From the Principal– Dr Michelle Kearney Across the country we are coming to finals season; Football, Netball, Soccer at local state and national levels. The fans are either excited at the prospect of their teams glorious in victory, or desolate in what seems like another missed opportunity. Regardless whether the team makes the final series or not, every member of the team is a champion in their own right.

Champions are born through persistence, determination and self-belief. Champions enjoy the contest, more than the victory; they don't like losing but realise losing is a necessary part of the journey towards victory; they compete with purpose and passion; they focus on the present moment and work on continuous daily improvement.

Champions develop the habits of success!

The same personal attributes are required to be successful learners. A champion learner recognises that not all learning comes easy, at times concepts and tasks will be difficult, and persistence is required for mastery.

A champion learner has experienced failure, and through this has developed a deeper understanding of how they learn and apply these learning skills on a daily basis. A champion learner is focused and believes in their own ability.

And just like the champion sportsmen and woman who don't get to hold the Premiership Cup at the end of a grueling season, a champion learner is measured by how far they have traveled on their personal learning journey.

At Bayview our students are learning to develop the attributes of a champion. Over the coming weeks you will hear more about the reframing of our academic and wellbeing programs so that we can more effectively assist our young people to develop the personal qualities of a champion.

Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. we do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do.

Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.

Bayview hosts school music festival The School communities were treated to two big evenings of music and performances at the Portland & District Schools Performing Arts Festival.

An annual event, the Festival started over 30 years ago to provide an avenue for students to perform in the community.

The Portland Civic Hall was filled with hundreds of students and parents all entertained by an eclectic mix of song and dance as Primary and Secondary Schools perform 2 or 3 songs each.

CALENDAR DATES

Bayview Year 12 student leaders were MC for both nights. The entertainment was provided by each of the Primary Schools, Bayview College and PSC.

Portland, Bundarra, St Johns, Heywood and Bolwarra Primary Schools performed on Tuesday 20 August and Dartmoor, All Saints, Narrawong, South and North Primary Schools performing on Wednesday, the final night.

Dr Michelle Kearney, Principal Bayview College said “It was a joy to hear and see the students perform during the festival. A lot of work goes on behind the scenes to get each school “performance ready”.

Students inspired by the diary of Anne Frank Madeline Englezos and Campbell Reefman were invited to participate in the Exhibition launch of “Anne Frank: A History for Today”. Maddie, along with 2 students from other schools read a number of extracts from Anne Frank’s diary as part of the launch. Campbell was asked to speak about his grandfather’s time in Holland during World War 2. Below is a small excerpt from his speech.

“My name is Campbell Reefman and I am 13 Years old, the same age as Anne Frank was when she courageously wrote about her thoughts and feelings in a red and green checked diary while being concealed from the Nazi’s.

My grandfather, Noel Angelino and his family lived in Ochten, less than 100 km from the German Border.

When the Nazi’s came to Holland Noel was 7 years old. Noel can recall during bombing raids the entire family were evacuated to coal ships, which were docked along the canals. The family lived for short periods of time on these coal ships, often going home covered from head to toe in coal when it was safe to do so.

A good number of the residents living in Ochten were sympathetic to the L-R Maddie Englezos and Campbell Reefman at the Exhibition Opening plight of their Jewish neighbours and wanted to help them. As the towns people were unsure of whom they could trust, many Dutch families kept secret how they were concealing individuals and families in their own homes.

Hansge Plak, was a young Jewish boy who often played with the younger Angelino boys. Dutch families living in the same street took turns looking after Hansge. It was not known what happened to his family but it was hoped that he would have a better chance of survival if he lived with a large family and not easily identified as Jewish.

When the Angelino family would hear from a local Dutch Policeman that the Germans were coming to inspect homes, looking for Jewish people, Hansge was taken to the attic of the Angelino home where they were able to close off a small bedroom with a book case.

Hansge was looked after by many Dutch families in this way and for a period of time he was kept safe. Eventually Hansge went missing and it was assumed by the Angelino family he had been found and taken to a concentration camp.

The exhibition is located at the Portland Arts Centre, Glenelg Street Portland and closes on 13 September.

I am passionate about assisting students to develop their full potential Background information about you? Married with 3 boys and a girl. Studying Education at La Trobe University. Born in Swan Hill but grew up in Melbourne.

My parents are both teachers and I am enjoying developing my skills as an Mr Eastman sitting in on Mr Fosters Math educator. We sail at St Kilda and ride our bikes along the Yarra but love to class get away to Portland.

Easter is always relaxed and peaceful in Melbourne with no traffic What is the best piece of news you’ve heard lately? Richmond will play finals

TAFE Certificate IV Optical Dispensing Optical dispensers have a detailed understanding of spectacle frames and lenses, including their performance characteristics and effects on vision. They are also trained to perform spectacle repairs and fitting of lenses into frames as part of a unique fashion, health and technology based industry.

This qualification is designed for full-time students and will provide you will the skills and knowledge to begin your career as an optical dispenser.

Optical dispensers work closely with optometrists, ophthalmologists and other healthcare professionals to provide optimum solutions for eye care and eyewear needs. They interpret ophthalmic prescriptions to provide patients with advice on spectacle frames, lens selection, contact lenses, sunglasses and safety eyewear.

Duration 1 year full-time Entry requirements Prerequisites: None. However, Units 1 and 2 Mathematics (any) and English are preferred.

Professional Recognition The Certificate IV in Optical Dispensing is recognised throughout Australia and globally.
