CHINA

In terms of technology, China has repeatedly been considered a world leader in technology and innovations with electronics and machinery representing their largest export category. Currently, there are no Trade agreements with the US but they are under negotiation for a US-China trade agreement. It does have bilateral investment agreements with over 100 countries and economies. There is no national minimum wage in China but each providence in china delegates their own minimum wage. The lowest minimum wage is 11 yuan which equals $1.61 USD per hour. The highest minimum wage is 18.70 yuan which equals $2.90 USD per hour. Manufacturing in China cost significantly less due to the high saturation of manufactures and huge, highly-skilled labor force.

MAIN SUPPLIER Officially known as the People’s Republic of China, China is the world’s third largest country, after Russia and Canada, dominating the map of eastern Asia. Located in Eastern Asia. Boarding the East China Sea, Korea Bay, the Yellow Sea, and the South China Sea. Bordered by 14 countries: Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Burma, India, Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and Russia. It is the largest textile producing and exporting country in the world. With its rapid growth over the last two decades, the Chinese textile industry has become one of the main pillars of the country’s economy. Although there are many environmental factors that they need to improve, the Chinese government is well aware of their large impact on the environment and are working to better their environmental effects. In January 2003, the Chinese Academy of Sciences initiated a project to save endangered plants, aimed at increasing the plant diversity of its 12 affiliated botanical gardens from 13,000 to 21,000 species within 15 years. These efforts might prove crucial in the nation’s quest to maintain its ecological balance alongside its economic growth. The country has also become the world’s largest manufacturer of wind turbines and solar modules and has overtaken the US in terms of installed renewable energy capacity. The Labor Contract Law of the People’s Republic of China is the primary source of labor law in China and went into effect on January 1, 2008. Its Highlighted requirements include: Labor dispatch agency must have a minimum registered capital of no less than RMB 2,000,000; Operate from a permanent business premise with facilities that are suitable to conduct its business; have internal dispatch rules that are compliant with the relevant laws and administrative regulations; d. Satisfy other conditions as prescribed by laws and administrative regulations; and e. Apply for an administrative license and obtain approval from the relevant labor authorities.

Guatemala is located in Central America and it’s the most populous country. It is a predominantly poor country. The Guatemalan government is defined as democratic and representative. Jimmy Morales was elected as president and chief of state. State institutions face many difficulties which include high levels of political violence, inappropriate campaign finance practices and ineffective electoral regulations. Between 2010 and 2014 internet access in households in the metropolitan urban area in the country increased from 18.3% to 27%. The future of e-commerce is assured in Guatemala because the new generations are more closely related to the Internet. Also, one of the major attractions is that in most cases the prices compared to the local market are lower by between 20% and 30%. Internet could have tremendous impact on the way Guatemalans do business, educate and promote development. Given the large educational and income disparities that pervade Guatemala, only 0.4% of the population accesses the Internet. Environmental issues are critical in Guatemala because of the country’s vast natural resources. Guatemala is one of the most ecologically diverse nations on the planet. Guatemala is one of the most vulnerable countries to the impacts of climate change which disproportionately affect rural indigenous farmers and exacerbate poor land management practices. There is a commission in Guatemala, Garments and Textiles Commission (VESTEX), a cluster in charge of promoting the sector through technical assistance, training information, marketing, exports promotion, and contacts at international and governmental levels. Guatemala boasts 140 garments companies, 41 textiles and yarn plants, and 260 companies for accessories and services. Guatemala also accounts for an important 14% of garments and textiles exports in Central America. The CAFTA-DR is the first free trade agreement between USA and a group of smaller developing economies like Guatemala. It promotes stronger trade and investment ties, prosperity, and stability throughout the region and along the southern border of the US. Guatemala should be taken into consideration since it has high levels of quality of product, it has easy access to raw materials, they have quick delivery times because of geographical positioning, it has low wages starting from US $3.00/hr, they have the CAFTA-DR trade agreement with USA, and they have the VESTEX comission.

GUATEMALA

VIETNAM

Vietnam is located in southeastern Asia, bordering the gulf of Thailand, gulf of Tonkin, and South China sea as well as China, Laos and Cambodia. Vietnam’s government has a strong commitment and determination to the goal of sustainable development. The outstanding achievements result from an aggregate of many factors which include the effective mobilization of every available domestic resource and international assistance. The country has yet to exploit its resources to maximum potential and work remains to be done in achieving further success. At the present stage, sustainable development is faced with many sizable difficulties and challenges of global dimensions: financial and energy crises, food security and climate change as well as subjective challenges to the country. The enactment of a new labor code strengthened the position of workers by incorporating new enforcement mechanisms to comply with fair labor standards. Minimum wage increased by 12.4 percent in January 2016, and in April, the Vietnamese government and trade unions issued a joint statement expressing their commitment to improve industrial relations laws. New strategies aim to increase the impact of science and technology to the economy by 2020. This will increase the value of hi-tech products to around 45% by 2020 with increasing globalization, the development of this area involves international cooperation. Us and Vietnam Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) is the most comprehensive trade agreement Vietnam has signed to this date. Includes trade in goods, protection of intellectual rights, trade in services, investment protection, business facilitation and transparency. It also allows Vietnam’s products to have much lower tariffs, dropping the average 40% to 3% when products enter the United States. The apparel sector of Vietnam has benefited from the country’s membership in World Trade Organization (WTO) Since the country joined in 2007, its apparel exports have increase at an annual rate of 21.7%. It has also helped several garment firms to explore new markets and avail preferences like most forward nation status. On 2016 the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) was signed and is considered to generate a greater share of the global apparel and footwear market. In comparison with other countries in Asia, the cost of living in Vietnam remains relatively low. The average annual income is of $2,200. Labour costs in Vietnam are lower than the rest of Asia. An ideal production base for companies thinking of shifting or diversifying out of China. The average mill operates for 340 days of the year and the typical worker will put in a 48-hour per week and usually works for 287 days a year. Vietnam is a country to look out especially when it comes to comparisons with China. Currently is now the second-largest exporter of textiles and garments to the US after China, and It is a great backup option for Wave because its classification of production is best suited for woven knits, denim and active wear. Vietnam’s broad-based growth, low wages and strong economic outlook make it an attractive solution to rising manufacturing costs elsewhere. The country possesses a dynamic environment reflected in a young population, growing wealth, greater mobility and urbanization.

STRATEGY · CONCLUSION After researching countries and suppliers, we decided to go with China as our main country to source our products. China is recognized as the biggest manufacturer in the world especially in apparel industry. There are several reasons to why China is our first choice. First, China has the biggest textile industry, which is the nature advantage for manufacturing apparel. Second, with a total surface area of 9,596,961 square kilometers, China has large land resources and possesses strategic shares in various mineral resources. Due to its geological preconditions, China has proved reserves of nearly all major minerals containing about 12% of the world’s minerals resources, with only the United States and Russia possessing larger proportions. Third, with its brought experience in the apparel industry China provides its advantage over other countries. China has an abundant experience in exporting, it has become a major overseas investor being recognized as the world’s largest exporter and second-largest importer of goods. Four, Since China introduced the economic reforms in 1978 China’s economy has been one of the world’s fastest-growing. Since the revolution in 1979, the Chinese government started to support international trading and now they have a wide experience in international trading with a strong government support. Finally, China has more than 1500 apparel manufactures and many of them provide P.O services and clear customs for customers, which helps us avoid extra process when bringing our merchandise to the US.

CONCLUSION Our strategy’s overall objective aligns perfectly with our objective of sustaining a competitive advantage in the active wear market. For Wave is important to source from manufacturers that align with our company’s values and that enforce our code of conduct guidelines in their processes. China was our first choice because of its effective skilled labor force, even though its costs are not lowest among the three, they offer an expertise in manufacturing like no other. Also, the infrastructure in our other options is not as advanced as it is in China, and they have established stable export and supply lines. There is almost no risk of manufacturing being delayed due to lack of parts or raw materials. Vietnam and Guatemala are great back up options if something goes wrong with our main supplier. Vietnam labor costs are the lowest among the three countries, but their expertise and training is not as skilled as the one in China, also Vietnam imports most of their raw materials which becomes a risk for the company if something goes wrong. Guatemala’s location is the best out of the three countries and that is why is a perfect backup providing a very efficient lead time, however as Vietnam is doesn’t offer the infrastructure and technological development that China offers. When looking for factories to source from we tried to focus on the ones which part of their area of expertise included active wear and make sure we only work with the ones who share the same values. Our suppliers are our partners and that is how we treat them. We trust in external audits to know the status of each factory. Wave tries to support its partners in implementing necessary changes in order to establish fair working conditions.
