Lord, have mercy on those who lost their lives through warfare or violence. From the Principal– Dr Michelle Kearney Bayview has been immersed in culture over the past few weeks. There have been many events and experiences which can be looked upon through a ‘cultural lens’ which have expanded the horizons of the school community. The Matsudo Exchange program has come to an end. Over the three weeks of their stay our Japanese students and their Host families have developed a deeper, richer understanding of each other’s cultures. The Matsudo students’ experienced the riches of rural Australia. They have had close encounters with our unique wildlife, enjoyed the delicious tastes of Australian food, including the iconic Vegemite, surfed at Cape Bridgewater, and experienced South West’s wonderful winter weather. Both Bayview and Matsudo students have mastered the universal language of gesture to communicate when words failed them, and both have increased their knowledge and skill in the other’s native language. We also welcomed part of the Chinese delegation from Zhangjiagang province on Friday last week. The students made Anzac biscuits with our VCAL class, participated in an Amazing race and experienced the Australian classroom. After school we hosted a fun Soccer tournament. We have bathed in the glow of the fabulous performances of Wizard of Oz. At each of the five performances the culture of team work was evident and the collaboration of creative minds produced a colourful and slick production. It was wonderful to see so many members of the wider community attend the performances and this demonstrates that Portland is a community that supports its schools and young people. The Parents and Friends Association are busily preparing some wonderful events that will not only be enjoyable but are aimed to continue to foster and value a culture of supportive and engaged parents and carers; excited and hungry students. Culture is the widening of the mind and of the spirit Jawaharial Nehru
