NICOLE HOOI PORTFOLIO 2020

HIJAU BACK IN THE WOODS

Project Year : 2015 Project Location : Royal Belum , Gerik, Perak

The site is a flatground with existing trees and downhill contour.

Project Type : Nature Appreciation Center / Visitor Center Project Description : Royal belum located at gerik, it is one of the oldest rainforests in world. The rainforest is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. Belum is a state park and not an official National Park. The site is an ideal place for nature lovers and researchers to explore. The site is located far away from the well developed Royal Belum resort area over looking the Lake Temenggor, the second largest lake in Peninsular. The site is a flat ground initially an entrace of a existing forest trail located next to a sloppy downhill countour with old trees. Thus, the true nature of the site is not fully accessible due to site current condition. The concept of the design is derived from the formation and topography of existing trees on the site, embrace and respect the existence of them. Suggesting that the building and nature can co-exisit and complement each other in boundless ways.

5

In order to keep the existing trees and break down the scale , the building is pushed back and forth appearing as a series of small interconnected spaces.

Greeneries and water are designed in between spaces to increase the interaction of visitors with the lush greeneries on site, also to make the building disappear into the landscape.Activities are also introduced downhill.

HOUSE OF SPICES

Project Year : 2018 Project Location : Klang, Selangor Project Type : Community Project, Market Project Description : House of Spices located in a food district aims to revive the street and local life of Klang city which is slowly dying due to the rapid urban development that Klang failed to keep up with eventually causing people to turn their backs to the city. However, Klang has in fact so much to offer, it is in need of a sustainable community and lifestyle for generation to come. The spice market aims to be an accessible platform for spice processing process to create a mutual learning and dialogue in the energetic social environement by opening out process as I believe in the ripple effects of sharing knowledge, space and resources. It is not just an ordinary market to buy neccessities but to return to its initial function, a place of exchange of goods, knowledge and conversations between people from different background and culture under the same roof .

02 HOUSE OF SPICES

The target users of this project is primary the Klang community which is families who tend to go out of Klang during the weekends. Secondary target user is vendors and community in food business as the project is a potential to expand to the site around and be a supplier to nearby food stalls. Then followed by students as a learning space as there are a few schools around. Lastly, tourists participate in klang walk. The spice market embraces the food cycle by integrating the process of spice making in the building with a series of inclusive programme from production to distribution to consumption. The variety of activities happening in the building has made it to be an inclusive third place which according to Oldenburg (1999) a third place by its nature is an inclusive place.

03 KINDERDORF

KINDERDORF VILLAGE ABOVE

Project Year : 2019 Project Location : Berlin, Germany Project Type : Kindergarten , Community Project Project Description : Childhood is the most important period of learning in a lifespan. Current literature states that movement is important for the holistic development of children and enhances other aspects of learning, such as cognitive development, spiritual, emotional, sociability and behavior. Body literally is a tool of learning for children. They need to move in order to learn. Therefore, the primary goal of the project is to create an active kindergarten environment for children. Contextually, the site is a newly developed are located between a forest, a lake and an well established neighborhood. It has the potential to act as a center point for people from all social groups and a junction between all surrounded areas of the local community due to its strategic location. 03 KINDERDORF

Design Parameters 1. Community Space The site is located between a forrest, a lake and an established neighbourhood. It has the potential to act as a centerpoint for all people of the community. By combining a kindergarten, a shopping area and a community space, it should attract people from all social-groups and act as a junction between all areas surrounding it. A place where parents meet and stay, elderly come to enjoy nature after grocery shop, cyclists stop by for a coffee and children lay and explore to the fullest. Furthermore the architecture itself allows for fluid movement through and around it.

2. Elevated Kindergarten The kindergarten is elevated above the community center. It is a vital place of the community, since it provides a space for its youngest members, as well as giving a purpose to the building. It will inevitably attract families and parents, which will naturally populate the area. Its elevation gives protection to the children, without completely eparating it from the other community spaces.

3. Roof Village The Kindergarten itself is split into small houses, which consists different facilities of a kindergarten. The scale of the houses is oriented around the children themselves. The atmosphere of a village provides a tight bond between the children and their environment, which they can identify with. The houses and the open spaces between them create natural dynamic of outside and inside play.

03 KINDERDORF

The Kinderdorf Kindergarten believes that children learn and develop a complex set of skills through play. Many forms of play- informal, formal, outside and inside are designed and also integrated with furniture design in Kinderdorf. The design allows the child freedom to explore their environment through their own curiosity. Kinderdorf is surrounded by outdoor green space that allows children to learn with their hole bodies , be inspired and influenced. As a resemblance of a village, Kinderdorf also focuses on common area activities. A large part of Kinderdorf curriculum is designed to be at the common areas to help cultivate a tight bond of children in the kindergarten and encourage them to learn from each ther regardless of age.

06 FLOOR PLAN BATTLE

INCLUSIVE PARLIAMENTWALKTHROUGH (PARK)LIAMENT

Project Year : 2020 Project Organiser : Non-Architecture, Europe Project Type : Competition, Ideas Collaboration : Tsang Hao Ren Project Description : As secured buildings, parliaments have become hardly accessible and tend to physically separate the governmentfrom the people. While this is a safety measure, it also makes us question how isolated the politics wants to be. The brief was to design a floor plan of more inclusive parliament that allows to strengthen democracy, promote integration within society and prevent conflict. The concept of the floor plan is imagining a parliament in a public park where the community hangs out hence bringing the formal spaces closer to the public. In hopes that, this would trigger discourse between the government and public and achieve collective solutions which are able to benefit both parties.
