along the pond, and provide the most adventurous paths due to the significant topography level changes and hiking distance from the east side parking lot. The next two are 4-people capacity cabins. The middle cabin also offers a level of adventure that requires visitors to hike up the hill and down to their cabin. The one closest to the parking lot is ADA accessible, allowing visitors in wheelchairs to easily access this cabin. The last cabin can accommodate up to 8 people and it is also ADA accessible. Each cabin has their own dock that has a capacity for up to 4 kayaks or 3 canoes.

The layout of the cabins are straight forward. Each cabin has an outdoor shower, bathroom, minimum furniture, and beds that face the pond. The views from the interior allow visitors to have a 180 degree experience due to the curtain wall that brings light from the North, East, and West façade. Visitors can enjoy sunrises and sunsets from the comfort of their bed.

The design of the Pawson House is a clear representation of John Pawson’s architecture design philosophy. The residence is located in London, and it was finished by the year 1994. The Victorian style façade of the house was preserved, because the house is located in a historical district region with strict building codes that restricted Pawson to make many changes in the exterior envelop of the building. By using the first two levels as public spaces and the third and fourth levels as private spaces, he successfully arranged the spaces so they can be fully utilized by all the family members. The materials that he used are peacefully orchestrated, and they complement each other in texture, color, and shapes. As mentioned in the first quote, “the minimum becomes the maximum”, and that is exactly what John Pawson accomplished in his residence.
