Lao Tzu Welcome back to Semester 2 and an exciting term ahead.

This semester we will be publishing the Newsletter fortnightly rather than weekly and as well as receiving an email copy parents can access the current and past Newsletters on our website. The website will also have up-to-date calendar information for families to access. We will continue to use Facebook to share information and celebrate student and staff achievements. We are also exploring the use of other technologies to share information with families and will keep you informed of these changes as and when they occur.

IN OTHER NEWS This week’s header photo Year 11 student, Matt Roberts met his mentor David Shennan from the Port of Portland at the launch of the Future Leaders of Industry Program. For more information on this program and the names of students participating in the program see article on page 5.

We have a proud history of cultural co-operation with our sister schools in Japan and the excellent teaching of LOTE at Bayview. Our 2014 Japanese exchange program is in full swing with the arrival of our friends from Matsudo High School this week, and our students making final preparations for their trip to Japan in the September school holiday. This program enriches our school community and is only possible because of the generous families who open up their homes to welcome and care for our visitors during their stay and who host our students on their return Japan trip.

We are also hosting exchange students this semester.

Francesca from Italy has arrived, Isabella from Brazil will join us soon. The social diversity that this adds to our classes, extends and deepens our students’ knowledge and understanding of the richness of the world’s cultures.

These students are undertaking a physical journey that exposes them to new and exciting experiences. However, we are all on a journey, each and every day, a journey of discovery and enlightenment. Each time we meet someone new, learn something new, attempt something different, we are continuing our journey through life.

As the students journey through Semester 2 they are encouraged to set goals for themselves that are based on the careful reflection on last semesters successes and challenges, their aspirations and ambitions, and a deepening understanding of their skills and attributes.

Year 10 Work Experience Last term our Year 10 students were in the "Work force" completing work experience.

Work Experience prepares students for post school options and choices. It is designed to: 1. develop in students the attitudes and skills to participate in both paid and unpaid work; 2. increase students' understanding of the current and future labour market; and 3. Increase students' understanding of the dynamic nature of work.

Mercedes awarded Trinity Scholarship

Year 11 student, Mercedes Schwedes spent the first week of Term 2 holidays at Melbourne University experiencing University life.

Mercedes received a full scholarship to attend the Trinity Leadership Week, which is limited to 120 students. The program draws students from all around the world.

The action-packed program gave students like Mercedes a fun and life-changing residential experience, while enjoying academic and personal development opportunities.

Led by mentors and inspired by leading academics, students built lasting friendships with other young leaders from around the world.

“I’m really excited to receive the scholarship” said Mercedes.

“I would like to pursue a career in Psychology and study at Melbourne University, so this program gave me a stronger transition experience”, she said.

Mercedes participates in the Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program, an academic enrichment program designed to support high-achieving Victorians at University of Melbourne.

Students support AFL Junior Football Clinic

Year 10 students lent their skills and support, assisting in the co-ordination of the AFL Junior Football Clinic last week.

Bayview students led a range of activities aimed at building and improving the confidence of primary school children.

The students worked directly with a small team of players from the Essendon Football Club.

The clinic provided an opportunity for keen football handball drill supporters to ask questions of the players about their football careers. The students involved were Tayla Falconer, Laura Kelly, Liam Nelson, Bailey Roberts, Callum Schultz, James Chapple, Leighton Marshall, Lachlan Murrell, Ebony Ball, Jayme Cowan, Sheridan Herbertson and Ella Punton.

Students “learning by doing” in Geography and Science At Bayview we are lucky to have a fantastic range of natural environments at our doorstep.

This has enabled the Geography and Science students to take advantage of our amazing location to “learn by doing”.

This year has seen the introduction of the new Australian Curriculum for Geography.

As a part of the new course, Year 8 and 9 have taken part in fieldwork.

Year 9’s assessed the Walk-ability of the route from Bayview to Nuns beach acting in the roles of a blind person, person in a wheel chair, elderly, young family and mother with pram.

They assessed the route in 5 sections and found the section from the Angling Club to Nuns beach extremely difficult for anyone with a disability or young children.

Sophie Hadden & Jessie Keegan used a pram to determine the accessibility of walking tracks around the Portland Community.

To express their concerns they wrote mock letters to the Glenelg Shire Council outlining their findings and suggesting improvements.

Year 8 students spent time on Nuns Beach studying the coast and how Portlanders use the beach. They prepared a survey and gathered data from Bayview students at different year levels to see how they use the beach as well.

Coastal fieldwork is a major part of Unit 1 VCE Geography in Year 11. The coastal landforms, processes and human activities at Yellow Rock and Narrawong were compared through field visits.

This was the second year of the “Science in the Outdoors” elective.

Students from Year 9 and 10 conducted water sampling at Fawthrop Lagoon, soil testing on a farm at Mt Richmond and vegetation monitoring near Lions Fauna Park.

They visited the Colliver’s farm to learn about erosion and habitat restoration and spent time at the beach studying the inputs, outputs and processes of a natural system.

Students photographed and identified many different plants and animals during a walk around Fawthrop Lagoon and constructed a The Collivers kindly provide food web of the Lagoon environment on returning to class. the Bayview students an opportunity to visit their farm.

All these activities engage students in many ways. They learn organisation and to work in teams; they learn respect for the environment and the community members they may meet during their time out in the community. Most of all they are a really fun way to learn about the environment and the way people interact with nature.

Parents & Friends Meeting Parents and friends of Bayview are invited to a meeting on Tuesday 29 July 2014, 7.00pm in the Board Room to discuss coming events; Cabaret and Brides by the Bay. This is a great opportunity to be part of the school community.

Capsules reveal young students ambitions!

Bayview College Year 12 students had the chance to reflect on their past aspirations and compare them to their current ones as they unearthed their time capsules, which have been stashed away since 2009.

Items that were discovered included who their friends were, what they hoped their career pathways would be, newspaper articles that featured them, letters from parents, letters to themselves or from friends, photos and even cricket batting averages!

For Ben Cottier, 18, a copy of the Portland Observer he placed in his time capsule from September 4 2009 revealed a promising headline “Bid to cash in on cruise ships” that has now come to realisation.

Every year, students in Year 7 are encouraged to place items of personal value into a time capsule knowing they will be revealed 6 years later, when they reach Year 12.

“It was nice to know that the friends I made in Year 7 have endured throughout the last 6 years at Bayview”, said Ella Eade, 17.

“I’m also more aware of my surroundings and the people who support me” she said.

Year 7 students watched on as the eager Year 12 students opened their time capsules, knowing they too must complete their own in the coming weeks. Already the younger students are discussing what might make their time capsule more unique.

Students embark on a day of local discovery Year 8 Bayview students have learnt more about their local indigenous culture through a new partnership with the Budj Bim rangers and Winda-Mara Aboriginal Corporation.

Students spent a day discovering and exploring some of the local natural and man-made wonders of the district.

The discovery commenced at Tyrendarra, where students looked at the rehabilitated areas, explored part of the land corridor system and discovered how the area was used for aquaculture. Budj Bim rangers explained how the land was used sustainably for generations through the use of fish traps, moveable communities and resource management.

The tour then progressed to Mount Eccles, giving students an opportunity to learn more about land formations and the unique volcanic area. There was a particular focus on how the land was formed by lava flow. Budj Bim is the Gunditjmara name for the extinct volcano, Mount Eccles, in South Western Victoria. The name means High Head.

Understanding the ecology of the area also formed part of the discussion, with the Budj Bim rangers alerting the students to koala problems, rare species habitat rehabilitation and tree corridor creation for maintaining diversity.

The final destination of the tour was Condah Lake and the Condah Mission. It was here that the students gained a better understanding of aboriginal mission life and past policies Rose McHugh, Kira Dark, Debbie Chambers, Meg Schultz, regarding indigenous movement and the continuous land Nathalia Crowe & Marli Malone enjoy the day relationships leading to native title.

“The excursion covered a range of subjects incorporating English, Geography, History and Science” said Debra Crespan, Head of Language and Literacy at Bayview, who co-ordinated the tour. “We wanted to cover the National Curriculum obligations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures and Sustainability, in a unique and authentic way”.

“It was my desire to create educational experiences that move beyond the classroom, into our local environment, and which are facilitated by local experts.

“At Bayview we are in the process of establishing educational partnerships with organisations of specific expertise with the plan to utilise their knowledge, facilities and experience to broaden the educational opportunities for our students”.

Building “Future Leaders”

Finding attractive career options in Portland can be challenging for our young people, however an initiative called Future Leaders of Industry (FLOI) is providing just that!

Portland’s FLOI Scholarship program is designed to provide opportunities to assist and encourage Portland and Heywood students to consider the many and varied career opportunities available in local business, industry and government/community organisations.

Students are selected to participate in the program through a vigorous application and interview process. They will learn many new skills while being supported by Industry mentors. Included is a $500 scholarship used to assist with education needs; purchasing study aides, text books, computers, tuition fees or anything that the school and the students feel will be of benefit to them in their studies.

The FLOI program, funded by Portland Aluminium and co-ordinated by Glenelg Southern Grampians Local Learning Employment Network, was introduced to Portland in 2005. In 2014 eighteen organisation and business partners are able to offer approximately 15 scholarships to local young people.

The Future Leaders of Industry Scholarship program provides great opportunities for local young people. The benefits include real life experiences, personal development, leadership experiences and a scholarship.

Late last term our Year 9 students went to Melbourne to experience a range of activities. This enabled the students to better understand the cultural and infrastructure differences between country and city life.

Defying the Drift Program Rotary District 9780 and your local Rotary clubs invite you to consider the benefits of the Defying the Drift program, and encourage students to participate.

Stage 1—APPLICATIONS CLOSE ON 31st AUG 2014 Defying the Drift – Build a Great Future Defying the drift is a program for secondary students considering a career in agriculture and related industries.

This exciting program is run in partnership with Marcus Oldham College at Waurn Ponds near Geelong.

Stage 2—Presentation October to November 2014 When participants bring it all together and make a presentation to their local Rotary club. Presentations are expected to cover what participants have learned through the Defying The Drift program, and their personal reflections on possible rural futures.

Who’s it for?

Year 9 & 10 students (approx. 15 -16 yrs) interested in rural career options.

How much?

A nominal fee of $100 per participant is payable and local Rotary Clubs are encouraged to assist by contributing part of the fee.
