Bayview College identified as best performing secondary school in South West district Bayview College has been recognised as one of the top country Secondary Schools Australia-wide in the annual Weekend Australian “Your School” report.

Bayview College is positioned in the top 50 of all country schools in Australia and identified as the best performing school in the South West district. The ranking is determined by combining 2014 NAPLAN results for Year 7 & 9, VCE data and the Index of Community Socio-Educational Advantage (ICSEA).

This result is a culmination of a challenging curriculum, dedicated teaching staff and students who are encouraged to seek personal excellence.

Bayview College Principal, Dr Michelle Kearney, announced the results are being celebrated by the Bayview College community.

“Due to our excellent student to staff ratio we have raised expectations and in turn this has created our success.” said Dr Kearney.

“The Weekend Australian ‘Your School’ report shows there is a correlation between individual student funding and performance, but our ranking goes against this trend.”

“At Bayview College it is definitely the quality of teaching and learning that is stimulating these results.” said Dr Kearney.

“Our focus on high levels of literacy and numeracy attainment combined with our emphasis of a culture of thinking provides a quality education in our community.”

“We concentrate on growing our students from Year 7, working on the students’ strengths and identifying areas of need.” concluded Dr Kearney.

Student Reports The student reports are written to give a clear picture of your son or daughter's achievements and the progress they have made.

The report has clearly written comments that indicate what they have learnt and may also identify areas in which your son or daughter needs further help or improvement. It also describes what the school will do to support your son or daughter.

Bayview College encourages all parents to be actively involved in their son or daughter's education and we welcome discussion between teachers and parents so that everyone is working together to support their learning.

Student reports were distributed to students on Friday afternoon. Year 10 students who were completing work experience are invited to collect their report between Monday 29 June-Friday 3 July, from 9.00am-3.00pm.

Crime scene peaks students curiosity A grisly crime scene greeted Bayview College students this week when they attended their regular Forensic Science class.

The mock crime scene was created for the students so they could utilise the theory learnt in the classroom into practical experience.

Mr Ian Harris, Science Teacher was thrilled with the student’s investigative work.

“Various laboratory techniques such as blood spatter analysis, blood typing, finger printing, hair and fibre analysis, hand writing analysis and foot printing were used to partially solve the crime.” he said.

Along with chemical and physical forensic techniques the students were required to investigate and question the suspects to look for a motive and confirm alibis.

“The students were very enthusiastic with their questioning.”

“Staff were interviewed, and by using evidence gathered and examined at the crime scene along with the interviews, the students were successful in solving the crime.” Mr Harris concluded.

The Forensic Science elective allows students to discover how science can be used to help solve crimes, and also in relevant careers in Science and Health fields.

Work experience gives students insight to a career This week students from Bayview College embarked on a week of work experience in order to gain an insight into a career pathway of their interest.

Students have selected a range of work places located in the Portland & district area and places further afield such as Hamilton, Warrnambool and Melbourne.

Areas of interest for students seeking work experience have been predominately in the health sector, followed by education, marketing and public relations.

Careers Co-ordinator Marian Haselton said “The Horizon program at Bayview College is assisting the students to plan and prepare for their future, and the work experience program plays an important part.”

“With so many career choices available to young people these days, work experience can be a valuable way to help them make decisions about their futures.” she said.

“We encourage the students to select work places that reflect their interest so they can discover what they want to do as well as learn something about an industry that they are enthusiastic to be part of.”

“Work experience is also a great way for young people to learn about the demands of the work environment and it provides a real opportunity to learn new skills which can be applied in any environment.”

Woolworths Earn & Learn to support poor children in Vietnam This year we will be participating in the Woolworths Earn & Learn program.

Earn & Learn points collected by Bayview College will provide vital resources for orphans, kindergarten and primary school students of Thanh Loc, Vietnam. You can help support disadvantaged children by collecting Woolworths Earn & Learn Points.

From Wednesday 15th July to Tuesday 8th September, we are collecting Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers. You will be given one Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker for every $10 spent (excluding liquor, tobacco and gift cards).

Place the Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker onto a Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker Sheet and when it’s complete, the Sticker Sheet can be dropped into the Collection Box at student services or at your local Woolworths. With Bayview College clearly marked on the sheet.

At the end of the promotion, we will redeem these for awesome educational resources to distribute to the children of Thanh Loc as part of our Schoolies with a Cause (SWAC) program.

Students benefit from holistic approach to well-being Bayview College aims to promote a holistic approach to student wellbeing by nurturing each student’s physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual needs through the annual Year 11 Retreat.

The retreat brings together a diverse range of guest speakers from the local community.

Each year Mr John Mulvey plans activities so the students can get the most out of the day.

“The purpose of the retreat is to address how our Year 11 students look after themselves physically, emotionally, psychologically and spiritually”.

“The activities provide an opportunity for our students to consider their well-being from a holistic perspective as they approach their final stage of school. We hope that it will aid them in supporting each other, their families and our community into the future.”

“The retreat is part of our commitment to having students take personal responsibility as they approach adulthood.” said Mr Mulvey.

The physical well-being aspect of this year’s retreat was conducted by YMCA fitness trainers who spoke to the students about nutrition, exercise and sleep, while giving the students a thorough workout.

Portland local, Neil O’Donnell led a workshop to discuss various aspects of the students’ lives and used this information to help the students to set goals.

Relaxation aspects of the retreat were contemplated during yoga sessions led by experienced teacher Ramon Francis, while spiritual reflections were led by David Hetherington, Bayview Chaplain.

“Positive relationships are important in all of our lives.” said Mr Mulvey. “We were fortunate to have the opportunity to hear from and interact with Lisa Cuda, a psychologist and ex-Olympian from Brophy Family Youth Services Headspace Programme. She used both her professional and sporting experience to discuss stress, as well as address relevant emotional and physiological aspects of VCE for students, their friends and families.”

The annual retreat forms part of the Bayview College Faith & Values programme.

Bayview Subject and Pathways Planning Expo Wednesday 5 August Now is the time to start planning for 2016. Students currently in Years 8, 9 and 10 in the Portland & Heywood district, and their parents are invited to attend the Subject and Pathways Planning Expo on Wednesday 5 August to learn about the broad range of courses that are offered at Bayview in the electives program at Years 9 & 10 and in the Senior Years of VCE and VCAL. This is an exciting and critically important stage of every student’s education.

The Expo is designed to inform students and their parents about the educational pathways and opportunities available at Bayview.

Throughout the evening Bayview staff will be available to provide information about particular subjects, the content and assessment requirements, and relevance to future career aspirations.
