From the Principal– Dr Michelle Kearney In the words of Cesar Chavez, “Once social change begins, it cannot be reversed. You cannot uneducate the person who has learned to read. You cannot humiliate the person who feels pride. You cannot oppress the people who are not afraid anymore. We have seen the future, and the future is ours.” At this stage of the year many of us are focused on the future; end of year holidays, the 2014 school year, a new job, tertiary study or just something different. Our future is what we choose to make it and it starts with hopes and dreams. This week we have had the privilege and honour to hear of the hopes and dreams of the candidates for School Leader in 2014. This amazing group of young people have impressed staff and students by their vision, their humility, their courage, their reflectiveness, their sense of humour, and their dedication to the community that is such an important part of their lives.

“I hope to bring many news ideas and an open mind.” “…provides me with an opportunity to repay the school for nurturing guidance I have received.” “I take pride in the Christian Values which the school upholds” “I have come to love the school and am very passionate about supporting it” “I would hope to ensure that everyone feels cared for and appreciated.” “I will dedicate myself to making a positive impact on the community that has done so much in shaping the person that I am today.” “I want the best for my community, my school.” “The privilege of being a leader of our school, will also allow me to be able to give back to not only the school, but the entire community.” “…the chance for providing the school opportunities to become an even closer knit community” “I am keen to work with my fellow school leaders in order to provide the best experience for all Bayview Students.” ”I want to make the most of my final year and encourage other students as much as possible.”

These outstanding young people have embraced the idea of Servant Leadership, which is so important in Christianity. The servant-leader is servant first and it begins with the natural feeling that you want to serve. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. The leader who wants to give back is sharply different from one who is looking to derive personal gain from the opportunity. We wish all candidates well and regardless of the final decision, each of them has proven their leadership qualities in how they have conducted themselves to date. We are also about to hear from the aspirants for Year 9 Leadership and we look forward to learning more about how they see the future.
